- Not all microphones are created equal. Where a dynamic handheld mic shines, a shotgun mic might fall short. No matter what type of video you're producing, hearing how mics perform with different placements can help you choose the right mic for the job. We test several types of mics including shotgun, dynamic handheld, and lavalier to illustrate the sound difference.

This was absolutely spot on. So well thought-out and presented.
The dynamic mic on the boom was just what I was looking for. Looks like I will get a shotgun mic instead. Thanks!
Thank you for this. I am currently exploring options.
Learned a ton here thanks !!
Thanks! This was very informative!
Amazing video. SO helpful! Thank you for making this! :-)
Great video, mate. Thank you :)
Great video !!
great video, thanks
That deserves much more views.
Nice video. Thank you!
Great Video!!
great video! thanks a lot!
Very useful stuff!
Wow.. nice video dude i am looking a type of videos like this cause i am new on content creation
Thank you,good video
Hi...That was a great informative video on different types of microphones and their usage patterns. I got my answers to all my doubts in my mind regarding mics. Thanks a lot.
Great to hear!
@@videomaker Can you help me a little bit in choosing a good microphone for my purpose ? I am confused regarding the various types of microphones like omni-directional, cardioid, condensor etc...
Actually I am a teacher and need to start my studio setup for recording my lecture videos where I would be standing infront of a digital whiteboard and explaining the things. I feel that I may not be comfortable with wireless lavalier mic set. Can you suggest a good condenser or shotgun microphone, whichever fits my purpose well as I will be moving 2 to 3 feet from one end of the digital board to other. I want to fix my mic a feet above my head exactly at the centre of the board. Please help me in this regard by suggesting atleast 3 choices with moderate to high budget with great voice clarity. Thank you.
Could you detail what post production adjustments were made to the introductory audio?
Thank you!
Johnny - They did a video awhile back on Aftereffects that showed you how to make their animation in the start of the videos. .
Very useful.
If you ever do a similar trial, could you have the background noise ON-OFF for each setup?
Had to ty to decide the best setup, for myself: lavalier on the chest seemed clearest. Behind the shirt-collar had too much bass-loss? The other mikes seemed to pickup too much background noise, and/ or intrude distractingly into the view.
The cardiodhand-held-off camera fully-maxed, but next time, could you up the volume when video-editing? I had to up the volume here on my headphones to check.
Very interesting comparison. In your opinion what mic is better when recording outdoor videos? Mainly to record my voice while being outdoor in the nature. Thanks.
This was a very useful video. Thank you!
I do a lot of interviews on location and I own a sennheiser g3 lavalier system. I have two things to solve: 1. I sometimes feel that my me2 lavalier catches up too much background noise, as it is an omnidirectional mic. 2. I get in trouble when i need to record audio from more than one person.
Would you recommend me to buy a shotgun mic, as the NTG2 or NTG3, or should i go for a second Lavalier system?
(By the way, i thought the background noise coming from the NTG3 would be less than the one recorded with the lavalier mic... but in this test I heard the opposite... are lavaliers better in that way?)
I understand your question is from a year ago, but hopefully I can help someone else with a similar question. Firstly, omnidirectional microphones generally have less noise. Also due to their placement, closer to the source, you can lower the gain which further reduces the background noise. All that being said, using a shotgun microphone is known to have a fuller sound and is generally preferred on-set.
How would you eliminate peaking, while maintaining a decent input level. Let's say I'm talking and laughing. The laughter peaks, and if you turn the input levels down, then the dialog is too low and you end up with noise when you raise it in post. Any way to use a limiter while recording?
Kind of a random question, but how did you do your animation in the beginning?
I actually liked the sound of the dynamic microphone the best. The shotgun held like a dynamic was the second best.
Very helpful! Thanks a lot. If i wanted to interview and record musicians singing and playing instruments, what would you recommend? I'm wondering if i should get two shotgun mics, one for the instrument and one for the vocals.
I would recommend playing with mic placement. What would work best, is what sounds best through the mics.
Hope this helps! Thanks for watching!
Does an omni directional mic pick up other peoples voices good if I sitt in the car with them or stand side by side or infront?
Bacana espero muito dessa parceria. Gosto muito do conteúdo do CZcams!
