May 24, 2023 Grady-Clovis, NM | Tornadic Supercell Close Encounter Chase

- We did not have radar or signal on account of location and signal boosters. The plan was to drive through RFD and clear the path. Thankfully we either narrowly missed it, and or it was a weaker tornado by the time it came close to us. NWS Albuquerque rated unknown, but believed to be EF1. This was not on purpose and I am still grateful and thankful for Hunter's ability to navigate and get through it. It was a once in a lifetime situation and I am happy to be able to tell the story.
We started in Logan, just northwest of Tucumcari. The storm moved southeast relatively slowly. We took the south route through the canyon and I did not get great footage during that time. It wasn't until we hit north of Grady that I started to get good footage of the event. We ended the night just east of Clovis when the supercell decided to travel further south.

Crazy scary stuff for New Mexico. This used to never happen. I grew up in Alamogordo, and this just breaks my heart. I have family in the Clovis area. Everyone is fine, but it so easily could have been otherwise.
I've ridden out tornados in the Plainview/Lubbock/Brownfield area and it changes who you are.

This is like an actual NIGHTMARE. Legit scariest thing I've ever seen
This storm was my first legitimate "oh crap" moment storm chasing. I was trying to escape south out of Texico and got caught in an inflow-generated dust storm from a dry field. I could barely see past my hood. My only option was to turn around and drive under the effing wall cloud to hit Highway 70 and head east.
This reminds me of the May 31, 2013 El Reno Storm!
Did this structure remind anyone else of Elreno in 2013?
It definitely was rain wrapped and seemed a bit unpredictable. You may be right about that.
It did catch a lot of experienced chasers off guard who went south. Glad it wasn’t as powerful (that we know of) and as fast.

We were a few minutes ahead of you in that loooonnnggg convoy. There was plenty of hail there but you guys definitely took the brunt of it!! I saw my green truck in your video about a minute in haha.

I'm not even sure how you were able to drive in that near the end there. It was so dark and all of the wind, rain, and sleet too. I was wondering if you were trying to drive into the center of it.
