3:58 Fun fact, that logo was actually used way back in 2016 for the ratchet and clank movie, sound and all. The only difference was that back then it was called playstation originals, but here they just replaced that part with the playstation studios logo.

That's PlayStation Originals. I think this logo is being used for both games and movies, as we are getting a Uncharted film, which I am hyped about despite the poor acting choices, unlike the Mario and Garfield films that I am not hyped for because Chris Pratt will not replace well known voice actors for these two characters. Imagine him voicing a fat orange cat or a Italian plumber.

Honestly, that "let go of jump button and press it again" is actually how I always activate the flutter move for Yoshi. I never considered just keeping it pressed.
Media Molecule handed over the Littlebigplanet franchise to Sumo Digital back in the LittleBigPlanet 2 days, they took over the servers of LBP2 and made LBP3 and onwards
They aren't taking care of LBP 1 and 2's servers anymore, they shut those down months ago, same with the PS3 version of LittleBigPlanet 3, they shut down the servers for that as well.

Sad to hear you didn't play the other LBP games. I've noticed a bunch of references you should have mentioned. Here's a list of them:
1- The "throw" move was a reference to the Grabinator, from LBP2 onwards. They just attached the Grabinator's main use to Sackboy's base moveset.
2- The Grappling Hook is also a powerup originated from LBP2.
3- The Bounce Pads are very similar to the Bounce Pads also in LBP2. The main difference is that they blend in with the scenario now, not being as visually striking as before.
4- The boomerang's teleport move is very similar to the "Blink Ball" from LBP3.
5- Zom Zom, the shopkeeper, is a returning character from LBP3.
That aside, I definitely hear you on the character designs. In my opinion, LBP designs picked with 2. You just can't compete with Larry DaVinci or Avalon Centrifuge.
But yeah, Vex is a really cool villain. I dare say one of the best villains in the series. He's like a better Newton. Newton for me was just plain annoying. He's only tied with The Puppeteer for me, just because of how terrifying he is.
This deserves a like.
We have ourselves a true Little Big Planet fan here ^ it seems like a love letter to fans as well as a great game in it's own right. Out of curiosity though dude, LBP did have a kart racer on PS3 right? I'm not making that up?
@@Akechi_The_Phantom_Detective Yes, Little Big Planet Karting. It was an alright game, but in my opinion, ModNation Racers: Road Trip for the PSVita did everything that game did, but better. Only reccomend if you're either a big Little Big Planet fan, that needs to consume everything LBP (like myself), or if you value singleplayer (since ModNation Racers has no story mode and is 100% dependant on community support).

This entire time I kept going yup, that’s a littlebigplanet thing, main character being a blank slate while other characters are cluttered in design eyes and all, licensed music, crafted aesthetic, yup its all there

@@inazuma1525 That is extremely unlikely. Something as huge as a create mode (as robust as LBP's, anyway) isn't the kind of thing that's just added later.
This game clearly aims to be a focused, 3D platforming adventure in the vein of Mario and Crash, and not the creative outlet that previous LBP games were.
@@Indomavel2112 forgot about the 3d aspect, well at the very least most of LBP for me was exploring story mode, granted I’ve only played the 3rd game

@@ygobe2 LBP2 is absolutely amazing, easily the game I've spent the most time playing. Those are long gone now, but the memories remain! Masterpiece!
Notes:
-Sackboy’s basic slapping attacks came from PlayStation All Stars.
-Sackboy’s ability to grab, and lift other sackpeople is similar to how he uses the Grabinator powerup in Little Big Planet 2.
-Sackboy also has a spin attack, similar to Crash Bandicoot’s. You use it with a specific set of actions.
I actually wish they kept creative mode and implemented it into this game, just imagine everything that you could make in a 3D version of LBP.
Also it could be making your own platform levels, all of 3D world could be made in the game with it
I love the animation and cutscenes in this game. They’re so expressive! It feels like you’re watching a movie.

LittleBigPlanet always made a surprising amount of use out of licensed music - Atlas by Battles playing in one of the city levels always stuck out to me, and Passion Pit showed up in the credits to LBP2.
It did, but it was never super famous songs. Some of the ones in this game are huge recognizable pop songs.
@marty13612 That’s fair - a lot of the licensed stuff in LBP1 and 2 were on the more experimental end (the aforementioned Battles being a great example)

You had mentioned that LittleBigPlanet doesn’t usually focus on story, but the 2nd & 3rd games have a fairly big focus on story. You should check them out sometime!

When I played littlebigplanet I remember playing this one story level and you get to run around in some kind of hot dog mansion while mr sandman by the chordettes is played. best level in the game.
Funny enough, I have played LBP2 so much and enjoyed it. It’s just the first game I played that has new items and a new story (still haven’t played the first one) and I have played it too much when I was young but it was amazing

This actually seems like a pretty charming game as a big fan of the first two LBP games (though I thought 3 was pretty alright as well) And I thought your video was great as usual,
Just some notes if you're interested:
- Both the grappling hook and the ability to pick up stuff has been core powerups of the series since Little Big Planet 2.
- Sumo Digital also made LBP 3
- Many of the neat features were technically in the series before, but they seem interesting now that they have been reimagined for 3d
I remember playing so much of LBP 1 and 2 when I was younger. Those games were so fun and the community was great. I wish Dreams had caught on like LBP did.

