    I get the same sense of nostalgia, but they also extend the hope of meeting again in the future. There's a little detail that touches me a lot. Each chorus includes a phrase that changes just a little after each verse:
    1st time: "It's alright! See, I'm here. You are not alone."
    2nd time: "It's alright! See, I'm here. We are not alone."
    3rd time: "It’s alright! See, we are all here. No one is alone."
    I don't know why but especially during the pandemic that is such a comforting thought.
    Here’s a super fan (t-shinji) translation of Saiki’s heartfelt monologue / speech before this song was performed that day:
    Saiki: We were supposed to meet you today. For the first time in a year, we thought we could meet you all, those of you who could come to see us, but we can’t meet you in the end. I’m sorry. Even though it’s not my fault.
    We have been having days of turmoil for about a year. In the beginning, we were very surprised because we hadn’t experienced it before, and we had no experience of not being able to meet others in person. We were sad, but we found we shouldn’t be sad in this situation. When I saw you masters and princesses on social media, you were more depressed than us, and we thought that’s terrible.
    We Band-Maid have been thinking about how to cheer up all of you in the last one year. We truly wanted to meet you at Nippon Budokan, but it’s impossible because of COVID, so let’s wait for the day when we can meet.
    And in the last one year… or in the COVID pandemic, we have become more eager to cheer you up, and we Band-Maid realized again it’s important to give our songs to you.
    That’s why we wrote this song for Budokan.
    We made the album also in the pandemic, so it might have a little similar feel, but this song is planned for Nippon Budokan, and we really want to give it to you masters and princesses now.
    Budokan is not our goal but just a stepping stone. We will perform at bigger venues, and we promise we will bring you there and give you even better songs, so let’s keep it up a little more.
    This is our present for you masters and princesses. Please listen to it.

    Great reaction to a great song! Miku (red rose) does write her lyrics with multiple interpretations. You would have had better context of the song if you had watched what Saiki (blue rose) said before this song started. This was from an online show during the pandemic. They had shows cancelled at the beginning of the pandemic, then the world eased up the restrictions and they were scheduled to play at the famous Budokan Arena. Then the world shut down again and it was cancelled. So Band Maid did online shows for their fans around the world. The letter she read before they played this song was about how they missed their fans and that they felt bad for everyone that the show was cancelled, because playing at Budokan is a big deal for Japanese bands and it was a major goal for them. They promised that things will get better and we'll all be able to see each other at the shows. One of their few "love-letter" songs for the fans. Smile and Memorable are a couple of examples of these songs.

    DAYDREAMING is another great song that hits in a wonderful way. There's a guitar solo that I feel like the clouds are parting every time I hear it.

    “About Us” is Band Maid’s love letter with words of encouragement for their fans, delivered in the midst of the worldwide lockdowns.
    Remember, these are the same musicians with the same instrumentation that delivered “Domination.” It’s the ideal showcase for these musical shapeshifters. This doesn’t sound like a hard rock band slowing the tempo. It sounds like a jazzy, R&B band doing what they do best. That is one of the reasons I call Band Maid a “musician’s band.”
    From here, there’s only one ☝🏽 proper way to follow it up. “From Now On,” OMV. Have good headphones 🎧

    "About Us", in the vein of other great mid-tempo Band-Maid songs like Daydreaming, Anemone, Endless Story, PAGE, Wonderland, Awkward, Start Over, Mirage, At the Drop of a Hat and Smile, is an amazing song and personal message to their fans - a direction I'm glad to see them add to their journey toward world domination. And we get to hear MISA play the vibe she so enjoys. Their beautiful DVD/BD/CD set with 100 page picture book of this incredible concert is unbelievable! Thanks Brent, for bringing "About Us" to your viewers!

    During the pandemic the members felt isolated from one another and instead of focusing on themselves they thought how can we let our fans (Masters and Princesses) know we are missing them.
    So they wrote this beautiful song "About us".
    I love them for the music they make and who they are as people.

    I think you are spot on about each of us interpreting music according to our own experiences. Others will probably fill you in on the whole back story about the song but this was performed as a love letter to their fans during one of the bands online shows during the pandemic. I was already smitten by these ladies but when I heard this they had me hook, line and sinker.

    • @pastorbrentreacts
      @pastorbrentreacts  Před 4 měsíci +6

      Thank you. I have gotten a few folks who have appeared to be very unpleased that I am forming my own interpretations, which is where that elaborate explanation came from :D
      I know there's a story, there always is. :D
      I remember a time when I wrote a song and I shared it with a class I took back in high school. Someone came up to me and asked me if they could have a copy of it so I gave them a copy. Two weeks later they came back up to me and told me how what I wrote saved their life. I wrote about the chills that go up my back when I got scared... they said they interpreted it as a hope to not opt out on life because they could relate to it. There's no amounts of stories I could ever tell as to the meaning of that song that could ever take away from what that song meant to that guy.
      This is why I'm such a proponent of interpretive music... you don't know what someone is going through and there's a chance that they could be clinging onto that song for hope. It's not worth taking that hope away from them.

      It's funny but this band of Japanese ladies can teach one a lot about approaching life with gratitude and learning from experiences. As far as love goes they all seem to love and appreciate the chance to make people smile .@@pastorbrentreacts

    I agree, once a work of art is released to the world, it can resonate with people in unexpected ways because of things that no one could forsee when the piece was created.

    Thanks Brent, excellent reaction! BTW, Miku (backup-vocalist, rhythm guitarist) is the main lyricists and she writes lyrics that are often open to individual interpretation, even songs written for anime commissions. The fact that fans discuss them so much is proof enough. You've also probably figured out by now Band-Maid is multi-dimensional (fast, slow, hard, soft, etc.). If you gravitate toward the softer or more balladic side, I think you'd like Daydreaming, endless story (just released), Catharsis (acoustic), and Memorable (a post-pandemic love letter to fans). But the list is much longer than that if you include cuts from albums (also on their main site).

  • @BillHallisey
    @BillHallisey Před 4 měsíci +3

    Brent, I suggest "Wonderland". It also has a softer tempo which is a change from their high energy, fast paced rock sound. With Misa's incredibly soulful bass throughout the song, it has a jazzy feel (like About Us). The vocal harmonies are perfect and show-cases Saiki's vocal range. The instrumentation is perfectly placed throughout the song. If I'm down, I pull up the official live video of "Wonderland". It always makes me feel better, more relaxed and mellow. It's just a beautiful song.

    Love what you said about accepting other people as they are and embracing diversity. And stop being the moral police. And yes this is a fantastic song especially if you know the backstory. Even better if you can find a video with English subtitles of Saiki the lead singer giving her little speech beforehand. The song was written to the fans after the fans showed such concern that the band missed their big chance to play at the largest concert ever many years back. The band actually wrote a song to the fans telling them not to worry that they're not going anywhere and when this is over we'll all get together. And you know what? They were right!

      @pastorbrentreacts sorry about the terse delivery. Happy Easter! You can test your levels in Zoom before you start and you can adjust your levels in post by right clicking the file and choosing volume. Seems you just have your mic sensitivity too hot. Easy fix. Depending on the program you can also normalize the volume of the entire project in post as well. Good luck with your channel. 😊
