    WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
    The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
    The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
    We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

      @doug nut I once had a dream in which I was in a house with all the actors who ever played "the Doctor" in _Doctor Who_ - except they weren't just actors, they somehow _actually were different incarnations of the same Time Lord_ as well (it got complicated). I was the most recent of them and simultaneously feeling awesome that I'd been chosen to play the part and also remembering having _been_ the others. There were like 20 or more versions of the Doctor there - the house was so full we were having to sleep on the floor - I dunno who most of them were supposed to be but the first 5, from Hartnell to Davison, were quite recognisable (this was before the _Colin Baker_ era, let alone "New Who").
      Since the first five actors in my dream are *consistent with* the first five who actually starred in the show, that must mean it's real, right? According to Torrey, anyway.

    • @aneeshramaswamy6283
      @aneeshramaswamy6283 Před 4 lety

      First off, I want to state that I have no opposition to the practice of vaccines and agree with your position completely, but I do feel the general public kind of dismiss the cases of adverse reactions and pass them of a necessary sacrifice for a greater cause. I certainly don’t believe that statement and think it’s at all moral to dismiss someone’ suffering inflicted by a choice usually taken on someone else’s behalf. Besides the child, I can imagine it’s especially traumatic to parents who basically are a cause for the adverse reaction.
      That said, I do know there is a field called vaccine adversomics which studies the cases of adverse reactions and attempts to create protocols that reduce or identify adverse reactions. I feel that’s an appropriate reaction to vaccine adversities, especially since we have a consensus (valid and sound) that vaccines need to be prescribed are that consensus is often enforced or has social costs as a penalty.
      I’m curious to know how you and others in the medical community think of adverse reactions and adversomics , and whether you find that the rare few patients who suffer vaccine get appropriate responses from the medical community and the public. One thing which I heavily have trouble with is that people usually assume overwhelming benefit is a reason to excuse risks. That’s no reason to stop a practice but still I believe that the answer should not just be, “The benefits outweighs the risks” but the same with an addendum of “There’s work been done to reduce the risks”
      Perhaps my approach may be pragmatically difficult and add costs to vaccination procedures but research into new methodologies of vaccination that give a better predictor of risk and/or reduce the intensity of adverse reactions, even for that small number of people, is heavily warranted and is a social responsibility for us who introduce a consensus, yes that provides overwhelming benefits and takes away a large number of risks factors, but still introduces a new risk factor.

    When you sleep you go into REM sleep (rapid eye movement sleep). In REM sleep we dream. You only remember 1% of your dreams. Your brain needs to dream to repair itself. Dreams are not magical.
    Correction: We dream just before REM sleep in Stage 3. But Stage 4 (REM sleep) is the most important sleep. Without REM we don't function right.
    Correction: Not repair but rather nightly maintenance.

      Dreams actually start in stage 3 right before REM.

    • @PhazterMaze
      @PhazterMaze Před 5 lety

      Do you mean thay dreaming physically repairs the brain? Because that's not true.
      REM sleep is the only time when our brain is completely devoid of the anxiety-triggering molecule noradrenaline. At the same time, key emotional and memory-related structures of the brain are reactivated during REM sleep as we dream. This means that emotional memory reactivation is occurring in a brain free of a key stress chemical, which allows us to re-process upsetting memories in a safer, calmer environment. It also makes long-term memory possible.
      So I'd be alright if you were to say "emotionally repair" in a sense, but that's not entirely true either. Your brain might just end up reinforcing nonbeneficial thought patterns which is damaging.
      Sleep gives us rest that allows the reparation of organs and muscles.

    • @JohnMorris-ge6hq
      @JohnMorris-ge6hq Před 5 lety

      @@PhazterMaze That's not my opinion. It's the current hypothesis regarding dreams. If we don't get any REM sleep after two weeks we go insane. But I should not have said Repair. Poor analogy. Excuse me. Should have said nightly alignment and maintenance.
      If only my friends were this intelligent. Did you know this info already or did you check the web? Nothing wrong with checking the facts on the web. Most of my information is from memory however. For example: Western Rome finally collapsed in 476 A.D. And the Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantine Empire) was conquered by the Ottoman Turks in 1521 A.D. This is from memory. So the REM stuff is information read over the years. So I might get a few things wrong. But if I had to check the web ever time I had to speak to someone that would be stupid. As a little kid I was complaining about having to get “shots” and my mother told me about her mother's best friend. They were in their 20s, and diphtheria spread through their small Midwest town. Granny kept her kids safe at home, but her friend watched her three babies (all under age 5) die within one week.
    A month later, she threw herself off a railroad bridge and was crushed by a locomotive.
    As much as I loathed needles, I never complained about vaccinations again. Very few people can remember those days, but any 100-yr-old cemetery will have several tiny headstones with dates very close together. That's what childhood diseases do, and there were once millions of parents who would give their own lives for vaccines that might save their kids.

    I dreamed last night that it was 1982, and I was watching Kirstie Alley and Rosanna Arquette make passionate love to each other. Later that night, I had another dream where the two of them let me in on the festivities. No matter how badly (and I can't possibly describe how badly) I wanted that second one to be true, it wasn't.

    What's is this obsession with with proving evolution false. He had a dream and that proves god. Good, now for the questions: who, what, why when, where, how? Gives no defense and goes strait to evolution. Sigh.

      Oh come on. If you've been watching this series enough times you will have gathered by now that it is a standard tactic ( I mean that in the loosest sense ) of christopaths to go straight to the evolution issue whenever the blowtorch is put on them. It's a simple ( very simple! ) method of deflecting heat off their woefully inept and preposterous arguments for the existence of a fairy tale, nursery rhyme sky daddy, and his toilet paper rag of a little golden book. An earwigs dingleberry could muster a more cogent argument than these morally bankrupt post lobotomy bible bashing loony tunes!

    I had a dream the other day that someone put a massive scratch on my car, with colour and depth. When I woke up, I thought it was real and had to run down to my car to check. Having looked round my car for the deep scratch for 10 minutes, I had to conclude that it was only a dream. It was so real, and I was convinced that it was. Luckily my car was real and I could check it in the real world.

    It's also the most nonsensical idea.
