Steven Wilson is a modern day Maestro. His music is phenomenal. This track comes from his ‘Hand. Cannot. Erase.’ album. It is a masterpiece! Also, check out his stuff with his band ‘Porcupine Tree’. ‘Anaesthetise, Live in Tilburg’ would be a great place to start. You’re welcome! 😊
Anesthetize is 17 minutes of a blissful experience…. The whole Fear of a Blank Planet.. Is a masterpiece like the other myriad of albums that Steven Wilson puts out
Steven Wilson is an incredible artist. He has been likened to the David Bowie and with good reason. This such a brilliant moving piece, the super animation videos with this is excellent. He has gorgeous melodies, and is the true spirit of modern prog rock.
The film was made for the song. Steven Wilson, for me, is without doubt, the greatest living Artist/Composer around. He's been around for about 30 years and although has had some success, is one of the most under-rated artists ever. Has been in many bands, probably Porcupine Tree being the most well known. He's also remixed many famous albums from such great bands as Yes, Jethro Tull. King Crimson to name a few. I would recommend the albums "Hand.Cannot.Erase" and "To the bone" if you'd like to hear more. Great reaction guys, thank you.
I met Steven once. I met all of PT. It was awesome. I caught them at a private concert in a record store. There were only like 40 of us. They made a live album out of it called “We Lost The Skyline” and I can hear myself cheering on the album 😁
Thanks Paul! Appreciate the perspective!
@@jainelson8840 holy shit. You were there for that. Talk about right place at the right time!
To me Steven Wilson is up there with the Beatles, bob Dylan, Pink Floyd. He is that caliber. Can't wait till he tours again.
This song is on Hand Cannot Erase, which Steven wrote loosely based on a true story of a woman in England who was found dead in her apartment 3 years after she died. Apparently she was a beautiful young woman in her 30's and it seems no one missed her when she died. The songs were Steven's thoughts on what would cause someone to die so alone, that no one noticed.
I saw that documentary 6 or 7 years ago. It's an amazing piece of filmmaking.
Wow that’s sad
Wilson, to me, has been the brightest musical light of the last quarter century...his solo work, and with Porcupine Tree...you'll want to go down this rabbit hole....
Thanks Steve!
Steven Wilson and Porcupine Tree are a fantastic musical journey. Can I make a suggestion that I am sure many others will echo is anestheise live from Tilburg. Hi from Australia. John
Hello from New York!
@@SightAfterDark definitely watch Anesthetize.
Really beautiful. I think it's the first Steven Wilson song I've listened to. He's a composer. I believe he started the band Porcupine Tree and went solo, plus he does a lot of digital find PTH new me xrs of classic albums ms from bands like Jethro Tull and Gentle Giant. The song with the video moved to lump in my throat, quivery face status even when you two were talking about it because I know the feeling having experienced it.
This is definitely one of the most powerful pieces we’ve ever heard
And Porcupine Tree started as his solo project. :)
Wilson had some other excellent song/ film collaborations. Check out the song “The Raven That Refused To Sing.”
Thanks!
Drive Home is another great one from him.
Did you guys spot the headline in the newspaper on the floor?
Also, to answer your question, people had been reaching out to her. We see her collect her letters and cards and store them away in a box in the cabinet.
Dan seemed to acknowledge that he read the headline. That shot should probably stay on the screen a bit longer. It tells us that her two children and husband were murdered in a mass shooting at a school.
It’s not until her acceptance of the loss that she is able to read the condolence cards. And, then she can trust herself to walk past the tree, closer to the cliff. Watch the Royal Albert Hall soundcheck performance where this video played behind the band to see a truly lonely telling of the story. Ninet Tayeb gives her all singing for an audience of none. It’s kind of haunting.
@@rtwbikerider - Yeah, I love that Royal Albert Hall gig. Pariah on that show is better than the album version.
Yeah, we saw the headline :,(
Steven Wilson is the closest (IMHO) that music has got to matching the awesomeness of 1970's Pink Floyd. A prolific writer of metal through prog through just fun ditties, now with an established mixing / remastering career - the go-to guy to get major works from back-in-the-day remastered, with glittering results. No kidding, he has changed the industry certainly for the better.
