Oh my gosh Scotty, what would I have done without you! Having I got Harriet, I knew I needed help, starting with her home and oh my gosh, almost a year and a half and I think how my care for her has changed, increased from a midwest and finding Harriet her forever sister at a rescue, adopt, don't shop, Clementine! I have developed a passion for advocacy for our precious guinea pigs and a love for the guinea pig community. Thank you Scotty for being their from the start and for my continued journey through caring for my guinea pigs.

My first pig lived for 3 years. She saw a vet from birth. She was so loved and spoiled. I sometimes think too spoiled. She lived alone and I regret not taking one of her sisters. We learned a lot with our first pig. Recently we adopted two girls from a shelter.

  • @equestrianrosie
    @equestrianrosie Před 2 měsíci +4

Attempted bonding BEFORE adopting is so important, but it might not always be an option. When we adopted a young "boar" listed online, the shelter didn't even let us see the piggie before signing all the paperwork. That "boar" was a actually a sow and 6 weeks pregnant at that! Needless to say, she could not be bonded with our old boar at home (though one of her 4 babies was once he hit 3 weeks old).

Love, love, love this video. Just think how easy it would be for pet stores to give these condensed care instructions to all new owners, but they don't. I started with one piggie from the pet store(told it was ok to have one female), the fiesta pellets(instead of plain), the biggest cage in the store(still way too small). I was doing everything wrong. I'm glad I found your channel early on. I now have four piggies, and they are the best pets ever! Thanks for all you do, Scotty!

Great guide Scotty 👍👍. My guinea pigs names are Kerry, Kara, Kylie, Kirsty, Heather, Holly, and Penny. Various ages. All named after the dogs I've owned during my 64 years on the planet 😂 No dogs now. Cute little piggies instead. My Dad used to call Guinea Pigs "Winkies". I thought it was a cute name. Thanks for the great video 🐹🐹🐹👍

Great video to Scotty! I'll refer to this as the first video to watch for anyone wanting to get piggies.
My girl's names are Cocoa (3), Ella(2), and Lulu(1). Cocoa sadly developed CBS in the last month. She will be seeing the vet one last time this week to make sure her eye ulcer has cleared, she has a few more symptoms that are affecting her but otherwise, she is a happy little piggy. Ella is becoming quite the potato and Lulu is fluffy like always. 💗😄

I have two boys Mylo and Jasper. Mylo is 9 months and Jasper is 1 year old. Jasper is a small boy, so i am trying to fatten him up 😅.

I appreciate that. It's been my experience that with a proper diet piggies will gain weight without any special care. Of course I recommend daily vitamin C. High quality Timothy Hay based pellets, and unlimited hey. Rolled oats and pea flakes can be given especially to seniors or piggies that are underweight, but in general I would give those in moderation because piggies seem to be able to get very fat on just hay and one bowl of pellets a day. A handful of a variety of veggies per day can increase their gut biome profile. Foraging mix and herbal blends are a great way to make hay more enticing.

@ScottysAnimals Thanks for the advice, Scotty. Jazzy and Mylo are grateful too, that you help educate their piggy slave(owner)😅 I have Jazzy for a month now and have been doing what you recommend in your videos. I could feel his ribcage when I got him and had to handle him extra gently because he was so bony. He has gained 100g and is now 940g, also not bony, but I want him to gain some more if possible. Would definitely try the oats. Does it have to be rolled oats or porridge oats? I am not sure if there is a difference. Do i cook it before i give it to him? If he likes it, can I give it to him as a treat occasionally, or do you recommend it only for piggies that are skinny? The boys love hay with flower/herbal forage. They popcorn and zoom every time i top up their hay, and i wonder how something so simple can make them so happy. Cuties 😍

I cant even go to a pet store anymore. It is just too upsetting and I dont want to support them in any way. All my piggies are reacues from local shelters. I get all my supplies from chewy or the local feed store. I refuse to support pet stores in any way. Thank you for all your advice. Everything I know I learned from you.

