I really liked your video and I hope you feel at home in Malaga.
I live in Galicia, (on the other side of the country). As time passes, you will realize that Spain, despite being a relatively small country, is very diverse and rich in different customs, languages, landscapes, climate, etc ...
Anyway, welcome again and good luck!
P.D: Ah !! a suggestion: I think it would be nice if you don't use a Mexican hat when you refer to Spain in the header of your channel ...

Hi Melissa. You did a great job with this video. My wife and I are fellow Canadians, from the Fraser Valley in the Lower Mainland of BC. We are planning our first trip to Malaga and the Costa Del Sol and Costa de la Luz for the end of May and beginning of June of this year, for 3 weeks. I’m really wondering about accessibility to these other parts of this region in terms of best towns to stay, especially if renting a car and needing parking when doing so. Not sure if you or anyone has any recommendations or contacts on how to best manage this. We like to get out and explore but that usually means trying to find accessible accommodation locations that are convenient with a car. Thanks for any suggestions you may have.

Unfortunately we don’t have our Spanish drivers licenses so we have never driven in Spain. It is definitely the best way to explore though, since public transport is fairly limited outside the big cities. We’re doing a road trip to Gibraltar on Friday with some visitors on Friday so I guess we’ll find out about the parking situation. If I remember I’ll let you know how it goes. Thanks for watching and commenting! Enjoy your trip!

Hello - is there a boardwalk throughout the coastline for walking and cycling? Or what area/town may have that? Also, are there a lot of parks big and small, green spaces, and hiking trails nearby? And lastly, trying to figure out for warm coastal living but not too too small (love shopping and movies sometimes) what is more affordable, Spain, Italy, Portugal or France - now sure how to research that or know what is the best choice for retirement someday with a very limited budget from US. Great vlog!

    • @melissamorse8454
      @melissamorse8454  Před 2 lety

Hi Esther, yes there is a boardwalk. I’ve heard that people have cycled most of the way along the costa del sol along the beach, and Malaga has a nice walkway/bike paths along both beaches (east of centro and west of centro). There are many small parks, a few bigger parks, and we are very close to many mountain trails if you want to explore more nature. As far as affordability, housing prices are increasing lately but overall I think Southern Spain is still very affordable. Food is cheap. Rent is low compared to what I’m used to in Canada. Malaga has lots of shopping and entertainment. I’m probably biased but I think it’s a great place to settle, as long as you are prepared to learn Spanish and adjust to the culture shock. Good luck with your research!

I’ve never been to Portugal either so I can’t speak on that, but I have heard the same. Spanish in Andalucia is some of the hardest Spanish. They speak incredibly fast and don’t annunciate. A lot of slang. I’ve heard Portuguese people tend to speak English so it’s easier to get by in the beginning until you learn Portuguese, and speaking Spanish helps because it’s a similar language. I guess you’ll just have to visit to find out if you like it there!

The Visigoths took control of Malaga in the 5th century AD, followed by the Moors. The Moors greatly influenced the city, introducing new architectural styles, such as the famous Alcazaba Fortress and the Gibralfaro Castle. The city also became an important cultural centre, with scholars and poets flocking to Malaga.
Interesting how white folks leave out the Moors influence when talking about Spain.

Curious if you connected with any expat communities? If yes could you share their webpage or Facebook info? Totally agree with the quality of the video and thoughtful outline of key topics. We are schedule to visit Malaga in mid to late February if Covid doesn’t derail the trip. Thank you so much

Good question! There are a few good Facebook groups. My favorite is “Expats in Malaga City”. This group is very highly organized and no trolls or in-fighting which I appreciate. It’s focuses 100% on Malaga City content only. There is another “Expats in Malaga” which covers both Malaga city and Costa Del Sol. There are a few other similar expat groups but I don’t find them as helpful. Meetup.com is another resource for meeting people in Malaga. To meet friends I used Bumble BFF (a spin off of the dating app Bumble) and met lots of great people there.

Unfortunately I don’t have any first hand experience with schools or life for children in Malaga. I know there are British/international schools in the area and I’ve heard they are good. My suggestion is to join the Expats in Malaga City Facebook group, and do a search. There have been lots of threads regarding schools. Good luck with your decision!
