  • Floating flies fished on the surface is one of the most exciting methods and the sight of a large aggressive predatory fish attacking the fly in a big splash can almost give the fisherman a heart attack... Over time, surface flies have been used extensively - but the American fly fisherman and fly tyer Larry Dahlberg started to experiment with the shape of the heads of his flies back in the late 1970's. Instead of having a large surface in the front to splash and "push" as much water as possible, he changed the shape so that the floating fly would dive instead of splashing. With a strong retrieve the fly could dive into the water and the stronger the pull - the deeper the fly could dive in a quick jerk - something that he discovered even the most skeptical predatory fish had difficulty standing for - a classic style of predator-fly was born.
    The Swedish fly tyer and specialist in large streamers, and especially deer hair flies such as poppers and divers, Andreas Andersson has been behind the ftying-vice, and in this video he will shares all his tips and tricks in handling and tying flies with deer hair. It almost seems like blasphemy to use a "work of art fly" like this one-hour-fly Andreas ties - but it is actually ment to be fished with, because as Andreas himself says about the fly: “throw it in the water and have fun with it”. So grab your tying-vice, some deer-hair, a cup of coffee and learn from the master himself.

    Thank you so much Andreas, and ahrex for releasing this! I've probably watched your first dahlberg vid at least 50 times, watching and digesting your techniques. Adding the narration, has provided so much more. Thank you for sharing your wisdom!🙏🙏🙏

    Wonderful Tie……beautiful deerhair art! For a fishing fly, a tan head would be simple as that is what the fish will see from underneath the fly. Nice Job!

    What cool technique. I’m just getting into tying with deer hair/spinning. I probably won’t make this my first tie 😂, but soon enough I’ll be watching this video again and making a Dahlburg Diver. Simply amazing!

      Thanks and he is a true magician 🙂 He is using a Regal Revolution but with a costum base. But just seen Regal introduced a bigger and heavier base which is more stabile when tying flies and putting a lot of pressure on the tying 🙂

      I know he har worked hard to raech this level of tying for years... lots of practice, lots of good and bad flies and a lot of vaccuming of deerhair below his tyingtable (and the rest of the room). But he is a world class deer-hair tyer 🙂

      Thanks for the respond. Tying a fly like this - and at this level, has made Andreas go through a lot of deer-hair for finding the perfect type of hair for his flies. But if you go through the tying description in the start of the video or in the video-description you should be fine 🙂

    Can you make these work with body hair if it flares well or do you always do belly hair? Thank you sir. Magnificent job.

    • @biggiesmalljaws
      @biggiesmalljaws Před 9 měsíci

      Belly hair is more buoyant than body hair and it’s naturally white so it dyes extremely well but yes you could use body hair such as a primo strip or hair designated as spinning hair as those have the hair density you’d be looking for, just know it won’t be as naturally buoyant. 👍

    How does it swim?

    • @ahrexhooks3652
      @ahrexhooks3652  Před rokem +1

      It swims very badly... splashing and popping water all over and attracing predators ;-) No you can retrive it slowly and just let it slide on the surface - but with more agressive retrieve the fly will dive a bit and pop the surface. It is also effectice to be fished on a sinking line. A really effective style of fly that can really trigger predators like bass, pike, muskies and big trouts - give it a try 🙂

      Incredibly close. If you prefer “random noodling on steel guitar which makes it harder to concentrate on the fly tying”, you can go with that if you prefer it to “Muzak”
