    The A7R II is my absolute favorite camera of all time. It has produced the best images I have ever taken in my photographic journey - which is long, dating back to 1975. I use this camera for stills only, no video whatsoever. I have tested the R3, the R4 and recently, the A74 and not one of them convinced me to "upgrade". The battery life issue was solved by adding a grip with 2 batteries. The ISO has never produced anything that can't be handled in post. I currently have and use this camera along with the A9II for fast moving stuff and I am covered - - perfectly. I was truly saddened when I heard Sony was discontinuing this camera - I will keep using it until it dies and when that happens, I will find a used copy and continue the journey.

    I just picked one these up used for $550. It has a high shutter count (previous owner was into timelapse photography), but I plan to use it with vintage lenses and for negative scanning so my owner shutter use should be relatively low. I am pretty excited by this camera

    Dude I started in photography with a DSLR Nikon d5500 back in 2018. Two years ago I switched to full frame with this model for the price and when I noticed it was a model from 2015, I was having my regrets, but then I started using it and man I was wrong. For being my first full frame camera it is an amazing camera. For photography is an amazing tool, for video does the job but this is a full dedicated photography camera. Nowadays is still a fine choice to start in full frame camera world. But the batteries and the ISO are the only things I don’t like it. Maybe in one year I will switch to a a7c, or maybe I will keep shooting with the a7r2. Great video dude

    We have had very similar experiences, down to the A6k going to the Rii with the 1.8, 50 mm. Still using it as I don’t think I’m at the skill level to upgrade just yet but man do I love this camera, rocking the Tamron 28-75 Gii and I absolutely love it.

    A7Rii is my first "forever body." I've used all sorts of kit over the last 20 years, and this is the first body that's a perfect snapshot in time. Not so advanced it feels like tech not a camera, not so unrefined that it can't perform. Not too big, not dainty. It's a goldilocks body for sure.
    I actually dig the exposure dial. I shoot street around NYC. So I use a Voigtlander or vintage prime, shoot aperture priority... Then set ISO to auto and ISO Auto Min SS to 1/250 or 1/500. Zone/range focus. So everything is set and I can just focus on story and composition. If exposure is at all off, then I just roll exposure compensation. It's marked externally, which isn't the case with a custom dial there. So extra helpful when I need to shoot in a moment and just check settings as I raise the camera to my eye.
    Anyway. Ramble ramble. Point is, I love this camera and I'll absolutely never sell it ha.

    I love my Sony a7rii and use it mainly for Milky Way photography… I think if I were to upgrade, a Sony a7r iiia would be good because the low light is better than any of the newer Alpha cameras currently on the market.

    Great video! I just bought a used A7rii (still waiting for it to arrive). Really wanted to get the A7riii, but decided to save some money and an additional lens down the line. Will be my first step into full frame on a personal level, something that has been a dream for me since I temporarily was working as a photographer back in 2015 and got to work with the Canon 5d Mkii provided by my workplace.
    But never got around to getting an ff camera myself. It is expensive when not doing it professionally. 😅

    Hey, I had the a7 ii for a very long time and have now upgraded to an a7 iii. Don't get me wrong, I love my a7 iii, but the only thing that bugs me is the 24 megapixels. In lowlight the camera is really great, however for larger print I would like more megapixels and as a second camera of course as cheap as possible. So the question is, would you recommend the a7r ii for the intended use, for portraits and such, where I need eye autofocus?

    • @josehnegrete
      @josehnegrete  Před rokem +3

      So here’s my opinion: 24 megapixels is MORE than enough for larger prints. The thing with larger prints is that you generally tend to view them from farther away, so details don’t matter as much. If you’ve ever gotten the chance to get close to billboards, you’ll notice they’re insanely blurry from closeup. Still, the a7Rii will solve your concern for more megapixels. Even though it doesn’t have eye-autofocus, the focusing is still amazing, and it generally hits the eye or surrounding area. I’ve shot 3.1m weddings with it and trust me it keeps up 👍🏼

    I find the camera nice and compact but the grip and density of the cameras weight was uncomfortable for me to handhold much I was using it only on a tripod did not like handholding for long until I bought the little Sony grip add on, it’s very small and just extends the very bottom right side only about to where the screen starts. I could not believe the difference in comfort this little add on made. It redistributes how and where the weight of the camera is in your palm. Definitely worth the purchase. Also gives extra room for your pinky finger.

