Great movie, but a small error (here it comes) in Radio Telephone Procedure (RATEL ("Ray-Tel"), Richard Burton should have said the proword "OUT" at 0:47, not "OVER AND OUT" (two Prowords) as "OVER" means "I await your response/respond/there's more to come" and "OUT" means "End of transmission"/End of Message/no further message, etc. So Richard Burton should have said: "You must be joking...OUT" or "Broadsword (Callsign)...you must be joking...OUT".
they are risking capture and interrogation. As officers they would be interrogated rather nastily...there is another reason, but you have to watch the movie...
Not a lot of historic accuracy or research shown here. Apart from the fact that radio communications of this type would never have been conducted in plane voice for security reasons the voice technology of the time depicted was limited to very large instillations or very short distances. Typically a portable transceiver of the time such as a ZC1 weighed in at 50 plus lbs without batteries and aerial. Any long distance work was done in Morse code which required a separate unit and to get any reliable range needed a half wave length aerial correctly orientated which for HF band work was 40 meters. Not the kind of thing that you man packed into a war zone and set up in 5 minutes.
I have got this movie DVD of Richard Burton Clint Eastwood Michael Hornden Mary Ure Ingrid Pitt Derrin Nesbitt and Anton Differing are both German Officers in Where Eagles Dare I am dedicating this movie DVD to my old school friends who are both sisters as I hope to see them both again very soon to Chris and Hester from Billyxxx
The admiral and the major knew the team had at least one 'traitor'. The assumption was that, if no one on the team admitted to killing the dead team members, and they did not die by accident, nor they were not killed by the (enemy) Germans, then there was, indeed a traitor amongst them and the more they pushed on the greater the chance of further murders. That's the basic answer. Can't tell you more. Gotta watch the movie.
What a bloody brilliant film.
Makes you proud to be Welsh.

Not to mention calling on a small-ish radio all the way from Austria, in the mountains, with lots of Germans around
Correct radio parlance would go out the window in a nervy life and death situation like that.
It's called dramatic license.@@howardsend6589
“Over and out”… Oh those were the days when absurd rubbish was spoken by A-list actors.

Prior to summary execution for fighting in your enemy’s uniform, applied by all sides in WWII.
@@michaeljames4904 After 1942, Hitler issued the "Commando Order" - They would have been executed even if they were wearing Allied uniforms.

Why does he order him to save himself?
Because he is acting for the benefit of the traitor
Spoiler............. Admiral Rolland knew the mission was likely infiltrated but not exactly who by or who the main traitor was.
