  • The 1972 and 1974 Formula 1 World Champion leads a duo of beautiful Gold Leaf-liveried Lotus F1 cars up the Hill at the Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard. This was part of a celebration of these two incredible cars, one the first to wear a sponsorship livery, the other the most successful F1 car of all time. Fittipaldi, who also won the 1989 IndyCar championship and the '89 and '93 Indy 500, started his F1 career in a 49 and won his first championship in a 72. #F1 #FOS #Lotus

72 or 49, which is the most iconic Lotus?

      72. Finally got the aero right. And ran for years, albeit at the end because the follow up (the 76) was hopeless).

The 72 for sure. Every modern open wheel race car is descended from it.

Seeing that first car, in those colours, instantly brought back some great memories.
I saw Graham Hill and Jochen Rindt at Sandown in 1969, in the Tasman Championship in Australia.
True, the cars were 2.5 litres, 1969 vintage, but that colour scheme! Wonderful.
Actually, Lotus was the first team to adopt a colour scheme related to their main sponsors.
In those days, they lead the way in many respects.

    Stunning.
I'd love to see an entire fleet of identically prepared versions of that car, and hand them to the current batch of F1 drivers. See what happens.
I know, safety, reliability, and all that, but it would awesome to see who can really drive & who could push the car to it's limits.

The bulk of today's drivers have never even driven a manual (not a race car, any car) 😢

It's impossible for me to watch that Gold Leaf Lotus 49 and not immediately think of Jochen Rindt who won his 1st GP in it at Watkins Glen in Oct. '69 without knowing that he
was already running out of time and would not even get the chance to defend his victory there the next year.