    • @josehnegrete
      @josehnegrete  Před 4 měsíci

      The extra bottom space is SO NICE. I definitely didn’t think even a small piece of metal would help, but it definitely does add comfort.

    Planning to upgrade soon...the only thing holding me back to get the R2 is the battery...is itnreally that bad? In one full charge, how many photos can it take? Thanks!

    • @josehnegrete
      @josehnegrete  Před 11 měsíci

      I don't really know if I ever had a "how many photos it can take" metric. It just depends how long you leave it on. I made it a habit to ALWAYS turn off my camera if I wasn't about to take a photo. Over a wedding day of 12 hours, I would go through about 3 batteries maybe? Over a few thousand images.

    • @josehnegrete
      @josehnegrete  Před 11 měsíci

      And honestly sometimes less than that. The a7Rii batteries are definitely not like the newer Sony ones, but they can 100% still compete. They are also lighter and cheaper.

    So, I got one virtually new for $500. on ebay! OMFG!!! Has to be the biggest bargain in the used market today. The Sony a99II with the "obsolete" A mount has the same sensor and costs 4x as much! Now I'm trying to learn the flash system. Do you have any videos on that?

    • @josehnegrete
      @josehnegrete  Před 4 měsíci +1

      NICE!!!! And I can absolutely make a video on good flash techniques. In the meantime, my biggest recommendation is to use it in TTL mode, and point the flash up into the ceiling to get a more diffused and flattering look. In TTL mode, the flash should do the rest of the work for you. If the image is too dark, try adding some EV stops (+0.3EV, +0.7EV, etc). Video hopefully soon!

  • @smoejith9283
    @smoejith9283 Před 8 měsíci +1

    Why sell?? Don't you need a backup camera to the IV?? For battery life you really should look at the grips.. I have them on all of my work cameras for "pro" shoots or extended sessions.. even my aps-c 6400 I bought a 3rd party grip (sony sadly didn't make a factory model).. where did you get the skins?

    • @josehnegrete
      @josehnegrete  Před 8 měsíci

      The a7IV is fairly reliable, and even after 100+ weddings and over 200k+ shots, even the a7rii never failed me (which is good because at the time it was my only camera lol). Now I've got an FX3 as my "backup" that I also use to record Instagram reels with. In terms of battery grips, I always hated how much weight and space they add. Thankfully, with the a7IV, the battery lasts me almost a full wedding day, so no battery grip needed. Lastly, the skins were purchased from ALPHAGRVD!

    how did you manage the weddings without 2 SD cards?

    • @josehnegrete
      @josehnegrete  Před 4 měsíci

      So I've shot over 170 weddings at this point, and I've never had a single SD card error. My previous lead photographer/boss had been doing it for 15+ years, both on film and single-card slots and also never had an issue. While I still do recommend dual-card slots, it's the equivalent to driving without a seatbelt. If you have an issue, you're completely screwed; BUT, if you're careful, from disconnecting the cards properly, cycling them often, and using only the newest and most proven types, then you are less likely to fail.
      I still don't recommend or endorse shooting without two card slots, but I put over 200K+ images through that single camera alone and never had failure. Lucky, but I feel it doesn't happen as often as people make it out to be, especially with newer bodies and cards. I also always now shoot to two cards with my A7IV!

      My only suggestion is that it looks like it might have been an older RRS L-bracket that I bought with the camera, but I honestly can't remember. After doing some Googling, I would recommend the RRS new brackets for the closest comparison (though they're pricey atm!).

    100 weddings in 3 years with COVID, legendary 😂😂😂

    • @josehnegrete
      @josehnegrete  Před rokem +2

      Yep!!! The company I was with was doing VERY high-end weddings. It was crazy to see that rich people could still have 200-300+ guests in rooftop skyscrapers while everyone else had to wear masks :l guests would be “asked” to wear masks, but it was difficult to enforce rich people.
      I did hear about a wedding at a mansion with 600+ total people (guests and vendors). The couple got COVID tests for EVERYONE (back when COVID tests were hard to come by), and you had to test negative on the spot to get in.
