Why Japanese Built Cars are the Best Used Cars to Buy

- Greg Macke - Your Car Angel - shares why Japanese built cars are the best used cars to buy. Toyota and Honda were producing the most reliable cars in the mid 2000's. Build quality was excellent, together with high quality parts and high quality manufacturing. This was is what is considered the golden age of Japanese build quality. Toyota Rav4, Camry, Corolla, Avalon, 4Runner, Tacoma and Land Cruiser were all nearly bullet proof. However not all Japanese cars were great. There were good years and bad years, good engines and bad engines, good transmissions and bad transmissions. However, overall the Japanese were building the most dependable cars that were being built during that era. American and German car manufacturers could not compete with Japan. Also listed is the Halo and Pitchfork List. These were the best and worst used cars. When car buying you should always get the right support.
Automatic thumbs up... My dad was old school American who worked for GM in 70s and 80s and literally said things like "no Japanese car will ever be parked in my driveway". We had many American cars growing up and so many ridiculous problems. Then I purchased my first Japanese car, a Toyota Matrix in 2005 and felt terrible, like betrayal, but I got tired of spending extra money on repairs of American cars. Switching to a Japanese car is the best thing I did for my pocketbook. I have never EVER had a problem with my Toyota, and now I'm on my third one.
My family always had American cars growing up. They would go into the shop for unexpected repairs for the stupidest reasons. We switched to driving Japanese cars and the unexpected repairs stopped almost immediately. My dad summed it up perfectly. He said "When the Honda or the Subaru go into the shop it's because of preventative maintenance or normal wear and tear, but when my Suburban goes into the shop it's because something is broken on it".
Toyota for life. I am a proud Prius owner
Look at the VIN number if it starts with a J it was made in Japan. We have a saying at my shop. “If it starts with a J you’ll be okay.”
First thing I look at when buying one!

Way more better than those goofy American GM plastic crap. Besides the Toyota FJ was discontinued and heck, those things kept their value and sometimes increased in value. GM rust buckets literally lose half of their value the second it comes off the lot.

@@salishaho3194you haven’t a clue, the safest cars on the road are Japanese, Mazda , Toyota and Honda are the best engineered cars in the world and Mazda are the safest according to the European tests. US cars are junk, built down to a price using the cheapest materials they can get away with and especially from this era in the 2000’s they were extremely dangerous with poor suspension and handling the norm. GM were the worst, absolutely dreadful cars that were badly designed and then badly made in plants where speed of production and cheapness of components was all that mattered.
All of my Toyota and Lexus vehicle’s still drive flawlessly like new after over 100k Miles
Same here. I have an old 2 litre Lexus. Small engine. 249 thousand miles and just normal maintenance. Mechanic says it will last another 100 thousand without serious costs
I agree 100%. The Japanese craftsmanship / attention to detail is unlike any other in the world. They truly care about their products and it shows with great cars.
Credit where credit is due. Toyota absolutely did something right.
Amen brother.. gonna get me one. :)
I worked for Chrysler and the people who make those cars don't even like them!
It shows!
As long as they get paid, why really care?
When I was 17 & lived in Southfield Mich. I found out that Chrysler was designing alternators to fail shortly after the warranty had expired ! I also knew I had relatives who had new cars sitting on blocks - broke-down - in their drive ways while they were making payments on them !
I'm not surprised. I drove a Dodge Grand Caravan one time as rental. It was only a couple years old with no more than 30k miles. It ran like a twenty year old vehicle. It was the worst vehicle I've ever driven! I'm so glad that the one I own is a Toyota.
I laugh at the idiots ripping around in their newer chargers, thinking they're the shit....until they break down and realize they're the stupid shit for buying one.

