Hot Process Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) Shampoo Soap Bar

  • Welcome to my ACV Shampoo Soap video! This video demonstrates my take on Liz Ardlady’s famous ACV shampoo bar recipe posted on her Soapy Stuff blog back in 2014. Somehow Liz stumbled on the idea of using vinegar instead of water for the lye solution in her hair washing soap - and it works!
    Liz’s original recipe and post can be found here: lizardladysoapi...
    Here are the ingredients I used for this soap:
    Lye solution:
    120g apple cider vinegar (I used homemade apple vinegar)
    70g sodium hydroxide (3% superfat calculated into the recipe)
    Oils:
    200g canola oil
    100g coconut oil
    100g olive oil
    50g castor oil
    25g cocoa butter
    25g sunflower oil
    Extras:
    62g additional ACV to add at the end of the cook
    30g essential oil. I used 20g rosemary and 10g tea tree.
    This soap can also be made using the cold process soap making method. I just chose to make this one as a hot processed soap.
    New to soap making? This is important!
    Sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide (lyes) used in soap making, in granular or flake form or in solution with water/other liquids, as well as raw soap batter, are highly corrosive and require careful and attentive handling and the proper use of personal protective equipment. Made your coconut/rice bran oil laundry bars yesterday - a double batch. It came out so nice. Cooked it in a cast iron enamel pot. I too got a great big overflow on medium low stove top (now I know). Finished it in same pot, lidded in a 170' f oven for 2 hrs. Got 8 BIG cubes which I will try out as dish soap too. Tried my 1st liquid soap which has a phenomenal lather & scent but a little cloudy. Definitely will try this bar shampoo recipe as Im finding I like cp process as its so much more straight fwd. Hi Diane, thanks for your comment. I didn't feel like talking for this one, so I tried something different! Thanks for your feedback though, I'm sure there will be more of my voice in future videos ;)
      I don't have a recipe for hair conditioner just yet, but I'm starting to do a lot more research in that area. There is so much to learn! In the mean time I will keep going with the shampoo soap and vinegar rinse, my hair seems to like it.
      To answer your question re. the oils, there is no more oil in this recipe than in any other soap recipe, and it is calculated to have just the right amount of excess oil (3% superfat) to leave a tiny bit of oil on the hair without it being greasy. I find that my hair feels good and is shiny with this soap, but if you have really oily hair you might need a lower superfat or a different combination of oils. This is why the recipe is made with a small oil batch (500g - my usual recipes are 1kg or larger). I hope that helps! :)

    @argentvixen Před 4 lety +6

    I would be really curious to know if this ends up with a different PH to other soaps. Have you ever tested one of these batches of shampoo soap? Have you used regular soap on your hair before? Is there a noticeable difference to when you use the ACV soap? Also, can you use a lye calculator as normal for making an ACV recipe or it is a different conversion. I am curious because I would think that the ACV would neutralize the lye somewhat making it necessary to use more to be sure that the oils were sufficiently soponified.

    • @EllysEverydaySoapMaking
      @EllysEverydaySoapMaking  Před 4 lety +5

      Such a good question. No, the ACV barely makes any difference. The pH of this soap is exactly the same as any other handmade CP or HP soap! The texture and feel is slightly different, but the ACV is not a strong enough acid to have any really significant effect. Just a fun experiment really :)

    Great explanation ! I have a few questions 1) Is there any difference in quality of HP Soap and CP soap ? (As HP soap is forced for a quicker saponification where CP soap takes it longer ) Do they give equal benefits for our skin ?
    2) Can we make 100% olive oil HP soap?
    3) what would be the curing period for 100 % Olive oil HP soap ?

    • @EllysEverydaySoapMaking
      @EllysEverydaySoapMaking  Před 3 lety +2

      Thanks Dr! The main differences are cosmetic, HP soaps have that rustic look, and obviously saponify faster. Yes, 100% olive oil soap is beautiful made with HP. I always cure my HP soaps for about 4 weeks, however it depends on the water amount used in the recipe.

      This ACV is the same strength as any regular vinegar, but in this amount it is not strong enough to neutralise the lye. Vinegar is far less acidic than sodium hydroxide is caustic, so it cannot be used to fully neutralise lye.

