I'm sorry, although the sound of the choir was fantastic I must simply critic the execution of this peice. NO ENDING CONSONANTS when singing Negro spirituals. Way to much "T" on the end ot the word "great". Why the long ritards? Why any at all? Stacy gives you everything you need. This peice is all about building tension, just listen to the text " Mastas gonna kill ya' "lord don't you hear me" "I'm FIGHTING till my very last breathe" etc.. The syncopation and layering between parts keeps that tension and conviction in place. You nullify that effect with unnecessary breaks. Now, way on gods green Earth would a "step show" be necessary at the most pivotal point in the piece? Impressive, yes but you ruin the extremely well written syncopation and laying of the voices that builds into this ultimate show of expression with the unnecessary movement. This is a primary example of doing way tooooo much.

I thought the whole percussion part wasn't so bad but it definitely started to feel pretty rushed especially trying to hear the altos sing those sixteenth notes at that part. I'm assuming the pitches were too high for the sopranos to actually sing the words there. But I love the dynamic contrast.

I remember the score specifically having elided some of the words like "yellin'", "ver'", to reflect the African American diction, I think because they're used to enunciating the consonants (as is good habit for typical choral songs) that's why they did that here

No soul in this at all, too still. This song needs vibrato in all aspects. Straight tone the whole time for a song like this feels unnatural
