- Everyone loves the noise the London Underground Jubilee Line 1996 Stock trains make as they accelerate away from stations. So here it is with several trains at each of four stations! The video was filmed on Tuesday 18 February 2020.

When they accelerate it seems like there is no end to the top speed 😂
1992 TS trains have a higher acceleration rate.

@@5-Consecutive-Hairpin-Turns What I love about the 2009 TS trains is the design of the driver's cab front exterior, the side to side curvature, plus the windows on either side of the central door. However, I don't like the body sides and shell profile, imagine if the 2009 TS trains were designed with the exact same body profile and side windows which extend into the roof as on the 1992 TS, but with the 2009 TS drivers cab front, it would have been perfect.
By the way, I was born in July 1974, so I have a bias for Underground trains that were built before 1986, with unpainted aluminium bodies, and metal and wooden interiors. Unfortunately very little film footage exists of District Line R.49 Stock, but one car has survived into preservation at the Acton Depot Museum. I also loved the 1962 TS.

It's a piece of metal, and I love it XD.
I think the distinctive noise of the motors is extremely soothing to the ears, it's the best sounding and looking train ever to have run on the London Tube.
The northern line also uses this tube stock

@@bonzomcdrumcat4989 The stock is different, the 1996 stock is actually older than the 1995 stock and is probably more similar to the 1992 stock in terms of technology
Funny thing is 96 stock was finished before 95 stock
When I come back to London, I want to hear this noise.

So, you're 50% right. Something can be both a noise and a sound, but in this context, it's just a sound, since it isn't unpleasant.
Its not the trains making the noise, there is a chap employed by London Underground and he sits in a little room with a violin and its played over the tannoy. He was homeless and used to beg with his violin. Sadiq heard the sound and said "I know what we'll do"

It's weird that so many underground trains of different ages and different sounds exist.
Remember going on these with my mother back in the 90s. Love the sounds, love the sound of the doors and their unique fast motion and their wrap-around design. Going on these were a treat. Still one of my favourites.
This is one of the best trains on earth in my opinion

I love the jubilee sound when it accelerates and slows down, the sound is amazing. I could listen to it all day lol
The jubilee has a very distinct futuristic sound and it's why it's so cool but if you want a more traditional sound, visit a picadilly or central line.
Central line? That bursts your ears
The echoes at the huge Canary Wharf station makes it better :)
There's a video explaining why trains make these kinds of noises and it was the first time I ever heard this one. Now I'm addicted to the sound.

When I was 6 or 7 I went to London and I think it was one of my first times on a train, so now the 1996 stock is just cemented into my brain what a tube train should sound like

they have been my favorite londond underground train since i was a kid lol. and they sound amazing, if only the newer ones kept this sound lol
The jubilee line is my favorite on the London Underground.
The reason why it makes those sounds is because of its traction system. It uses GEC Alsthom GTO-VVVF.
They use the same motor that they use for the class 465 and 466, I think

Anybody from Vancouver, Canada will think this is very similar to the sound of the Skytrain. It's so much more pleasing than the avalanche of metal that comes barreling down the tracks here in NYC 😂😂😂
Those old original trains in Vancouver nearing 40 years old are sounding like an avalanche of metal when they come into a station. Some places the inside of the train was loud around 100 decibels. When they do start they sound like they have a three speed transmission.
That is the ALSTOM (name of manufacturer) sound. It is identical to the vast majority of RER trains in the Paris region. The RER (regional express network) is a bit like our Overground.

@@Simulation101YT Depends on year of manufacture. Metro Cammell ceased production 16 years ago. It was taken over by GEC Alsthom, then acquired by Alstom. So to answer your question, the motors were made in UK, but the company is now French.
Yes Alstom made the 96 stock, and the motor is a 90s alstom motor

There is something oddly satisfying with the Underground motors accelerating and also decelerating.... beautiful!
A lot of people may think the changes of sounds are of the train changing gear, which isn't true. So many train enthusiasts will tell you that it's because it uses motors from GEC Alsthom (the company who supplied the motors for this train) and mostly "GTO-VVVF inverters". The GTO is actually the name of the transistor/thyristor technology used, but not all sounds relate to the transistor technology. The sound you hear is caused by the VVVF drive pulsing out an artificial AC wave from a DC supply. And again, it's not the train changing gear, it's caused by a byproduct of how the software has been programmed. When we use pulse-width modulation with AC motors in 3-phase configurations, we require 2 sets of transistors for both positive and negative, and since we have 3 phases it means we need a total of 6 transistors. GTO thyristors (as our so called transistors) can only pulse at about 400 times a second. This means when we reach a certain speed, we need to cut out some pulses to stop the transistors being overloaded. And since the pulsing is what causes the sound, each time we remove pulses the sound goes back down. Then we have it; the distinctive sounds of the Jubilee line 1996 tube stock!

That noise is NOTHING to the ear splitting sounds you get inside the carriages along certain parts of the track. TFL should either issue warnings about unsafe decibel levels or issue earplugs.
Agree! I went from Westminster to Stanmore yesterday, absolutely deafening at times, and a really rough ride at some points. Still love the Jubilee though!

Why is it that two similar (largely identical) types of tube stock, those on the Northern and those on the Jubilee, have such vastly different noises?
Because the 1995 stock on the Northern line, has a different design spec
Northern Line trains get electricity from lines in a more efficient way than Jubilee line trains and can switch very large chunks of current very quickly without damaging the systems of the trains. That is why Northern Line stock does not make that whooping screaming noise when it starts, which Jubilee line stock does.
Malcolm Hartney The Northern and Jubilee have the same motors, just different VF drives. The top end noise of the 95 stock is identical to the 96 stock

Michael 1213 no. Some carriages such as the second to last are dead quiet.
Front and middle carriages and rear are motored. 4 out of 7 cars are motored

I was trying to find that hellish screeching and howling when the train is off in the tunnel, but I don't know what line it is that does that. This sound though I've always liked. It sounds like I'm warping off somewhere :]

The 1995 stock should be more powerful, it has only 6 cars and more motors.
But maybe the motors are strangely diffrent to the jubilee line motors?
I think a change of motor would be very expensive. I don't think that the Piccadilly trains got a new motor in mid 90s when they had a deep refurbishing, for example.

The London Victoria Line 2009 Stock. The jubilee line-you can hardly hear the train kn the inside. Like the S stock, except for the turns and when you get into Bow Road from the Upminster side on the district line its so loud

I have went on the Juiblee line from London Bridge to Wembley Park (stop :Westminster)
and heard the ‘’waaaa” sound which was good
