  • China had a "Century of Humiliation" that started in the early 19th Century. The British Empire led the way in exploiting unrest under the Qing to press for deeper control of the Imperial government. France, the USA, Russia, and other nations joined in with the British in using military force (or the threat of military force) to both weaken the Qing and then prop them up as their favored government to deal with in the region. Let's take a look at the history and how high-minded ideals clashed with cold hard profits.

I very much enjoyed your talk. I love reading about the late Qing dynasty and the late Tokugawa shogunate similarly. I also really enjoy the late anthem of the Qing dynasty, "The cup of solid gold" Great song.

Hopefully a future Victoria 3 patch adds some way to control subject manpower, to model the British Indian army. It would fit thematically for sphere of influence but I think they've already revealed all the features we're getting in that.

So he didnt get into college and decided to try to conquer China. Reminds me of an austrian who got rejected from artschool in 1907 and 1908.

Also a frustrated teacher, like Mao and Stalin. We should pay teachers better and have better access to higher education to avoid the needless deaths of millions.

Basically we have Jesus' Brother and Queen Victoria as the strongest drug lord ever. I also understand your addiction to books, i have no more space to store them and I keep getting them.

I went fully digital with my book collection. :-) But yes, and after Hong was out in 1864, Queen Victoria was the kingpin of the operation.

The history told in china heavy favor the imperial rule through out centuries, while most people have little right during the Qing dynasty. In some way, the foreigners helped Chinese break away from the imperial rule, although its a heavy price.

When I see how many revolts there were against the Qing, even without the Taiping, it seems like the Qing were on their way out. The Qing lasted an extra 50-60 years because of foreign power supporting it.
