  • SORSE ILISH (HILSA IN MUSTARD SAUCE GRAVY)
    We Bengalis go mad over this fish, and we call it Ilish which is also known as Hilsa. Nobody in this world can understand a Bengali's love for Ilish.
    Today in this video we’ll make Sorse Ilish or HIlsa in Mustard Sauce Gravy. It's a very easy peasy recipe and the fish retains its flavor because of the very few ingredients are used to cook this delectable dish. Just mustard seeds paste, salt, turmeric and you're done.
    INGREDIENTS:
    1. Ilish (Hilsa Steaks): 4 pieces
    2. Mustard Seeds: 2 tbsp
    3. Coconut Milk: 1/3 cup
    4. Turmeric Powder: 1 tsp
    5. Salt to taste
    6. Nigella Seeds (Kalongi): 1 tsp
    7. Mustard Oil (preferable, you can use vegetable oil too): for cooking
    8. Green chilies: 4-5
    9. Cilantro (Coriander leaves): for garnishing
    METHOD:
    1. Wash the fish pieces and pat dry them with a paper towel.
    2. Soak the mustard seeds, poppy seeds and green chilis in warm water for 30 mins.
    3. Marinate the fish with salt and turmeric powder and keep it aside for 10-15 mins.
    4. Heat mustard oil in a pan and fry the fish pieces very lightly on both the sides. Don't over fry them.
    5. Make a paste with mustard seeds, poppy seeds, salt, turmeric powder and green chilies. Add water if required, the consistency of this mixture should not be too thin.
    6. Take the same pan and add some nigella seeds which is also known as kalongi and let them crackle. Now add the paste we just prepared. Let it simmer for 1-2 minutes.
    7. Add the coconut milk and then add the fish pieces and again cook for a minute.
    8. Add little bit of water if your gravy becomes thick. Coat the fish pieces nicely with the gravy and let it simmer for a minute.
    9. Enjoy Sorse Ilish with piping hot plain rice.
