Alezandra Davila - It has nothing to do with a product being drugstore or high end. Certain ingredients will be problematic for individual people, regardless of what a product costs or what pricing category it falls into. CeraVe doesn’t work for everybody, but there are dozens of other “drugstore” products to choose from, so there’s an affordable product for everyone. If the major brands don’t work for you, keep looking.

Anonymous Mouse yes I am an esthetician School just find that some products can be drugstore some no but if you are having acne and are using a drugstore routine for 12-26 weeks. Then maybe try to see if it’s your cleanser or moisturizer plus in Europe they sell a lot of drugstore stuff but over here you can’t get those things it has to be through a doctor but certain things you can do drugstore as long as you have no rashes I don’t see why not but usually when I see ppl it’s reactions it’s due to. Harsh acne cleanser so when I say hey buy a gentle one they like it and ask for more products in that line

A few years ago I read some beauty article where a doctor claimed that moisturizer makes your skin lazy. I decided to stop putting moisturizer on my naturally dry skin that hardly produces any oils for a whole summer. I walked around with BONE DRY skin for an entire summer waiting for my skin to stop being ~lazy~ and moisturize itself 😂😂 I will never forget how dry my face was that summer and how I begrudgingly accepted that my skin will just have to be lazy and “dependent” on moisturizers! Lol thank you Dr. Dray for debunking this crazy myth! Don’t stop wearing moisturizer if it helps you, people!

    - One esthetician claims you can oil cleanse for 20 min to remove oil plugs/ sebaceous filaments. Does it work or does it strip the skin?

I get maybe bc if u leave the oil fully on your skin than maybe you can’t let hydration and moisture in. But in my opinion and experience I do prefer it to like physical exfoliation that’s a big no no.

Who has the time and patience to oil cleanse for 20 minutes, every night? Not me. I do this for maybe 2-3 minutes, rinse and then do another minute or so with a gel cleanser. That gets all my makeup, sunscreen, sebum and “environmental pollutants” off my skin and I can then apply nighttime skincare products. In the morning, I work the same gel cleanser into my damp skin, for 2 minutes.... and all is fine.

Dr. Dray, thank you for addressing the moisturizer concern. I have had dermatologists caution me to stop using moisturizers. This idea has been widespread through the recommendation of Dr. Zein Obagi, M.D., a Beverly Hills-based dermatologist who has his own skincare line. Dr. Obagi believes skin gets addicted to replacement moisture and stops supplying its own hydration from within the body, and your natural hydration, he says, is what really keeps skin healthy and young. I have been trying to find the scientific explanation supporting this. Being someone who uses tretonoin, it was difficult to give up moisturizing my skin. Thank you for clearing this up!

Tbh the before and after pictures from patients using his products are really fantastic and convinced me that his theory behind the use of moisturizer and also that his “medical grade” line of products are really great. However I’ve been looking at your videos for sometime and respect your opinion when it comes to skin and skincare. I have a facial steamer but I don’t actually use it for skincare. I use it for when I get really bad colds and can’t breathe through my nose. It’s the best. I used to just jump in a hot shower but then the water would get cold soon and you already felt like crap from being so sick. You don’t have to worry about that with a facial steamer and it saves water compared to the long hot shower method (my facial steamer maybe takes a cup of water for 5 minutes of steam. Then, you just refill for longer steam time)

I wish I understood better how Myth #3 doesn't apply to retinoids. If your skin doesn't get used to ingredients, then how can skin build up a tolerance to retinoids over time? When I start using retinoids, my skin peels for the first couple of weeks and then calms down and seemed to "get used to it". I've had dermatologists tell me that that's normal. I'm curious how that works physiologically...

That part about medical grade was quite interesting. Here where I live medical grade skincare is used to describe products like Skinoren or Dexeryl cream. Or sunscreens made specifically for people with sun intolerance. They're are registered as drugs, used to treat specific medical condition, they don't require prescription, have an actual research behind them, only necessary ingredients (no fragrance, millions of extracts and oils and vitamins), only scientifically proven claims on packaging (so no "anti-aging", no "skin feels softer"). And they are usually pretty cheap. Stuff like Skinceuticals is considered here as luxury brand, like La Mer or Biologique Recherche, no dermatologist would ever suggest to a patient to buy such an expensive product.

Hi, doc! I respect your opinion, but I have to tell you, the only thing that stopped my recurring, cystic acne dead in its tracks in my early 20`s was a steam facial with extraction. Prior to that I had been seeing a dermatologist in Manhattan who charged me HUGE sums of money for staring at my face, poking at it with a needle (which left some nasty scars, btw) and prescribing me salicylic acid (which wasn`t really covered by insurance, so I couldn`t really afford it). My face was disfigured and this is not an exaggeration. I remember my chin swelling to almost twice the size and turning purplish blue from a cyst. So one day, out of sheer desperation, I walked into a spa in Midtown run by these lovely Eastern European ladies who steamed and extracted all the gunk out of my face. After two sessions, my skin was back to normal. It was a pretty invasive procedure, they used needles and squeezed out all the sebum plugs, but their hands never left scars on my face and solved my problem at a fraction of the cost of what that Columbia Presbyterian board certified dermatologist was charging me. And HE DID scar me! So, as you say, unless I see some serious studies backing this up, steam and extraction do work wonders for severely clogged pores.

For the longest time I didn’t use a moisturizer because I have oily combo skin. I thought and I guess I was told that a moisturizer would do harm to my skin. After doing some research, using a moisturizer is great for oily skin especially after washing your face. I learned that if you have oily skin or oily combo skin your body freaks out and thinks “where is the moisture?! (Oil) then it over produces the oil and causes breakouts. Since I’ve used moisturizer after washing my face I rarely have break outs. I have less breakouts because I am adding moisture to my face after washing it. Your face is dry after washing, so it needs moisture. I use the Aveeno Clear Complexion in the AM because it has SPF and I use an ELF moisturizer in the PM. It doesn’t have SPF in it, but it’s also a really nice moisturizer. Currently have one zit on my chin, but my friend is coming 🩸 🤣
