    This 1955 Buick Special hasn't moved under its own power since 1968! This week, Tony Angelo and the Stay Tuned crew hammer down on this old boat anchor and build a custom 4 link, custom exhaust, and a bunch of other things in hopes of getting it down the road. Will this old iron hit the streets again after 56 years? STAY TUNED!

    Rule of thumb on thread engagement is 1.5 times the bolt diameter. 1/2" bolt would have 3/4" of thread engagement, minimum. 5 threads is likely good on smaller bolts, but if you imagine 5 threads on a 1.5" bolt, for instance, you'll see that it's barely engaged. It's a pretty good rule. Loving the show!

    • @hydrocarbon8272
      @hydrocarbon8272 Před 25 dny +2

      However if you do the math, the first 3 threads carry the vast majority of the load. It's because there's less bolt stretch down the line. The reality is that 3 threads of those bolts would hold up the entire car.

    • @wjpreslar
      @wjpreslar Před 25 dny +1

      If that rule of thumb were completely accurate, then lug nuts would be much longer than most are. If you are looking for a better safe than sorry approach, then sure, but there is a reason engineers don't specify couplers over nuts. The 3 full threads of engagement rule of thumb is mathematically better.... And cleaner.

    Finally watching Saturday morning, but for the best reason. I was packing up my existing garage so it can be demo'd this week in preparation for construction of my dream garage.

    Just realized it looks alarmingly similar to the Buick Finn and freiburger sort of swapped onto a c3 corvette chassis. Damn I miss free motor trend but this is way better.

    First time watching the show. Really enjoyed it. I love the realism of it. Not a million dollar facility. Not every high dollar tool from the sponsored tool truck. And love seeing y’all using a mig welder, not making unrealistic tig weld art the most DIY’s just can’t relate to.

    Just did an LS swap in a ‘56 Oldsmobile that sat for 48 years. Laughed so hard at the throttle wire through the firewall. I did the exact same thing to drive it the first time.

    You joked about Buick building tanks during the war, but Buick did indeed design and build the M18 Hellcat tank destroyer. It used a fairly revolutionary fluid coupling drive that worked so well that after the war, Buick adapted it to automotive use, becoming the (in)famous Dynaflow
