My cousin was watching Doctor Who on WTTW when this happened. He was 16 at the time. As a huge Doctor Who fan, at first he was annoyed that his show was strangely interupted. Then he became somewhat fascinated with what was occurring and wound up finding the whole thing rather humorous.

Glad you are still going and not giving up regardless of the small reception. • @cm603
    @cm603 Před 6 lety +57

If it was shot on Video 8, it would have to be dubbed to VHS, producing a 2nd generation. This was maybe from direct VCR to broadcast with the equipment you talked about. The skewing is part of the Time Base Corrector maybe not functioning properly. When the jumpcut occured, there is a colorful green line going down slowly, and the skew was partially still there.
*This was most likely shot on VHS-C because of the adapters. Also, the reason [i think] why the audio was static was because of the audio carrier was interfering with the audio carrier of the WGN MW transmitter on the truck. Since the audio carrier of NTSC was 4.5mHz above the video signal, the audio would not interfere [well sometimes interfere] with the video. The MW transmitter of WGN was interfering with the hijacker's transmission, which was clashing with WGN's MW audio. WGN was able to pull the hijacker's plug, forcing the MW transmission to go somewhere else. Solution? Record a rant on WGN and broadcast that on 11 due to a lack of staff at 11pm. As such, transmit that message then! The audio carrier was not clashing on any other MW transmissions unless people were microwaving popcorn for a movie. In this case, never transmit illegally.*

From a technician point of view, you may find it interesting to know when you have 2 FM stations transmitting on the same exact frequency, you get the kind of "ringing" distortion you hear in the video.
Back when television was analog, the video is amplitude modulated while the sound is frequency modulated, like on FM radio, but on different bands.
I am not certain what you hear was intentional voice alteration, but instead may be interference from WTTN & WGN original audio signal.

    My theories:
The WGN intrusion was a test. Someone had to know the microwave interlink frequencies of both WGN and WTTW. WGN being a test because it had no audio or they weren't close enough to intrude on the audio. But they were close and powerful enough to completely over ride WTTW. Hasn't anyone tried to digitally clean up the audio? Demodulate the ring to get the voice.
The reason we join the intrusion video in progress is the operators need a signal and a few moments to get the intrusion up to strength.

Looks like he was imitating Max Headroom the best he could and appeared to be acting very odd.

The biggest clue for me in this is Chuck Swirsky. Max must've been a Chicago/Illinois sports fan or at least enough of a fan to know who Chuck Swirsky was. It makes me laugh how serious people took this, even today maybe, as if it was the fucking crime of the century! It was a small interruption that, dare I say, made TV a little interesting just for a moment. It's good to make the zombie TV viewer twitch sometimes!

They said that it took a lot of special equipment, but that’s not true.. I took over a TV and radio station that I worked for (the radio side) one day (WITH PERMISSION to show my boss how easily it could be done) from my car with ham radio equipment and a video camera

There's a mix of liking to know because it was such a rare thing for anyone to intercept a tv signal, but also yes, if anyone ever did step up you can bet authorities would be on it. I dunno about internet trolls though, I think it's a little too "back in the day" for them to really care and there's a few cases of known media hijacks where those people's relations seem to have been allowed to slip quietly back into private life.
But it wasn't like Max was spouting complete gibberish, he references the channel he originally wanted to hi-jack - it must of been someone who knew the station well enough. Maybe a really dedicated but spurned fan or an ex-employee.

Just regarding the broadcast being joined halfway through. I reckon the first WGN hijacking was the beginning of the tape (starting from black). His movements on the WGN footage don't match any point on the WTTW footage. The hijacker either forgot to rewind the tape or it took time for the transmitter to warm up before it could be used, by which time the video had already started.
I also think the rotating background was done using a blue screen. Max isn't reflecting off it nor is he casting any visible shadow The last shot however, you can see the camera moves slightly and the background moves with the scene, which wouldn't happen with a blue screen.

i noticed the different video sections too. but i think "that does it, he's a freakin nerd!" and the chuck swirsky comment fitted perfectly with interrupting Dan Roan's sports broadcast. if the comments were said further into the hijacking it wouldn't have had the same effect.
the only thing i could think is whether hacking WTTW was part of the plan after all and the 1st video we saw was actually the one intended to be played on WTTW and that maybe the hacker got the videos confused under stress.

Lived in KC at the time with my dad watching the WGN 9pm news on cable in the basement. Suddenly he yells “get down here!” and when I arrived it was already over but said some guy broke into programming... danced around for a few seconds... and nobody knew what happened.
There’s an old blog or forum post somewhere on the net by a guy who (supposedly) knew the group responsible... but wasn’t involved himself. He goes into considerable detail how they did it.

My theory on this has been Max was the annoying weekend sports guy who was fired due to politicking by Chuck Swersky and the incident was his way of getting back at all those who wronged him, like a big "fuck you" to them. I am still convinced it was the work of a former employee of WGN, but in my fantasy world he was killed by the man and girl in the news video for interrupting their Doctor Who!! lol!

First, congrats on your fifth year anniversary. I cannot believe it's five years since you first came up with the Oddity Archive. Second, 30 years since the Max Headroom Incident? Jeeze, that really makes me feel old, lol! I was 4 in 1987, and I remember this happening on WGN down here in Texas because we get the station in my hometown of Odessa. I never knew they came back for a second hacking until I saw your show, and apparently third time as well. Yeah, there's a video on CZcams where they allegedly came back again on another station, in another state, where they interrupted a school concert or play that was being aired on a local cable access channel in Massachusetts. It seemed like it was the same scenario that happened in the first two hackings, with perhaps either over-budded voicing or live voicing over the video since the second and third videos have different subjects in them. So my feeling is that the footage was at least pre-recorded, and then either they borrowed or stole a news van, or made a make-shift satellite system they used on a rooftop of an apartment building nearby to air their little brew-ha-ha. I also agree that we need to let the sleeping dogs lie on this one. So what if they hijacked the airwaves 30 years ago? It wasn't that big of a deal. They didn't hurt anyone. Time to say goodnight on this case. Just for fun, I'll post all 3 interruptions below.