Always recommend "Trains" (with his band, Porcupine Tree) although many other great examples. Often, live performances outshine the studio versions (which are always spot-on) esp. the Tilburg recordings. If you want to try PF-alike, try the very early "The Sky Moves Sideways" LP which sounds like something PF would have done around the time of Meddle.
His later works though have had a mixed reception - suspect he is over-working and needs a break. Definitely burning the candle at both ends + the middle too.
Fantastic reaction guys, Steven Wilson really is a genius, so much to check out if you want to go right in. I can’t explain but something about his music that just hits the spot! Hats off Jess Cope (owl house) for the video, they have done a few videos for Steven over the years, everyone is tops… thanks again guys, hopefully you will react to another of his tunes soon. 😉
Thanks for watching!
It perfectly describes the 5 stages of grief. Not necessarily in order, but they are all there. Acceptance, at the end is the 5th stage.
I believe this is the order... 1.Denial 2.Anger 3.Compromise 4.Depression 5.Acceptance. I might have 3&4 mixed up.
I second every comment on here. There is nothing i can add about Steven's catalogue that has not already been said before. Truly a fantastic musician. I will always have a soft spot for his previous band Porcupine Tree so would definitely recommend their song Anesthetize (live in Tilburg). A 17 min modern day Prog epic. Enjoy the ride!!
Melancholy is often viewed negatively, but Steven Wilson really tries to embrace the feeling because it's natural. Most of his music is melancholic, which, in my saddest days, really helped me to express my pain and not feel alone in it. It's normal to not like the lyrics are certain times, but when you need them they are very powerful.
Man .. every time I watch/listen to this song there's something in my eye....
😢 ❤️
Much of Steven Wilson's best lyric work revolves around pain and catharsis - not just the pain, but the moving through - the human growth possible in - our most terrible pains. This is my favorite, but "Drive Home" and "The Raven That Refused To Sing" are in the same vein. The movie in this case perfectly captures the song, too - Jess Cope & Owl House always do impressive work, but this, I think, is their best yet!
I first heard this song at a SW concert (the "Hand.Cannot.Erase" Tour) - the film played on a big screen behind the band. While I haven't borne this particular pain, I couldn't help but bawl my eyes out - and nearly cheered out loud at the final scenes! I *still* weep every time I watch it (OK - maybe I'm just one of *those* guys :-P)!
❤️
Yeah, echoing Paul's comments about SW and his work with PT and other projects he's been involved in. He's a wonderful artist and works so hard to create beautiful art that has both dark and light. H.C.E. is a musical journey and one that you never forget. Definitely worth the time to sit in a dark place, with headphones and a glass of wine.
Indeed
Also, a lot of his music is quite dark, not the sort of stuff to listen to to get you into party mode, lol.
Lol fair enough
OMG, how could you miss the newspaper Headline, next to the Nature Magazine ? THATS the story off it all :) Love you, Btw :)
We think we were slightly traumatized! We love you too!
Such a powerful song and Ninet does a great job as guest vocalist. You need to listen to the whole album HAND CANNOT ERASE - which came out a story STEVEN heard about a woman who lay dead in her apartment for a year with the tv on before anyone noticed. The album explores the highs and lows of an imagined life. You also listened to PORCUPINE TREE Steven’s other main project which he has just revived. He’s also a world class producer working on OPETH and remixing for YES KING CRIMSON GENTLE GIANT. Awesome talent. THE RAVEN WHO REGUSED TO SING will also gut you! But watch ANAESTHETIZE at Tilburg with PT and be amazed. If you fancy a challenge one day listen to KING CRIMSON - FRAKTURED Bob Fripp’s high wire act seldom duplicated - just jaw dropping.
Thanks for the breakdown!
"Emotionally fraught?" Love the spare, even pretty arrangement setting up the melancholy mood. The turmoil builds as it becomes clear the haunted looking character is dealing with a more lasting loss than "empty nest syndrome"...returns to coping, routine and the dancing ditty that helps distract from and deaden the pain..
Long a big fan of stop-motion animation, and this is beautifully done. Bravo, kudos to all involved. Gotta look for it, tuck it away in my archive, along with this vid, maybe the second of yours I've shared. Cheers, happy hump-day, hahahaha! ✌😘🎶🎸🎹💎💞👋😥
Well said! Happy Wednesday!