Just wanted to say that LBP2 originally introduced cutscenes and the grappling hook power. You should totally play it. Gigantic step-up from the first and totally the best from the whole series.
They literally designed a level around the beat of David Bowie's "Let's Dance." Instant buy, haha. I am a HUGE Bowie fan.
2 is definitely my favorite. Even the campaign was a huge improvement in terms of creativity

I've been watching you for about a year and a lot of games you have talked about have interested me and I ended up getting because of you (Anoydyne, New Super Lucky's Tale, Yooka Laylee and the Impossible Lair, and now Sackboy). You can really tell that what James values the most in games is creativity/difference. He loves things that are *different* even if they are not perfect, they tried something new and that's what made him enjoy it.

...Mainly because I get an incredible hit of nostalgia from my time playing the Little Big Planet series, therefore making me squeel like a little fan-girl with even the sight of Sackboy...
4:20 it was a PlayStation Studios game mainly due to the IP being fully owned by PlayStation, the game was co-developed by XDEV who are an external support team for Playstation, and it was published by SIE exclusively for PS4 and PS5. PS Studios is a new publishing brand for the company. Unsure if Rise of the Ronin will have that. Several XDEV games did have that like Destruction AllStars, Returnal (prior to Housemarque acquisition), Demon Souls (though this is a remake and Japan Studio instead were involved as a support team for Bluepoint).
Funfact: In 2011, a game called Disney Universe and 2 years later, in 2013, 3D World was released. The gameplay is really similar, so yeah... Nintendo wasn't very original while making 3D World
In 2011 Super Mario 3D land lauched before Disney universe, 3Dworld is basicaly 3D land but with multiplayer and some new things

Great to know that the game is not just good but that it holds up well on the PS4; minor stuttering aside. You pointed out a lot of neat details in this review such as the 'purposely human error artworks' and your ideas (as well as the art shown off) for Sackboy's alternative attack methods at 8:44 were really good.

Seeing Sackboy again really brought out the kid in me, I remember spending every day after school playing LBP 1 and being amazed at user created levels and it truly is a happy memory for me. I played LBP2 of course but the first one while not limited, it wasn't as expansive as LBP2 and the other games so it really forced you to be creative and it had it's own unique charm.
Also, smacking your friend in the face with the frying pan will always be peak gaming.
Licensed music has always been a part of the LBP series tho.

Great and amusing review! I especially dig the little Sackboy animation you crafted around 8:50 - I agree, they could've improvised his attack moves a bit more, but on the whole, I'm really enjoying this super charming and none-too-committal platformer. Simply saving up for new dorky costumes is so much fun too. Also, the actual game isn't hard at all, unless you aim for the top goals and special "cube"" challenges, which are doozies. Oh, and the level design in this game is out of this World, a reason to play it alone (though I'm looking forward to playing it multi-player!)
Truth be told I’m far from the biggest LittleBigPlanet fan but I’ve always loved Sackboy’s character design, being a little guy made from fabric and his little zipper made a character I’ll always remember. He is definitely up there with Nathan Drake and Cole MacGrath as some of the big faces of the PS3 era
Considering sackboy nostalgic makes me feel like a grampa, I never cared for him much and the ps3 generation on console was really lackluster for me.
To think there's some people who grew up with him makes me realize how much time has passed already

In my perspective, I see Vex as society and normal people and the sackpeople as free creative geniuses that are living their own lives.
This game is great; I really liked the characters, especially Vex. He reminds me of Dr. Nefarious (my favorite villain ever)
Nefarious was always a villain that stuck in my head, even if I never got into the Ratchet and Clank series everything from his design to his personality really interested me.

Little Big Planet is such a big part of my childhood and I was hyped seeing him fully jump into 3D. Can’t wait to cop this game when I get the PS5
Some of the mechanics you mentioned were originally introduced in 2 and 3, though it isn't imperative that you play those games unless you'd like to see how those mechanics got started and how they were refined for this game, as well as some of the level design tools introduced in those games that influenced the level design here. (walking up walls, throwing people, etc.)
I'd love to get a PS5 and this game. I miss LBP, and while I know Dreams has functionally taken it's place, I'd like it if a remaster set or some kind of complete edition of 3 that has every (unlicensed) tool/texture/etc. from all the previous games would get released on PS5. The aesthetic of these games are so charming and are a major part of the appeal for me.
Going back to 1 to get footage for this video, it felt so weird seeing how bad that thing looks and runs by todays standards... It'd be nice to see it get a framerate and res bump for sure
@@NitroRad You'd definitely like to check out some of the visual improvements in 2 and 3 then. There are some different fluid and gas effects from 2 and 3 (milkshake, slime, solid things splattering into fluid/dissolving), as well as animated textures and visual effects like TV static and neon edge filters that would look amazing on PS5. :)

Little Big Planet on the PSP is the true first game. It only had a foreground and background while the PS3 had fore, middle, and background. Totaly different levels and everything.

Sumo has worked on a LBP game before with LBP 3. They added an additional three layers to the original three along with three new playable characters! The game was a bit shorter though and didn’t receive as much acclaim.
I would really recommend playing the other two main line games though, as they really highlight the gradual change from the first game’s style to now!
They also had some involvement with LBP Vita