I purchase a 98 Camry 3 years ago 200,000kms.
Since then I’ve changed timing belt, spark plugs, rear suspension. Now the radiator leaks and I top it up with water every time I drive.
After 32 years of being an auto mechanic at 1 Buick and 2 Chevrolet dealerships I bought a new Tacoma. And I love it. I would consider buying another one.
I got out of auto repair because I was fed up with GM, the dealerships and insurance companies always having their hands in my pockets.
Japanese cars are made for cheap ass people like you who don't appreciate the power, beauty and the safety.
@@salishaho3194
GM American cars look the same nowadays. If I wanted beauty, I would buy an LC500. And by the way, Japanese cars are not cheap. They literally kept their value, sometimes even increase in value. American cars, however, lose their value after a few years. Sorry mate, not sure what planet you're from but nothing you said makes an ounce of sense. Lol. Check your facts before you try to reenter the adult chat room.
I own an all original 2000 Lexus GS300 which has 200,XXX miles on it, and it still drives/feels like a new car. It has also aged very well. I'm proud to be the 5th owner of the car. The previous owners obviously took care of the car, and I plan to continue this for as long as I can.

I just bought a 22 Corolla on Tuesday, and was pleasantly surprised to see that it was built in Japan. I read that under 30% of them are imported to the states, so they are rare to find here and plan on keeping it for several years

Greg thank you for what you do! I watch many car related videos from topics like repairs to buying advice. There are several good channels out there. They are made by auto mechanics. They mainly talk about repairs, but they also give good car buying advice. Because you specialize in buying used cars (and they specialize in fixing cars) you give an extra special insight into the car buying process. The way you talk about looking for highway miles vs city miles, panel gaps, and revealing accidents is just brilliant. People like Scotty Kilmer and Chris Fix have millions of followers and they are good, but Greg Macke The Car Angel has an extra special touch for car buyers. You should have more followers. Thanks again, you made a difference.
I agree completely. I owned a motorcycle service shop for 40 yrs & only worked on Japanese - Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki & Yamaha - because they were reliably built. Due to their quality I felt that I would consistently come up with good results when repairing them. I have a 2007 Rav-4 V6 that was built in Japan & at 77 k miles - no issues - I plan on having it for a long time. Also have a Toyota T-100 '96 V6 truck with 139 k miles that was 100 % built in Japan. Was recently told by a mechanic that the T-100 is built like a 'solid truck' - not like a less durable car with a truck bed attached. At a 100 k miles needed to put in a new ignition switch - otherwise it's been trouble free. I get 17 mpg when pulling our RV trailer & it has no problems with going uphill. Enjoyed your video.
Take good care of that V6 RAV4, one day people will realize how special they were.
@@rightlanehog3151 The 1st T-100s , for 4 years, were made in Japan. Toyota was being leaned on by American execs to build big V8 trucks for the US Toyota dealers to sell. Not being experienced with big trucks, they turned to a co in Japan that built commercial vehicles : buses, transport trucks, tractors, ect, who then made a smaller V6 T-100. Built very durable ! After 2 or 3 years they made the larger V6 which I have. When Toyota moved to America to make trucks they made the Tacoma. The T-100 was discontinued. On a vehicles vin #, if it starts with a ' J ' , this says the car or truck was made in Japan.

I've preferred and had Ford, GM, and Chrysler in my life. When gas price shot up (remember the $4~5 a gallon?) I bought a Toyota Yaris, strongly recommended by my then living together girlfriend. It's been more than 10yrs. My Yaris has 245k+ miles on it. Original engine, original transmission, and original clutch! Never ever had a problem. Of course, original starter, original water pump, etc. Also, he is right, the interior holds up very well, and make my passenger surprised how old/many miles this car has.
Your 'car biography' is very similar to mine. If the Detroit 3 had been half as loyal to consumers as we were to them, they would still be called The Big 3. After decades of heartbreak, I split the difference and ended up with a Pontiac Vibe made with Toyota parts. It has been utterly reliable for 14 years. FYI all Yaris models sold here will soon be re-badged Mazdas.

My father's 2001 Lexus LS430 is legendary and still rides on the original air suspension system with no sign of going faulty, not to mention along with all the other complex components in that almost 20 yo car, whereas the air suspension of my 2015 A4, yep I said 2 0 1 5, completely fell apart after only two years of ownership. And you know what, they say even Audi is statistically on the reliable and better built side among other European auto brands. I hope you don't live in a place where rust can ruin the body while the mechanical components are still strong.
There's no arguing the longevity of Toyota / Lexus. Nissan turned to JUNK as of March 1999, with the Renault-Nissan Alliance. Now that the French are calling the shots, their JATCO automatic transmissions (especially their CVTs) are junk, their engines no longer last, their build quality is crap. Honda is still pretty good, except for several of their automatic transmissions that proved to be junk.
Barry I could not agree with you more about this statement of Nissan turning to junk after 1999. Currently I work for a used car store that sells older Nissan's, Toyotas, Honda's etc. Nissan has been the worst brand of cars for me to buy at the auctions, but for some reason people love coming in to buy them even tho I personally think they are junk as well lol.

