Hi Nicola, thank you for this helpful tutorial. Always good to have a refresher course. By the way, if you pull the thread from the side of the DMC label that contains the number, the thread will always pull easily without becoming tangled.
Just catching up with the videos and I learned so much from this one. Thank you again for sharing all the different options to stitch. Last year, Vonna Pfeiffer shared the Vonna pin stitch. It was on Instagram and the date was 6.11.23 and on the second slide she shows how she does a pin stitch. I have used this when there is that one stitch that stands alone for you can also thread it under your stitch on the back. I start in the top right so I just started mine that way. It has been helpful and your thread is not wasted in the back. Your pin stitch on the other video is amazing. Looking forward to the next video.
I know I'm way behind everyone else, but I've kitted everything up and am ready to start my stitching. I've been stitching around 60 years and have never had the courage to try a pin stitch, but thanks to you detailed explanation, I can now do them. I have been cross stitching, probably 50 to 60 years. I was taught to hand sew, so I come up on the top left and went down on the bottom right. Come back up on the bottom, left, and go down in the top right. When I do a row of stitches, I am sewing or cross stitching from the right to the left. I feel like I'm doing it backwards but it works.

Not sure if this was mentioned in any of the comments on how to start unwinding a skein of DMC floss. Start by finding an end near the larger label (it has a bar code and the DMC color number). Pull slowly to avoid any knots, wind on a bobbin or just take the length of floss needed.

Oh. My. Goodness. What a fantastic video. The best instruction I have ever seen about elements of cross stitch that I thought I knew entirely. I love these videos, and I thank you, Nicola.
I learned so much in this video. One of the main things I learned is how to work cross stitch using the English method. As a kid, I learned the Danish method and never knew any other way until recent years. However, whenever I've tried working one stitch at a time, it always looked most untidy and not at all like any thing else I did with cross stitch, embroidery or hand stitching needed for clothing construction. So I was frustrated because I've always taken great pride in my ability to form a neat and tidy stitch on wherever my needle had to travel. I also appreciated the demonstration of the pin stitch as I'm still working on getting that perfected. Knowing that the needle must pierce the thread is the key that helps me know that the whole thing won't ravel to bits years from now. I really loved seeing how to make reversible stitches. I have some pieces (a couple of HATS, actually) awaiting their turn when finally kitted and I feel more prepared to work them now. I like that working these stitches adds a little more coverage because sometimes a single thread leaves things a bit of a bare appearance. Thank you, Nicola, for your wonderful instruction. Even an old cat like me can learn something new.

Hi Nicola, I chose to do reversible cross stitch method 2 for the top corner, and for letters A-F I did method 3. I probably have too many legs in some of my stitches but they worked out and look great. It's the corners that give me issues but writing it down and doing the path in my head really help. Thank you for all you kind words of wisdom and sharing techniques. I look forward to the next lessons. And this was not too long. Time flies when you are having fun. ❤

I have always been intrigued as to how a reversible cross stitch was constructed without having either a vertical or horizontal line somewhere; now I know - you have to have one but it’s not obvious. Thank you ! I don’t know if other commenters have mentioned but DMC thread is pulled from the end where the number label is. After 30 yrs of being a DMC girl, I only found that out in the past couple of years. You live and learn.

I stich from botton left to top right so as you were sharing on how to do the reversable stitch wrote exactly as your were doing the stich and then I made it my own using botton left to top right. Thank you so much Nicola. I have a sampler with Marking Cross in it which I have been struggling with forever. I was thinking maybe the girl who stitched the reversible stitch you cannot figure was having trouble figuring it out too, but you did find it in a book. I've used 3 or 4 different books and videos and have done a version, but I don't think it is quite right. :) I use a lot of fiber making those letters! Thank you! I agree with the second reversable stitch method. I've actually done this before but had forgotten how. I need to practice the pin stitch start. I have been using the waste knot and it is very wasteful. This video is so welcome and helpful. Your boxers are lovely too. Your method will save me so much thread … Just to add what I have learned about the „right“ thread to pull on a skein … it will always be the threadend which comes out on the outside of the color number … now to try your „over one“ method 😊

Like the "trick" of counting a long row of stitches by doing half stitches but doing whole stitches every 10th. I happened to be at a spot on a project where that helped and I tried that while you talked... Worked so well! When you make the reversible stitches you are laying them opposite of the way I usually stitch. My second leg, top leg leans left \ . I was trying to do the reversible stitch and realized they would not match the way I usually cross. I'm going to practice so my x's cross the same way.
When you use reversible cross stitch in a sampler, the twists and turns required for some motifs will mean that the top stitch will lay in a different orientation.

I have always been intrigued as to how a reversible cross stitch was constructed without having either a vertical or horizontal line somewhere; now I know - you have to have one but it’s not obvious. Thank you !
I don’t know if other commenters have mentioned but DMC thread is pulled from the end where the number label is. After 30 yrs of being a DMC girl, I only found that out in the past couple of years. You live and learn.

I had actually never even heard of reversible cross stitch and I was quite intrigued. Also I've always run my finishing threads on the back side of my needlework but now I'll try it on the front. Thank you for your earlier suggestion of taking notices. I stich from botton left to top right so as you were sharing on how to do the reversable stitch wrote exactly as your were doing the stich and then I made it my own using botton left to top right. You are amazing for sharing your stitchy knowledge with all of us.

Thank you so much Nicola. I have a sampler with Marking Cross in it which I have been struggling with forever. I was thinking maybe the girl who stitched the reversible stitch you cannot figure was having trouble figuring it out too, but you did find it in a book. I've used 3 or 4 different books and videos and have done a version, but I don't think it is quite right. :) I use a lot of fiber making those letters! I love your teaching and look forward to the upcoming videos. Thank you so much for doing this. I learn things from you every time I play one of your videos. Thank you! I agree with the second reversable stitch method. I've actually done this before but had forgotten how. I need to practice the pin stitch start. I have been using the waste knot and it is very wasteful. This video is so welcome and helpful. Your boxers are lovely too. I've shared this video with my eldest son who had to put his sweet doggie Max down last year as he was suffering with cancer.

Your method will save me so much thread … Just to add what I have learned about the „right“ thread to pull on a skein … it will always be the threadend which comes out on the outside of the color number … now to try your „over one“ method 😊

I love learning the practical amidst the pretty... Like the "trick" of counting a long row of stitches by doing half stitches but doing whole stitches every 10th. I happened to be at a spot on a project where that helped and I tried that while you talked... Worked so well!

When you make the reversible stitches you are laying them opposite of the way I usually stitch. My second leg, top leg leans left \ . I was trying to do the reversible stitch and realized they would not match the way I usually cross. I'm going to practice so my x's cross the same way.
When you use reversible cross stitch in a sampler, the twists and turns required for some motifs will mean that the top stitch will lay in a different orientation.
I always embroider the thread with the direction of the grain. It’s much neater.
