Yup- grew up with 15 Bean Soup- anything with rice, noodles, over mashed potatoes, any meat. Grew up hearing Hoover Stew a lot. Other names, hunter's stew, hobo stew and "mulligan stew" made with whatever you had. I was a dental assistant in the AF. toothpaste isn't really needed- just water (use salt, spit, or use baking soda and spit). I use dryer sheets in my RV closet for the fragrance. My local Dollar General has a $1 aisle- I get a good number of items from there.

My mother just passed away a couple of weeks ago. She was 93 and we talked a Great deal. I have her on video and on cassette talking about the Great depression. At one point there were 13 of them. I can't remember right now 13 or 17. Living in a very small house and she said a lot of times all they had to eat was gravy bread. That's one of her favorite stories. Thank you for the good advice. It Will help others.

Brown rice is much healthier. I add it to lots of meals including soups to extend the food value. I think we can learn so much from how people made due with very little during the depression. I often think of my grandmothers who survived the depression and the War when I am cooking up a creative meal with what I have in the pantry and in my tiny garden.

👍😁 My mom in the 50's made a sort of rice and raisin pudding. That we mighta put cinnamon and sugar on it, or some milk. Being of Finnish decent, we ate a lot, of fish stew, smelts, salt fish, was a snack. Potato soup, potato rolls, navy beans, or lima, and the ham hocks. Today you can't even get dog bones, without paying a arm and a leg. But there was, Good old food. And I never knew that we had little! 😊

My mom used to buy them when I was a child growing up she would cook then with black beans or green pees (dried). We used to have lovely markets when I was a child meat and fish markets and fruit markets. When I was a young woman married with children I would go two times a week to the vegetables and fruit market and sometimes the fish market, I loved them and everything was so fresh and lovely despite my youngest daughter who I had to accompany me before she started school, she would complain that we were going to that "messy place". It wasn't messy but to her eyes it was. I am the same when it comes to clothes I don't buy a lot of clothes I never have I wear my clothes until they wear out. Love you videos Lindy 💗from Staffordshire England

I never buy paper plates. I have some Corelle dinner plates, and they wipe off so well with a couple spritzes of water and soap in a spray bottle. Then I just rinse them off. A friend just gave me a bunch of rhubarb, so I made rhubarb syrup yesterday. You just boil 2# of rhubarb in 4 cups of water. When it is cooked through, strain the pulp. Then you add 1 3/4 c. sugar to the juice and boil it down some to make the syrup. I saved the pulp to add to smoothies. The syrup can be used with water to make a drink, or it is very good over waffles or pancakes. Another friend has a sour cherry tree that bears fruit that just gets eaten by the birds. I will pick a bunch to freeze to make desserts later.

Great content Lindy!!! Some people unfortunately are very wasteful..... They need to think of their environment and money spent. Even if they have money they should be concerned of the nonsense that fills our landfills and dumps.... I've actually had people say well it's not my headache I will not be around....sooooo selfish!!! Unfortunately we have gotten away from being frugal and careful.👍👍

I used to give my son, when he was around ten or so, a calculator when at the grocery store. His job was to figure smaller boxes or volumes of an item to a larger box to see which was cheaper. I could do this in my head, but I wanted him to get in the habit of noticing things like should you buy the six count or the 12 count. People are conditioned to think always buying in volume saves you money. Not always. Milk. Every time the half gallons are on sale I usually buy them. They usually are cheaper than the gallon. But I see people reaching for the gallon instead (and they are not just the younger folks either).

This is my favorite I would have my mom make this for my birthday every year.
    HAMBURGER RICE HOTDISH
    1 lb hamburger ; lean
3/4 cup celery ; chopped (if you like)
    1 onion ; chopped
    2 cup rice ; raw
    1 can mushroom soup
    2 cups water
    1/3 cup soy sauce
... I usually put it on a little bit more soy sauce while serving.
    INSTRUCTIONS
Brown hamburger with chopped celery and onion; cook until celery and onion are tender
Put 2 cups raw rice in bottom of 9x9 baking dish
Mix 1 can mushroom soup, 2 cups water & 1/3 cup soy sauce with the hamburger mix
    Pour over rice
Bake one hour at 300 degrees. You can't put it in the Crock-Pot as well.

Yes it is amazing what we THINK we need verses what we need.As a retired Nursing Assistant a client I use to have said next month when she gets her check she’ll get a mop and a few other things. When you’re working when times were easier people would save and get things they not only needed but wanted…….a few years ago. Boy have times changed. But like those packages of bread if a person thinks about it we can stretch our food and necessities and make them go further.

I grow lavender and rosemary. I take a few sprigs and rub on my arms neck face to keep mosquitoes off. Can also buy a citronella plant and do the same.

If you have a big pot for soup, you can keep it going for many days by adding a few fresh ingredients each day
along with more water and seasoning. Keep it in the fridge overnights and it can last you for weeks.