I agree 100%. I bought a '08 Prius new. It now has 180K. Not a single problem. Always parked on drive way, rain, hails, snow, fog, heat... In all weathers, it fired right up. Engine never died. Only replaced the car battery (not the expensive hybrid battery) once at 120K (yes, only once, no kidding). The car had a front end collision repair paid by Insurance for nearly $10K in 2012 and a few other minor incidents which were not repaired. Still, not even a rattle in the car. All wheels track true on highway, no alignment issue. My brand new BMW broke down at 5K and then again at 10K. It's always garaged but consistently cost thousands to repair annually. My 2017 Mercedes was fine but expensive for normal maintenance. The Prius was the most reliable car I ever bought. My only other car that's comparably reliable was still a Toyota, L100 Land Cruiser, which I bought new in '99. We had a '68 Corvette, which also cost thousands to repair annually. Had a VW, was a nightmare. Had an Old's Cutless, got some issues as it got close to 100K. Was going to buy a Surburban in the late 90's, but the first one (brand new) we were going to test drive out of the the dealer's ENTIRE fleet in the parking lot couldn't even be started. That was the last time we tried any American car, and we have stuck with Toyota since then. European such as BMW, Jaguar, and Italian, in my view, are less reliable than American cars.
Great video!
In 2007 I bought a used 2004 Toyota 4runner SR5 4x4 with 55k miles on it, assembled in Japan. I've had this vehicle for 13 years now and have only had to do basic maintenance on it. The only slightly major repair would be drivers side catalytic converter which was approx. $700. It now has 120k miles on it (very low miles for a 4runner) and runs great! I cant say enough about this truck!
I have a 2000 4runner with almost 300,000 miles. It is bullet proof. I recently bought a BMW Z4. Mid life crisis averted. love the Z4 but if I have to drive from Alabama to Wyoming ...Ill be in the 4runner.
The main reason why Toyotas-in particular are so well made is actually surprising. Toyota doesn't necessarily make cars, they make people. These people are able to make cars very well even if they're using machines to do it.
Quality engineering; quality parts.
I have a white 95' Camry 2.2 L 5FSE 4 cylinder 211,000 miles. Thing runs solid with just little to no issues. I just had it all tuned up recently. Runs smoother than the 2018 Ford Focus I rented the other week.
This is why I’ve always ALWAYS bought used Toyota’s and Lexus! I have so many it’s embarrassing, 1993 Lexus SC400, 2004 Toyota solara coupe, 2005 Toyota Land Cruiser, 2006 Lexus ES330, 2006 Lexus SC430, 2007 Lexus es350, 2008 Lexus LS460!
Grew up in a MOPAR household; got my first Toyota (‘92 Corolla 5-speed wagon) in 2005, after totaling my ‘91 Dodge Spirit on icy roads. 18 years later, and I’ve driven nothing but Japanese cars since - Toyotas & Hondas that made it to 250K+ miles before selling, trouble free.
I live in southern Tunisia which is desert condition high temperature with sandy wind and bad tracks ,only TOYOTA cars last long time without breakdown 😎

