Do you prefer rim or disc brakes? Let us know!

rim brakes for now because i don't have money to afford good carbon wheels so... good'ol lighweight alloy rims. honestly, i'm quite heavy (88kg) and the brakes are waaay enough. in all conditions and my bike is still just under 8kg. don't need more.

My hybrid has disks, my road bike has rims... I prefer rims on the flat in the dry, but prefer the disks downhill or in the wet... I also prefer maintenance on the rim brakes, mineral oil is horrible stuff.

In my case "baking" break pads helped. I've just place them on a stove and "fry" my breaking pads for couple of minutes. I started feeling burning smell on the beginning, it gone after 5 minutes. Another 5 minutes later I take them off the gas ring and let them cool. Now they work like brand new ones!

i have had good results applying finishline wet chain lube to my brake pads. however, i now need to buy a new helmet and two front teeth

I wouldn't recommend sanding the brake blocks AT ALL because the particles of sand will be embedded into the material and in turn score and destroy your brake track. Use a file instead.

edge23310 that’s a very good shout. I’ve never had an issue personally, but then I’ll always check the pads over after. Thanks for the pointer

to toe the pads, do it pointing the arrow towards the rear. the leading edge will clean the track before the pads engage completely. it will preserve the pads and tracks longer. far less metal pins stuck in the pads.
for disc brakes, use some brake spray for cars. it's a powerful degreaser. you have to kkep in mind that in wet weather, the discs are more sensitive to contaminents than rim brakes. when you ride in the rain in a group ride, the spray from the bikes in front of you will contaminate the discs and pads. so to do well, it's good to spray the shit out of them with that product after a wet ride. it will prevent you from using them contaminated on the next dry ride. this is where the problem gets worse.
so always clean well after a wet ride, you'll see a massive difference.

for disc brakes I only use a hard ceramic compound for the pads, most durable, least likley to contaminate from road grime and don't squeal even when wet.

for brake pads you kool stops, they are super strong and grip to the rim under wet surfaces and a light tap can throw you over your handle bars

Yeah I just had this, was replacing the brake fluid in my front brake, and managed to hose mineral oil all over the front pads / disk... Was squealing like a pig so fit a new disk and pads last night... Apparently the brake pads in a frying pan thing only works on metal pads, not resin pads...

I've blasted the disc and brake pads with cleaner for +10 years and never have had any issues? Using some cheap car's disc cleaner on my mtb. Perhaps the pad material is different?

Pienimusta yeah you’re probably ok, but it’s easier to suggest keeping clear of them full stop. We don’t always do as we say 😉
