- I recorded this for Lincoln Center's #HumanityInConcert series on Mother's Day, 2020. It's my pleasure to share with you this little song, written by Andrew Resnick and me, from our upcoming musical, THE GIVER, based on Lois Lowry's best-selling novel. I hope you enjoy it :)

As a lover of the book, I'm excited to see how music is incorporated into the musical, as "hearing beyond" was only something the Giver could do. I trust your creativity! Perhaps Jonas is hearing beyond without realizing it, who knows. Also, beautiful, beautiful song.

I just watched the Fiyero Time vlogs and I noticed that you talked about adapting The Giver as a musical and I literally screamed! How did I miss this??? The Giver is one of my all time favorite books and you are one of my all time favorite people!!

I was a part of The Giver musical while in the my city's youth opera in highschool... I didn't make the connection that you had a hand in making it... That's so cool! I remember being blown away at the time by how creative it was and how unique the sound was. *fangirls a lil*
Different version - ours is what’s called First Class production, aiming for broadway. Hasn’t come out yet!

Would love to learn more about your musical interpretation of the musical as I read it in Middle School years ago. Hopefully someday in the future we can talk about it. Oh, and a question, who would be singing this song in the show should it make the cut? Jonas?
When it was still in the show, Giver sang it to Jonas... you’ll be hearing more about our musical soon I promise!
It has been 2 weeks since I have first seen this video and I keep coming back to it! Cannot wait for this musical! But I have a question, if it is ok for me to ask. When would this song be set in the story? The tone made me feel like it could be Jonas thinking about what job he would be assigned, but the way you have written it like "more urgent than an urge" made me think it could also be after his training as the receiver starts and he is trying to make sense of his feelings.
Huh. I pictured The Giver was singing this to Jonas before he was going to leave, but your thoughts about it make sense too. Idk, the song can fit in a lot of places.

@@JonahPlattOfficial Would love it if you can share with us more about your interpretation of the story, in terms of character portrayals and how you picture the dystopian community that they live in. Oh, and if it ever makes it to the stage, how are you going to handle the fact that it starts in black and white and turns into color like in "The Wizard of Oz" in terms of lighting and set design?

It's in development. A make-or-break it deal that could succeed or just never happen. Let's wait and see.
I don't even know how a musical tells of THE GIVER. A movie adaptation was made and it did not even justify the book. 😕