Time and time again, your right about lasting quality, coupled with reliablity. The Japanese market raised the bar that made other auto makers step up, or step out! Thank you for you advice and efforts. 👍
Got a 2004 honda civic hatchback... 100k mileage and still runs perfectly.
My Suzuki SX4 is made in Japan. And the VIN starts with a J. It’s been the best sedan I’ve owned. Sad it’s discontinued in USA. But that’s why I got it for $1500 after inspection and registeration.
Hey Greg love your work please put out more videos like these on second hand vehicles find them really useful, kudos to you. Respect from Pakistan
My first new car is a 2014 Scion TC Monogram, MADE IN JAPAN. Almost has 30k miles on it! Obviously no issues mechanically! I enjoy the heated leather seats, panoramic sun roof, and flat bottom steering wheel. It's been lightly modded with a full ARC catback, TRD springs, and TRD cold air.
My only complaint with owner ship is the car is rattle can, no thanks to my mods that further brought out these flaws. My only current complaint is the seats creak and rattle and something in the headliner keeps vibrating. Biggest issue is that the TRD springs make the camber out of spec and cannot be aligned properly without aftermarket camber arms! Dash has cracked on both sides.
MICHAEL GRANT, it’s your mods that cause the rattles IMO
I own a 2015, since new 🇯🇵
I did towers (front&rear) and ecu, that’s it.
Not a clunk, a rattle, or a squeak, nothing. I’ve owned half dozen new vehicles, this one is solid 6spMT
The car sounds like it’s built out of a solid chunk of steel, it weighs 3100lbs lol
@@ScottishScot I have to disagree with you. If you look on the Scion forums, the passenger seat rattle issue is well documented on stock cars. The driver seat creaks with lateral body movement.
I already gutted the interior once and I feel like taking the front seats and headliner out this time. I hear people say the extra bracing helps alleviate squeaks and rattles due to chassis flex. Sucks if I put it back to stock, waste of $1500 in parts and labor sadly. If i remember correctly the stock exhaust wasn't quiet at all.
You hit the nail on the head ! I only like to go with used Toyota products for personal cars. Reliable as heck, little maintenance required.
In my household, we proudly own three Japan built cars: 2007 Toyota Camry, 2015 Lexus ES350 and 2019 Nissan Rogue
My 2003 Lx470 is still humming along with just regular maintenance! 200,800 miles and it rides like butter! Love my Lexus ❤️
Best of the best.
Another great barometer of "is this a reliable vehicle" is to go to sites like Edmunds and read the car reviews submitted for that year, make & model. Put in a 10 year old vehicle (i.e. 2009 Camry) and then filter the reviews to see "most recent". It is there usually to find other peoples' problems they had with that model. Good video with a lot of useful information there is so much for Joe Public Consumer to use to check out a used car, unfortunately on a small fraction of people use those tools that they have at their disposal.
I'm still daily driving (hard) a 1997 Honda Prelude type SH - still running on all factory original parts (except consumables), with no major repairs, and Vtec and torque vectoring still working fine. It's not fast by today's standards, but still peppy and fun in the corners.
What do you think of Honda bolting a turbo to their new engines?
@@rightlanehog3151 My wife has a new DI turbo AWD CVT honda too. It's fine. Good power and mpgs, but probably will require more maintenance in the long run.
@@Phrancis5 Only time will tell.

I have my toyota celica 2001 for 4 years and it still drives smoothly. Never had a problem with it, except for the typical wear n tear like changing the battery and changing the motor mounts. What I love about it is it has roll up windows and its a manual transmission.
@ajrg91 I know I’m late, but I’ve NEVER seen a 2000’s Celica with crank windows. Extremely rare. I’ve seen them in manual, but never with crank windows. Sounds sick!👍
@@Blakecryderman7244 thanks man, I think its a base model as well since its roll up windows. But you can't go wrong with any toyota celica since they are built like tanks similar to Honda civics.
@@ajrg91 oh yeah 100% agree. Beautiful honest simplicity all the way around. I don’t think you realize how rare it is for a 7th gen Celica to have crank windows. Like there’s probably less than 50 of them in the United States in that generation that have crank windows, yes, only FIFETY. And there’s THOUSANDS of 7th gen Celicas left. Holy smokes man. It must be the liftback GT right?