But what mic would work for when you have multiple people at a table talking at once? How good of a range do these Microphone's have in terms of multiple speakers?
awesome video, just got the irig mic lav, and not loving the sound on it. Think I am going to go shotgun
+Jay Broyer Good to hear! Thanks for watching
This was good 'raw' data to listen to, however I would have liked some commentary to help me understand what I was hearing. To my ear, the lavaliers didn't come close to the shotgun mics in clarity and were maxing out the levels. Was this because of poor placement or the levels wrong while recording? Not sure.
At the same time, the shotgun mics were picking up a good bit of the fan noise. Again, does this prove anything or is it just this particular setup and the levels? Help Pro guys
For studio recording voiceovers, would you ever use a professional lavalier mic, like the Contryman B6, instead of large mic (on a stand)? Or would a larger mic of descent quality always outperform a small professional lavalier, like the Countryman B6 or Sanken COS-11D?
+Michael Ma thank you for your comment. The results will differ greatly depending on the quality of either microphone. However, as a general rule, a dedicated mic on a stand, say a large diaphragm condenser, will sound better than a lav. This will be due for a couple or reasons. 1. you can get better placement. 2. you will be in a controlled environment.
One thing to keep in mind though, is what do with what you have, and make sure you know how to use it. Using better technique will get more out of any quality equipment. Once you have the proper use down, the quality will improve with the craftsmanship and design of that tool.
Thank you for watching!
Thanks for the response! It's good to hear a definitive answer from someone with hands on experience and knows their stuff. Yes, I agree. Maybe I should try with a better placement of the lav mic first before trying something else. It may make a bigger difference. Thanks again.
thanks.
Which would you recommend for zoom, video interviews and vlogs? How can these be connected to a PC?
a dynamic mic would be the cheapest way there. If you want to not see the mic, a lav is good and if you need to have rejection from behind the mic, choose a shotgun.
For my situation - professional storyteller forced to go virtual - this is the most helpful video on the entire internet! Thank you!!! Based on this, I'm inclined to choose either a small lavalier clipped in view or a shotgun just out of the frame. Three sets of questions: (1) With the boom mics, how much latitude did you have in moving forward and back or side to side? Could you move 12 inches from "center" without a distracting change in volume? 18 inches? (2) You mentioned adjusting the gain. Was this done via the wireless transmitter for the lavalier, or through a preamp? [I hope I have the correct terms.] (3) What light did you use? It was very well lit. [I wear glasses, which will be an issue.] Again, many thanks.
any direction we would give would be a starting point. use your ears and move the mics around till they sound the way you want them too. This will also help you feel what the changes do, to better educate yourself the next time you have to place a mic.
@@videomaker Thank you for your reply, but I guess I didn't make my question clear. I do not own any equipment at the moment. I intend to set up a space in my house where I can tell my stories to a camera. I'm looking for advice from an expert like you!
My preference is to be standing up, and not to have any microphones visible in the frame. So my choices are: 1) a boom mic just out of sight above my head, or 2) a lavalier. In deciding whether to buy a boom mic, I'm hoping you can tell me whether I must stay almost locked in my home position or whether I can move around slightly as I tell my story - leaning side to side, front to back, and gesturing. Maybe even taking a step. Roughly how far can I move without affecting the sound so much that it will be a distraction to my online audience?

Hi.thankyou for the video.. I take piano lessons on zoom . So which mic would be better for both my voice and piano for the student to hear.
I have a ipad. Please suggest.
a dynamic omni directional mic will be your best choice.
SO what MIC did you use at the VERY END of this video at the close of the piece?
sounds like the ntg3
I was wondering the same DUOTGU
3:36 looks veery bored hahah
The shotgun mics sounds great handheld.
Please don't interpret this as snarky, but your reply indicates that the takeaway from demo was to show that 1) handheld mics and lavaliers work best close up and 2) when you don't want the mic to show, use a shotgun mic. On a usefulness scale, that's about 2 out of 10.
If you're 4 feet away from the camera, what would create better sound quality: a lavalier, or a shotgun mic mounted to the camera? Thanks.
it depends on what you need the audio to do. a lav would offer less environment sound than a shotgun mounted on a camera.
1. My Giant Squid (50$) is way clearly and less noisy than the countryman
2. Why the hell would you test the lavalier from 2 feet away? for the price difference, you could easily purchase invisilavs
For video dialogue, the lavalier is far more practical.
basically, basically, basically
Leave him alone! 🙂
