      I agree! Great quality. I would only say your image thumbnails are letting you down a bit :( I think the font you use and the colour looks a little bit unprofessional? If I had judged the video on that alone, I may not have checked your videos? Maybe you might want to take a few ques from how other established CZcamsrs do their thumbnails and other editing/ filming decisions? But looking at this one, I can tell you do an amazing job! I was looking at this camera, because of the fact that is seemed like a good entry into the full frame mirrorless camera for what you get at the price you can get it. The points you brought out really helped solidify my decision. The things you mentioned as strengths of the camera, is where most of my shooting is done, so I really appreciate it.

    Nicely done. A7rii is showing it's age for UI, speed and features, but the sensor is still up with the top dogs for IQ at similar resolution. Like you, I'll be keeping and using mine for a long time yet (despite having newer models). Worth noting that It's really good for all sorts of micro and macro togging too. And as a platform for playing with adapted legacy (or weird) glass. Etc...

Because of the price deduction and the fact that I am a Flickr buff who can recognize a Sony product landscape shot among others, I am about to plunge into a new A7 R ii. Your tutorial made up my mind. Thank you. Currently shoot EMI MIII and a Fuji X T3 and really enjoy the results that I get but whenever I see really great landscapes on Flickr , nine times out of ten they are Sony created images.Thanks again 03-20-2021..

    Great video, adressing all your cons as a A7r2 user since two years:
    - The noise is a non issue. ISO 6400 is my personal limit too, but: You will always have the 42MP in good and bad lighting, and they are fanstastic for noise reduction because of all the detail/MP. Above 6400, you can first denoise then resize the RAWs to 24MP and they will outperform the A7, to 12MP and outperform the A7s.
    - True. Tip: When shooting video, and you have a static scene, consider going into crop mode because it downsamples 5K readout to 4K.
    - I love!! the fact that the battery is small. I usually travel with two batteries for a day (and you should) but I only have to lift less weigth with my hands at any time. i don't "carry" unnecessary weigth with my arms. That's why I prefer it over the R3.
    The rest is something I fully agree with. But keep in mind you are getting a 42MP, 4K capable backlit 5 axis stabilized Full-Frame sensor for under 1k. A no brainer

    • @MalcolmWalker
      @MalcolmWalker  Před 3 lety +8

      Very good information, and thank you for sharing. I was unaware that in crop it oversampled from 5K. I will defiantly do some testing with that. Yeah batteries don't bother me either. I have big hands and the battery grip is a huge benefit for me. Two batteries in the grip last me most of the day for photos.

    I lusted after this camera when I was still limited to my LUMIX GH2 and GX7. When the price of the A7 came down, I bit. Full frame at last! And I loved the shots I got with my vintage Minolta primes. Fantastic landscapes. But these were mounted on a tripod. Finally, the A7RII started to come down from its "flagship" status and I was able to buy one new for around $1800. What a difference in hand held image quality with the Minoltas! The life cycle of these cameras astonishes me. What was once the flagship becomes faded glory. The GH2 was once a highly sought after camera. It was revolutionary. Way back when it had a fully articulated screen and an incredibly bright viewfinder. No camera ticks all the boxes. But I'll be satisfied with the A7RII for a long time.

If I can add just two things I hate soooo much, I'd say the fact that when the (very limited) buffer is full, the camera is unusable, and the screen that dim a lot, when shooting 4K, making you in trouble for nailing exposition and framing... I just started to do paid work for realestate and I also sell prints of mostly landscapes. At $1300 new I grabbed a a7rII, I was a little hesitant due to its age, but I think it fits very well for my current needs. Considering I was using an old Canon T3i this is a HUGE upgrade for me. I was truly pushing that T3i to its limits and it managed to pump out some stunning photographs. Used Magic Lantern to greatly expand its capabilities over stock and streamline workflow. Though, my a7rII paired with my (just arrived) Sigma 14-24mm art lens should really expand my options and allow me to concentrate on the scene, not where I can place the tripod! Oh, real-estate jobs will take less time too!

When I resized the 42 MP raw to a 24 MP DNG RAW and it's waaays better than the A7ii. The A7Rii sensor is backlit (BSI) like the A7iii sensor whereas the A7ii is not.

      I agree the ISO low light is good compared to the A7ii. I suppose the majority of my work is done with long exposure that I don't use it for low light situations that need fast shutter speeds.

    Agree with you in all the pros and cons, except one, it does 1080p 120fps in NTSC or 100fps in PAL mode both at 50mbps using 4.01 firmware.
    Thanks for the praise about this awesome camera! I`d like to ask, can you make a video on sensor cleaning? Which products you use and how to make it securely.

    • @MalcolmWalker
      @MalcolmWalker  Před 3 lety +1

      Thank you and glad the video was helpful. But I just double checked on the 1080 @ 120fps. The camera originally did not do 1080 @120fps and was advertised at 720P for 120fps. I have 4.01 firmware installed and just did a sample shot. If you right click the data file for the video and look at properties and then click details you will see the width/height of the file is 1280 X 720. As much as I wish it was true with the 4.01 firmware it still shoots 720P @120fps. I have the video about sensor cleaning in my plans, so subscribe so you don't miss that one. Thanks and happy shooting!

