I first heard this song in 1971 in Grand Junction Colo. by Timberline Rose...a wonderful song..means a lot to me and I really thank you for teaching me how to play it....
I have always loved that song..I'm an old dude that likes to play guitar and I appreciate someone that knows the old school songs..Made my night bro..Thanks
My father-in-law is an old country lead guitarist and after watching it played on a tv special, asked me if I knew how to play this song. I do now thanks to you! I can tighten up the edges and then I'll play it for him and his wife since arthritis prevents him from playing anymore.
Tonedr you do a fantastic job on the song. I was a kid in the mid 70’s. I remember my dad loving this song. Fond memories of father’s love for music. He loved this song. Keep up the good work
Thanks for posting this. I learned this song when it first came out 1974, maybe 75. I was playing it wrong all these years but I have not played it in a long time so my previous folly didn't get in the way of learning it right. I've been watching lots of these tutorials and finding out lots of chords and licks I'd been playing wrong. Next year I will have been playing guitar 50 years. I've been playing Gospel Music with Answered Prayer Gospel Band 14 years now so I don't get to play many of the old great songs like this. Glad some of you younguns are helping out us old soldiers to get it right.
I started playing a year ago love the guitar should have started 40 years ago. Better late then never. Heard this song on the radio the other day had to look it up. Great job. I hope to play it just like you some day. Practice, practice, practice. Thanks again
This is the best tutorial of the song I've ever seen. I'm trying to learn this for about a year and I never really got it right until I stumbled across this video. This is my favorite song of all time. I play it while riding. Thanks for the lesson
Very Good Lesson I play this song now like I own it..owe it all to your lesson ! I believe this song was the 1st #1 in both Country and Contemporary Charts back in the day!
Another great tutorial! What I enjoy about your lessons are the advanced intermediate players such as me pick up on your instructions very easily. The first song you ever taught me was Angry Young Man then Sailing and several others. You make it fun to learn. Thanks Dale!
loved this song for years , had not heard for years , then did and said i have to learn this and by golly you taught it .and very well i mught add. thanks
Absolutely. Me too, and just like that. Many thanks. I knew the chords, but I could never get the intonation right. Now I'm going to drive my wife completely nuts. :D
Hey Dale, I sure hope you get this, on an older post like this. I was in the mood to hear an old song, and I chose this one. Then I saw it was done live on Letterman, even better. Then I saw you did a tutorial on it, which made my day complete. Thanks for always making my days so much better. You truly are an inspiration and, the band always adds to your gift to the world. I'll keep looking for new things you post, alone and with the band. Thank yo my friend, Julio
What a killer Emaj7 modal... 10 years after you recorded this, I'm getting off on it. Great song, was playing it after it came out, relearning old classics in my 60's... loving it and your lesson, many thanks... working on doing the piano lick...
That's a great lesson! Thank you very much for sharing that with us! I just love that song and I've always wondered how it was played correctly and you are obviously playing it correctly.
amazing tutorial! It's so astonishing how well people can play the guitar, such a beautiful instrument and a great song! Hope to play as well you do, some day! im finding learning it is so difficult
Fantastic! Thank you for showing me that. It is a beautiful song and your way sounds just right. As mentioned by others, it is a great sounding guitar.
Thanks Tone, you're doing good work there for blokes like me that don't quite have the ears, you help get us over the line and playing things that make us happy. It's a good thing to do. Good luck mate :)
Hi Dale, Just a quick not to say thanks so much for your time and effort. Such a great song.Wanted to thank you for your tutorial on Paul Carrack's song "How Long". Your 'tutes' have been such a wonderful blessing. Thanks once again and God Bless!
Holy SH**! I was looking for John Mayer's song and ran across your video. OMG the memories came flooding back so fast I wanted to freakin cry. And I'm not a crier by normal standards (I think but then again who knows) Just wanted you to know how much your video means to me and I'm sure to many others. Thank you for the nostalgia. Thank you for taking the time to help others. And man, you play this song beautifully dude!
hello Russell..well this made my day and a sincere thanks for the listen! Music moves me to tears often like nothing else will - one of the many amazing things about it! hope all is good, your friend, dale.
Thanks for such a great breakdown. It sounds fantastic and thanks for putting in the extra effort for some alternative ways to play it. You're videos are all really great. LLB is great! You guys pick some great tunes :D
nicely done. had started learning this with the chords you use in the alternative version you share at the end. I think your first use of chords higher up is easier.