    However it does make a very nice bar of soap so I'm giving it a go CP just for a comparison.

I always end up with very light sent that fades completely away after few weeks of curing and I would prefer not to use the fragrance oils (I ordered one anyway just to try and see the difference but haven't tried it yet). I'm wondering how your EOs would get scorched with a CP recipe? Are you using hot ingredients? I think if you're having trouble with them lasting in CP then HP won't be any better. What EO's are you using? Some are notorious for not lasting very well in soap. Also if you buy your EO's online from a bulk supplier you'll find it much more affordable.

    So ACV is an acid. Lye is a base. Adding acid to a base effectively cancels out each other. So basically, you just get a soap that is highly superfatted since the ACV neutralized some of the lye. Am I wrong?

    • @EllysEverydaySoapMaking
      @EllysEverydaySoapMaking  Před 4 lety

      Yes, I'm sorry to say that you are. I've answered this many times already, but basically the acid is not strong enough to affect the lye. Lye is extremely caustic, ACV is only mildly acidic in comparison. It doesn't even get close to neutralising the lye.

    So acetic acid(vinegar) and NaOH cause a neutralization reaction creating sodium acetate. (I have no idea if that's good or bad for hair) but this leaves less NaOH available, so this soap has a higher superfat content than normal, which may be why it feels gentle on hair.
    I am curious though, how it would work if the NaOH was disolved in water, and the vinegar was all added at the end. Ie less superfat, more vinegar, no sodium acetate.

      I'm not 100% percent sure on the chemistry of this soap, but I have tested the pH of it many times and it always comes out about 8-9 pH, which is exactly the same pH of soap made without the vinegar. Vinegar is very mildly acidic compared to the strength of alkalinity of sodium hydroxide, so I don't think it's enough to really impact on the NaOH available.

    - Is canola oil is a must, or can I substitute it with more olive and/or sunflower oil? Do I need to make any adjustments to lye/water in this case?
    Thanks again for sharing your knowlede 🙏

    Fun demo! I'll have to try this with my home made ACV. I do enjoy a soap based shampoo for clarifying. I must say I've never used my microwave for HP but am going to give this a try! Thanks so much :)Jen

      Thanks Jen! I find the microwave so much easier and faster for HP soap making. Just make sure you have a nice big bowl! :)

    Amazing. Can we make shampoo bars using cold process method too? If yes, kindly make a video on that. Also on conditioning bars too. Plsss

    Wonderful thank you so much for sharing. Why don’t you ever check the temperature of your lye solution and your oils before combining please?
    I thought we had to keep an eye on having them both at around 110degrees F or lower before combining. Within 10 degrees of each other.

      Hi, it depends on your recipe. Most of my soaps are made with olive oil, other soft oils and coconut oil - they can be made at room temperature. It's only if you're using butters, waxes, palm oil etc. that they need to be warmed :)

    I’m confused on the science of this. Vinegar will neutralize the lye (tho it is weak) and turns the lye into salt and water. This essentially super fats your soap and makes for a harder bar from the salt. I’m not opposed to trying, but I would like to know the benefit.

    • @EllysEverydaySoapMaking

      The vinegar is not strong enough to neutralise the lye at all. The soap is the same pH as regular soap made without vinegar. It does change the feel of it though. Hard to explain! The person who came up with this, Liz Ardlady, she knows a lot more about it. Links in the description box for more info :)

    When you make this as a cold processed soap, do you add in the extra ACV at the end, at the beginning with the rest of the ACV or do you leave it out completely?
    Love your videos and I like exploring new ideas through what you do :)

    Thank you for this! I do not have a crock pot and was really wanting to do a shampoo bar. We've been using a diluted (in water) baking soda wash and same kind of vinegar rinse for a few years and have been getting tired of ... well, dumping cold water on our heads! I adapted this a bit a few days ago and am in love with the results, though I overcooked it a bit. Do you think a rebatch to add back some moisture would work to fix the crumbly? I'm thinking about that, or just letting it cure as is so I don't ruin the lovely EO's I added. Thanks again!

      Hi, yes you could rebatch it and add more liquid. Perhaps a touch more EO too!