Lol
I owned a 03 Tundra with 220K miles and its still running perfectly. Love Toyotas. Best cars period.
I agree 100%. Unfortunately for the most part they are boring cars. I daily drive a 500 Abarth (just got out of the shop for leaks) and Jeep Wrangler (has had mechanical issues). Will buy a Toyota hybrid soon for high mpg... We like to keep our cars long time! Excellent video.
Unfortunately very few fun cars are reliable with the exception of S2000 and NSX.
The Abarth and Wrangler must be the worst choices for reliability.
@@apt62 yes. I had a 350z and gave me issues.
I own a 2010 Prius that just may well be the best car I've ever driven. You couldn't go wrong with a Prius.
@@apt62 Nissan 370Z, GT-R?, Toyota 86, Honda Civic Type R, Lexus IS 350 F Sport, IS-F, RC F, GS F, LC 500?
I have a 1st Gen Honda CR-V 2000... That vehicle is simply comfortable and amazingly functional and reliable!
Just some required repairs as its previous owner gave it bad life, but now it is getting back to its glory!
Not just reliability, but ability to self-warranty your used car with ease of repairs and availability of cheap parts. Porsches are fairly reliable, but are too expensive to self-warranty.
Excellent job. Thank you.
I have 2004 Corolla 200,000 miles run great and has never stranded me. I had 94 Corrolla went 360,000 miles ran perfect but the body rusted very bad. Change the oil is most important in my book.
I own a 98 Corolla with only 78,000 ks from new. Still looks drives and feels great. still feeling it.
I agree with one exception and that is Nissan!! When Nissan was Datsun their cars rivalled Toyota for quality!! I know, I had a 74 Datsun 1800 (AKA 1800 or Bluebird) used and abused but still an excellent and bulletproof car. Todays Nissan are far from that and are so bad that I wouldn't consider purchasing one! I like Toyota, Mazda, Honda, Subaru, Suzuki and even Mitsubishi but Nissan leaves me cold!! I currently own a 1998 Rav 4WD and a 2006 Mazda Miata and as my name shows I am of German heritage and my choices show that even more!. i.e. I buy by dependability NOT nationality!!

My first car was a 06 highlander. It had 160k miles on it when I got it now it has 250k. It is pretty indestructible. It was rear ended and Toyota has been incredibly helpful in helping me get the parts for an old car
Renault: hmmmmmm, let's buy Nissan
Nissan: *becomes French*
Nissan isn't as good as what it was when it was Japanese owned!
Yep, especially with the recalled CVT transmissions.
still driving our 28yr old toyota prado and mitsubishi pajero and another 24yr old prado. original engines and transmissions. water pumps and alternators never been replaced. pajero's suspension bushes was replaced a year ago. both cars still run great. just a regular oil and belts change.
We have a Lexus IS with well over 100k miles that runs better than our BMW that only has around 80k
Trust me...German cars are junk and overpriced junk.
You must not talk about the cars because you are completely out in this bussines.
You compare your stupid ugly Lexus with BMW?

BMWs are the most unreliable cars on the market. They're so bad that they literally lost almost all their value after a few years. Sorry mate. Not sure what planet you're from but nothing you said makes an ounce of sense. Check your facts before you try to reenter the adult chat room.
My ford has been giving me multiple problems while my bmw been running great. i just spent so much money on the Ford to keep it going. I wanna sell it and get a lexus gx or Lx..am open for a 4runner or highlander as well. Good for bad weather, reliable and holdsvits value. Safety is another thing i like. Some cars are reliable but if you get into a crush you're dead!!
I have a 2011 Honda Accord. Its just about a perfect car.
Just bought a 1996 Toyota Camry with over 161,000 miles yesterday... drives WAY better than all other vehicles in my household
3 Priuses, no complaints.
What do you think of the new Corolla Hybrid.
its 2.0 is the minimum to drive with others on our fast autobahn ! These underpowered Hybrids only crawl behind trucks most times because left line we drive 160-240km/h where Hybrids suck or cant reach. I myself went with a V6Hybrid from Lexus and its 300 combined hp is enough to go left line....it has enough torque to smoke a BMW X5 or Audi shit uphill into the 200km/h limiter. @@rightlanehog3151
We have a 2004 RX330 with 350k miles. Still use it everyday but starting to burn some oil, replaced ac compressor.
2002 Tundra, over 300k miles, replaced radiator.
2000 Land Cruiser 250k miles, rebuilt the motor.
2013 BMW 76k miles, oil leak from valve cover and rear main seal, leaking injectors, replaced water pump, thermostat, alternator, starter, radiator.
Every part of my Audi broke after 4 years. Rear door passenger door doesn't open from inside and windshield wiper motor broke, such simple basic components, that's unacceptable.
Sell it after the warranty ends XD