I bought the sheet music to this songs many years ago and it calls for the capo on the 3rd fret. This version is equally as legit and relatively the same degree of difficulty. I appreciate the detailed chord options as well. One of the all-time classic songs IMO.
For anyone who is struggling with the full B major the excellent guitarist in this video demonstrated, another alternative which works quite well is B5. And all this is the exact same grip Tonedr taught for 'tonal' E but at the 2nd fret with the low E (6th string) muted. The advantage with this chord is that it not only sounds better than B7 (and also sticks with the open sound) but you can simply slide it up and into position for the turn-around.
wow - surprised you are still linked up - its been a while! you do a great job. i'm trying to get that strum pattern with the hammer ons - a little tricky!@@tonedr
Thank you for posting this.... I played this song years ago, and I' starting to relearn it..... One thing I have to do with this song is play it in the "C" position.... I love the way the e position sounds, but I don't have the voice for it..............In C you can still pick the necessary parts and it sounds fine.............Thanks again for this video
You have it exactly the way he himself showed me many years ago after a show at the Palms Playhouse in Winters, California. I told him I had seen him play it live in Auburn a few years earlier and I knew the chords, but not the grips that I saw him play. He had pity on me and kindly took the time to grab his guitar after he finished signing CD's. And yes, he used the "jazz Amaj7" with the 6th string 5th fret A note. I told him I would keep it to myself; but since the jig is up and you have it here I don't think he would mind.
HEY PEOPLE! !! I WAS A KID WHEN THAT SONG HIT THE (AM) RAIDIO.,and Man We All LOVED IT.. Its So KCOOL. hearing how much Ya'll. Dig it.. Am Glad that we are not alone. Live long and Rock on MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS..
Thank you for this really nice chord progression (with alternative grips). The Collins sounds great. Is the action on the high frets as good as the lower frets? And do you feel it is worth the considerable expense compared to more modestly priced guitars? Thanks for this and your many lessons and tips on making music.
greatly appreciate you checking this out and thanks for the kind post! The action on this guitar stays very consistent all the way up the neck. I like little to no relief in the neck so it plays really nice all over the fingerboard. i think Collings are among the greatest guitar being built and IMO maybe THE finest. What it's worth comes down to an individual but i have NO regrets and am thankful to be able to play such amazing guitars. All the best with your music, dale.
When you make the change to the Amaj7, that last shape seems to sound the best. Then play the open A shape after the first time? Just an observation. Great song, great video 🎸
Dale- Could you please provide the make and model of your guitar please. What an amazing sounding instrument you have. My current axe of choice is Martin MMV that I picked up for under a grand and it sounds like a 3k dollar instrument. However, and as you probably already know, Martins of this class put off a very hollow and deep booming sound. Which is fine of course in a lot of circumstances but not the instrument that I would personally choose to play this song. I'm searching for a guitar that puts off a little higher and less deep sound such as yours. A tad more twangy and country I guess. The guitar you are playing is the exact instrument I would choose to play this song. If I could make one little recommendation or add a thought (and I have seen dozens of covers and yours is truly the best I heard with all due respect)......Have you tried playing this song using your middle finger to start on the AM shape at the fifth in lieu of the pointer? Two reasons why I do this.....it's a lot easier to go straight to the barr chord and you can tie your pointer finger back up on the fifth string/fifth fret to sound off a little different sounding AM shape starting at the fifth. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think MMM plays it this way or close to it typically. I have also seen him play it the way you demonstrate playing the regular AM shape at the fifth starting with the pointer finger. This is at his concert at the big amphitheater in Denver. I also like playing that AM shape the way you demonstrate/suggest and adding my pinky at 7th fret/fifth string. Oh my goodness, that makes that AM shape sound so jazzy adding the pinky to the 7th fret/fifth string. Just a thought. I think all of us guys that replicate or cover great songs like this play the chords in which we feel most comfortable. That's the beauty of music......we don't always have to play the exact chords to make the song still sound good. I used to play and sing this song to my daughter when she was little to put her to sleep at night. So, this song is VERY significant to me and I can't express enough how wonderful you cover this Dale. Sorry for long winded rant here. I would greatly appreciate the make and model of your axe.
