To me, Sealand's existence kind of begs the question: Could anyone with the resources build a structure in international waters and declare it their own country?
Yes. It's bit complex, as you have to be recognized, but there are a lot of cruise ships that basically do that. You gotta have the money of small country to pull it off tho. Also people can just invade and take your stuff, so most just sign up under one of the tax heavens and leave it at that.

I work at a cafe where we have a 95-year-old regular called Bill who was stationed on Sea Land during World War II when he was 15 years old. Amazing man with some amazing stories.
Edit: Bill has sadly now passed, aged 96 in December 2021. A truly wonderful man.
I've had the privilege to speak to two ww2 vets at length and they really do have some of the most surreal stories. I don't believe they used much if any embellishment. Just a very wild thing to experience that hopefully nobody else ever has to on that scale.
Share some of his stories plssss!!
Can you share a story that was really traumatizing to him. If you cant its okay
@@yurix6072 I'm sorry to say that Bill passed away in December 2021, aged 96. One of my favourite stories of his was that of his time evacuating women and children from Javanese islands in the Dutch East Indies prior to Japanese invasion. There were two boats that took part in the evacuation of these particular islands, and two people who were on Bill's were a mother and daughter. Fast forward 60 years and Bill was on holiday in Holland, where he popped into a cafe for some ice cream. He was sitting when the cafe owner came over and asked if he had been in the navy during WW2 (Bill always wore his navy cap every day). It turned out that the cafe owner's mother was one of the children rescued by Bill's boat, and so he closed the cafe for the rest of the day, took Bill to his home to meet his mother, and showed him around the town. They stayed in contact until his death. I just love how it always reminds me of how small a world we live in, and how with Bill's attitude towards people , talking (and singing) to literally anyone and everyone, it makes it a hell of a lot smaller still.
He was also a recipient of the Arctic Star, awarded to veterans who served on convoys to provide aid to Northern Russia, where there were enormous casualty rates, and horrific weather conditions. Bill would tell about having to constantly be chiselling ice off the boat to relieve the extra weight so that the boat wouldn't become unstable, and that when submarines sank the convoys ships people would be dead within minutes. It's interesting to think that he received the medal from President Putin - he died before the invasion of Ukraine, I would have been very interested to hear his thoughts on the situation.
@@dunnomynameso746 He would often say that there were many things that he would never talk about as they were too horrible or painful to remember. He was involved in evacuating allied soldiers from Japanese prisoner of war camps after the war, which is one such time that he would never talk about. As I mentioned in the comment above, his time in the arctic was incredibly perilous. A huge number of boats were lost in those convoys, and he said that there was no chance of rescuing anyone as once people were in the water they'd be dead within a couple of minutes due to the extreme cold. I can't imaging the terror of being in such an environment, in your teens no less, and being attacked from below by invisible enemies such as u-boats, or from above by bombers. It's important these people's memory never fade.

They could build dirt and rock up around the base to turn it into an actual island. That could make Sealand last longer too, since eventually the structure will probably collapse due to weathering.
Also if Sealand is going to be an island, it should be at least one square kilometer. Like, imagine being an island and you're 4 square meters. Even the smallest island in the Caribbean (St. Martin) is 3.18 square kilometers.

Judging waters by how far a cannon can shoot is pretty smart if you think about it, if a ship enters british waters, a cannon can hit it within seconds, of course, if theres any cannons left,
Yes, but we can shoot cannons across many bodies of water
Back in the day it did. Obviously, by the end of WW2, the world had moved on and there was a clear need for a new system. it took decades, but UNCLOS was the end result, which also - in the real world - made the Sealand question redundant. As a result of UNCLOS, the UK's territorial waters were extended from 3nmi to 12nmi, bringing Sealand within UK waters (and even if it were more than 12nmi, it wouldn't have helped as Sealand sits on the seafloor, which would fall within the UKs much larger EEZ - indeed, the entire North Sea falls within the EEZ of one of the basin countries, as no point lies more than 200nmi from coastline or another.
what makes it a pretty bad system is the fact that your borders would 100% depend on what kind of cannons you had installed. If you ever downgraded them to save money, your territory shrinks. Not only that, but as technology advanced cannons were able to shoot further and further. This means that international boundaries changed every time a better cannon was invented somewhere as now cannons can reach out to that new distance.
Imagine all the legal loopholes available…I’d turn it into a hygidome and have a heirloom seed vault and a elevator that goes down to the bottom of the sea with a underwater sea dome like sandy has in spongebob

This video is a great insight into Sealand. Presumably somebody has to be there permanently. Additionally you'd need resources and man power to sustain an invasion. I guess that's the reason no one else has bothered. Also, it's probably the families fear that if they opened it up to more people. It would only take one wrongly trusted person, and the family could easily lose Sealand forever. In that respect, it must be quite a solitary existence. Your footage was on a good day with calm seas, I dread to imagine winter conditions. Very interesting video none the less. Thanks for sharing 👍

This structure was built as a boat, with the two towers and platform as a superstructure. The boat was towed into position and sunk. But I seriously doubt the designers intended it to last this long. I wonder how much longer the structure itself has before it collapses. Sealand is a world treasure and I hope nothing happens to it. There's no reason someone couldn't build a new structure with the same idea. A large boat with two towers and a platform as a superstructure. You'd tow it next to Sealand and sink it, and bam, Sealand would grow 2x. Moreover, you could sink it before anyone could stop you. This would also guarantee the continued survival of Sealand. It's too bad most billionaires don't have have the stones to help facilitate it.
They're looking at colonizing space; building private space stations
@THE GREAT CORNHOLIO As long you don't plant to coup in long term, because Sealand was suffering for once. It was attacked by mercenaries hired by insider, hijacking the place.
It was built as a boat that can withstand gunfire and cannon fire from aircraft cannons. That's significantly more durability than needed for just being a habitable sunken boat..
If they expanded in any concerning way they would be dealt with quickly, they only exist because no one cares about some on piece of metal in the sea but if you start occupying a large amount of territory or threatening to interfere with British naval operations they are done.