    Good review!, I was looking at a A7Rii with a Zeiss Batis 75mm lens or a body only A7Riii, I am drawn towards the Zeiss lens magic, but I don't know if I can live with those ii limitations. I am coming from a a6000, have a nikon fifty nifty with adaptor, kit lens 16-50?, and lots of other cheap lenses, hence attracted towards the Zeiss, had one before and it produced magical photos, something about the colour.

    This is a great review. I have the a7s as my first full frame camera, several years before getting the a7r ii when I decided I wanted more resolution (Pixel cell phones are also 12mp, like a7s). I still have the a7s and plan to convert it to full spectrum, but it mostly sits unused. I was worried that hand held shooting would be difficult with the A7R II, as I'd heard horror stories about the A7R, but. IBIS makes it a breeze.
    I sometimes think about upgrading to the a7r III, but selling a camera is a bit of a hassle and then I'd have to get all new batteries and jettison the battery compatibility with the a7s. This and a few other videos I've seen comparing cameras across generations make me think the money would be better spent on a premium lens, as I currently use some nice legacy manual focus film lenses and the 28-70 OSS and a Rokinon 35/2.8 pancake.
    I will say that i think the a7s is a little more of a joy to shoot with. All metal, including the dials, unlike the A7R II, which has some plastic dials. The A7S is smaller and has greater manual focus magnification of 7x/14x vs 6x/12x for the A7R II. (why did Sony do this).

    • @MalcolmWalker
      @MalcolmWalker  Před 5 měsíci

      Thanks for the comment, I love hearing others experiences with the cameras. I too stuggled with the idea of changing battery systems but after having an A7iii and just buying two extra batteries and a wall charger, I am no longer bothered by it. I wish they all used the same as it makes it easier, but the chargers and still much smaller for the mk2s.
      Eventually I will retire my A7Rii and buy a newer camera to replace it, the new ones are very nice, but I still don't see the benefit in image quality. Features yes, but at the end of the day I am mostly landscape with it and it works very well. Plus I always like using older tech then current, so does my wallet.
      Ive never seen a mk1 camera and did not know about the materials they used. This is interesting to me and would like to see one now.

    a7r II for top quality without compromise,
    a6500 for speed, quality and lightweight,
    RX100 IV for super lightweight and environtments where you don't want to be recognized as a photographer, but still want quality

    Great video! I just bought myself the a7 IV and I plan to heavily use it for video production work (movies, commercial, music videos, etc) with it’s amazing features such as its s log cinetone capabilities. I just started recognizing the a7r II’s potential of being solely used for my photography (portrait, street, landscape, BTS photography, etc).
    Is it really that simple that the a7r II will take better pictures than the a7 IV due to its 42 megapixel sensor compared to the a7 IV’s 33 megapixel sensor? Or am I missing something seeing that the a7r II is a couple generations old?

    • @MalcolmWalker
      @MalcolmWalker  Před 2 lety

      It’s tough to say, I haven’t researched the a7iv at all, 33mp is pretty good and I think they made an amazing camera. The A7iii is so much more camera even without 42mp. But for photos the a7rii is still amazing. But it lacks in some modern features and auto focus compared to the new ones.

    • @MalcolmWalker
      @MalcolmWalker  Před rokem

      I personally have never used it purposely to take a photo. I have played with it and the problem I have with all the picture modes and panoramic is the camera only shoots them in JPEG. With todays post processing programs that automatically stitch photos into panoramas, it is better to just shoot RAW images of you pano and then have light room stitch it together. You get better detail and full control of the image with the edit. However it is nice still having these functions in camera for the simple fact of quickly sharing to social media. The camera easily connects to you smart phone for a transfer and you can then instantly upload them to the platform of your choice.
      As far as the Rii to A6400 debate goes. You cant go wrong with either one. Some things to keep in mind however.
      Do you already have Full Frame Lenses?
      Do you shoot active sports, fast moving, or rely heavily on autofocus? If so lean toward the A6400.
      If you shoot portrait, landscapes, night skies, or want maximum detail. Then the Rii is a better camera.
      In the hands the Rii is a "better camera" . Whereas the A6400 is an amazing tool that can handle everything the Rii can and do more, has way better autofocus and can shoot video a bit sharper with the 6k down scale to 4k. The Rii shoots full frame binned or 5k downscaled to 4k in super35 mode.
      Hope this helps and thanks for watching. I appreciate it!

    • @MalcolmWalker

      With aps-c lenses your pictures will
      Look the exact same. You will be shooting at 16Mp I think. The camera will default into aps-c mode. You can turn full frame on and you might get more visible frame that way with a heavy vignette. But it works with all emount glass until you can get a full frame lens. I would recommend the full frame nifty 50 that Sony has for around 200 bucks