Patrick Kuiper it's a Collings C10 model. Mine has an adi top and mahogany back and sides - it also has their 'deep body' option which makes is a bit deeper than the standard C10. This guitar has a lot of miles on it too which have really caused it to sound pretty fantastic i think. thanks for this post and suggestion - it's a great one! Thanks also for sharing music and friendship - dale.
Hi Dale, Terry Whalin here. Great job on this song. I've been wanting to learn the Three Dog Night version of the lead to Never Been to Spain but there doesn't seem to be any videos to show how to do it right. If anyone can show me how to do it, it would be you. If you would do that I would sure appreciate it. Thanks my friend.
hello Jim...sure appreciate you checking this out! I've never taught strumming patterns as such. I never think in terms of a pattern much when i'm stumming. My best and sincerest advice is to feel the song, lock into the beat or grove of the tune and relax. There will be obvious places in some songs where you want to match the record maybe but for the most part IMO a pattern makes our playing too mechanical and does allow us to learn to feel the song which IMO is a better way to go at it. All the best with your music, dale
hello Patrick...if it were me i'd play it the exact same with capo on 3rd fret - just have to get your visual reference used to the change in frets is all. All the best with your music, dale.
This was a MMM concert in Sellersville PA in Jan '14 that I was able to attend. It was recorded for the On Canvas TV show attached. I thought you would enjoy this. whyy.org/cms/oncanvas/michael-martin-murphey/#sthash.7QPfgMR2
hey Robert...sure appreciate you checking this out! i don't think in terms of patterns with strumming but locking into the time and groove of the song. I know that's not what you ask but it's just how i approach it. keep pickin', dale.
Really wish I could play the guitar or anything musical... never appreciated music until late in life and now that I am paralyzed with a tracheostomy tube... can't even sing anymore!
Oh, by chance are you playing a Collings? My brother and I are dieing to know what you are playing and have bets on it. My brother thinks you are playing a Guild D125. The guitar does not sound like a Guild even though Guild makes a lot of models that look like this. My bet was on a Collings but I'm probably wrong. It just sounds like one and one of the really good country guitarists in Southern WI. where I reside plays a Collings that sounds a lot like your instrument.
+joel berry hey Joel thanks so much for checking this out - i don't really think in terms of strum patterns. Just try to lock into the tempo and try to play what you hear. best, dale
Just wanted to thank you for teaching me that song....

Thanks so much for checking this out..greatly appreciated!
Love the OPEN Amin7..... Your acoustic is very bright. What is it? Very clean playing by the way.
it's a Collings C10 - thanks for checking this out and your post is sincerely appreciated!

dale

Thanks for sharing your time and love of music! I try not to count!
Great guitar. Is it a SantaCruz?
it's a Collings C10 - greatly appreciate you checking this out!
Great lesson and song. Any chance you can share the strumming pattern?
hello Jim...sure appreciate you checking this out!
All the best with your music,
dale
tonedr I guess that’s why they say your left hand is for what you know, your right hand is who you are.
tonedr Thanks for the advice. 👌🏻
COULD YOU SHOW HOW TO PLAY THIS SONG WITH CAPO ON 3RD FRET? THANKS IT'S TOO HIGH FOR MY VOCALS IN ORIGINAL KEY
hello Patrick...if it were me i'd play it the exact same with capo on 3rd fret - just have to get your visual reference used to the change in frets is all. All the best with your music, dale.
THANKS-----LOVE THE VIDEO
This was a MMM concert in Sellersville PA in Jan '14 that I was able to attend. It was recorded for the On Canvas TV show attached. I thought you would enjoy this. whyy.org/cms/oncanvas/michael-martin-murphey/#sthash.7QPfgMR2
thanks for the link! great artist...all the best, dale.
What is the strum pattern?
hey Robert...sure appreciate you checking this out! i don't think in terms of patterns with strumming but locking into the time and groove of the song. I know that's not what you ask but it's just how i approach it. keep pickin', dale.
Hi...do you give lessons???
yes Thanks so much for checking this out..greatly appreciated!
Really wish I could play the guitar or anything musical... never appreciated music until late in life and now that I am paralyzed with a tracheostomy tube... can't even sing anymore!
Thanks so much for checking this out..greatly appreciated!
Patrick Kuiper it is a Collings - C10 model.
What is the strumming pattern ?
+joel berry hey Joel thanks so much for checking this out - i don't really think in terms of strum patterns. Just try to lock into the tempo and try to play what you hear.
best,
dale
