    Great job on the video. Couldn't understand Ocean Signals Manual but this did the job!

    Remember you have to hold the MOB1 right against your computer monitor for it to work. Great job showing the steps involved and the green lights when it does program correctly versus the red lights when it doesn't program correctly. If it doesn't show any flashing lights after the programming sequence, then it never really attempted the actual programming operation.

      Also, if you have trouble on google chrome (like I did), try doing it on your phone! For some reason, the faster refresh rate makes it more reliable.

    Excellent video. i had difficulty programming. i switched from older laptops and used the app on my cell phone. i turned screen brightness to maximum. I oriented the MOB so the hole (aperture) was in the center of the rectangle. i put a towel over my hand and phone to minimize glare. Second try worked (green flashing when done).

    Great instruction thank you. I don't understand why we have to put the ships MMSI number in the MOB 1 since it already has it's own MMSI and will trigger the ais alarm on my ship anyway won't it? I just need to fully understand why. I see you have answered this earlier but if I do not put my ships MMSI number in the MOB 1, what won't work ? What will I have lost ? Thank you so much !

      If you don't program MMSI, it will not provide DSC individual call, only AIS MOB (might not be supported by all potters); that's my understanding. It's an extra noise for the crew and therefore increaces the chance of getting attention on the own boat.

    When the website program asks for the GROUP MMSI number, is that where I enter the vessels MMSI number? ie. Group MMSI = Vessel MMSI?

  • @en8581

    Thanks! Sorry if this is a dumb question but would not the DSC distress call go out to all boats, ie DSC capable VHF radios in VHF range? I am trying to understand what is the point of registering your own boat’s MMSI number since if I am single handing (or even not) and fall overboard I would want the DSC to go out to all boats. Please help clarify this. Thanks!

      Hi EN , sorry for late reply - we are cruising some remote areas in Nova Scotia. The Mob 1 AIS , when activated , will: 1. send out a DSC through your DSC cable VHF radio - all vessel within range will get your DSC. 2. The MOB1 will also broadcast a AIS signal, that can be seen on chart plotters. THis is good, for the crew onboard to find you. BUT as you are single handing, then I don’t think the MOB 1 is the right device for you. YOU NEED A PLB, which will alert the rescue services and broadcast your position to them. Even better would be too have both devises . I have so far not been able to find a devise that does both AIS & PLB .

      @@Saga47swanSailing I've been shown such a device by a chandler. But it was noticeably heavier and bulkier than the AIS only or PLB devices, so I didn't buy it.

    When you do the AIS test will you also show up on other boats plotters? Should you do a SecuritE call announcing that an MOB AIS test is in progress? I would like to see it show up on a chart plotter.

    • @Saga47swanSailing
      @Saga47swanSailing  Před 2 lety

      Hi Nicholas, good question - I think it will show , but it will only be an ais signal with no DSC .

    • @OS_Umbrella
      @OS_Umbrella Před rokem

      It should show up on all boats nearby I think, this summer our AIS alarm indicated an MOB test. It makes sense to make an announcement upfront.