I did a lot of research before I got my first pair of piggies… unfortunately from petco… but I had friends that really really helped me including going with me to do health checks and sexing them before I bought them.
The sales person who sold them to me tried telling me we were wrong to use fleece and that their cage they were trying to sell me was totally great for them (it was very very small) also tried to sell me some terrible food pellets… she got so mad when I was told her no I was only using a good pellet and had a double midwest cage. She literally told me that it was clear I had no idea what I was doing 😂 I was shook.

You’re the best guinea pig guru! I don’t know if you want me to name my piggies, I have 16 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫 But can you tell me where do you get your pellets? Do you have somewhere that you buy them in bulk? I don’t have a place near me that I know of. I’m in Memphis, TN.

  • @juliepeters3716

I think things are slowly improving with the pet shops. Our big pet store chain here will not allow you to purchase one guinea pig it must be at least two, so that is good. They do facilitate rehoming also, but unfortunately you cannot get a play date so finding a match is a problem. Apart from the fact that they sell unhealthy treats and small cages their basic care advice is ok. I have two boars, Herbie who is 2 and Gideon who is 1. Both live side by side as Gideon has only been with us 1 week and is still settling in to his new surroundings. I am going to attempt to bond them though.

Scotty as you know I’ve had my girls Virgil Anxiety Wheekers and Nova Estelle Wheekers for a few years now. I was wondering if you had any ideas why my girl Virgil Anxiety Wheekers still won’t let me pet her when she is in their cage and why she still won’t let me pick her up even though I approach her slowly and calmly when I want to pet her or pick her up. I even talk to her with the same voice that I use when I hold and she loves to be held by me. I can be standing up and holding her, and she loves it and I can also be sitting with her on my lap and she loves that too and will usually pancake as flat as she can, turn on her side, or curl up as best as she can and fall asleep as i pet her gently. When I’m holding her and when she is on my lap is really the only time she lets me pet her. My other girl Nova Estelle Wheekers will let me pet her most of the time when she is sitting out in in the open and she will even sometimes let me pet her head and nose when she is in either their Saskia house or under their blue hidey when she is in their cage and she will also let me pick her up. Is their a reason why Virgil is acts differently from Nova? I think i actually spent a little more time with Virgil after I got them, because she was more shy then Nova and also because I noticed Nova kind of being a bit of a jerk towards Virgil. She wasn’t just being a normal dominant female she was being a little bit pushy and jerky towards Virgil and Virgil didn’t really push back she would just nuzzle her or gently nudge her back. Once in a while she might nose punch but it doesn’t seem to effect Nova much.

Hello, Scotty! I live in Germany. After watching your video I'm a bit confused. My vet has never advised me to give my guinea pigs additional vitamin C. She is of the opinion that they would get a sufficient amount from their food. Are the differences really so big that you don't have to give vitamin C in Germany and in America you do? Here is an example of what I feed my animals throughout the day - romaine lettuce, cucumber, peppers, fresh corn leaves, fresh dandelion, celery, apple, chard, baby spinach, carrot, parsley, coriander, dill. They get this in different proportions throughout the day. In summer they also get melon and strawberries as treats. And I buy them at least 5 different types of lettuce. And in summer they get fresh grass every day. I go to pflücken☺️🌱 three times a week. What do you think, should I buy them extra vitamin C? Maybe I've been doing it wrong all these years if I don't feed them extra? Thank you very much in advance for your reply 😉💞🐹🐹🐹🙏! And greetings from Cologne!

Hey guys, my geinei pig just came back from surgery this afternoon (its night when im writing this) from surgery, she had to have her back teeth cut down bc they were overgrown, this limited her eating etc, the vets said she went all well and straight after she was eating her greens, but now as she got home shes not eating much and we are hand feeting her critter care food, she has also dropped in weight a bit, any help?
