Rumors say the Igglybuff that defeated Red then went on to explore the Sinjoh Ruins and later the world, forming a guild of its own with a Chatot it met while chasing after apples and adventures.
Personal thought, but it's possible rock types are able to hurt ghosts due to a lot of superstitions about them involve using salt to repel spirits. So, rocks can hurt ghosts due to the minerals *in* rocks.
What about the Smelling Salts normal move then ? (I know, it's not table salt)
@@InsanityForce obviously mineral covered hands!
@@InsanityForce It's not even salt, it just looks like it
@@ryomaanime4563 I know, I googled it before writing the comment. Still wrote the comment.
Crystals too. Not just salt, crystals in general. Just ask half the internet lll
My theory for why normal type energy doesn't affect ghosts is because it's the basic energy of all living things. It represents a Pokemon's vitality, and is intrinsically tied to the pokemon itself, a mortal being.
With elements like Flying, Ground, Rock, etc, it's tapping into energy that goes far beyond the mortal coil. It's tapping into the energy of the world, something far more permanent and lasting that one mortal. It's primordial. When a pokemon taps into rock energy, it's tapping into the innate power of a concept billions of years old, and it's a form of stability and order that is far more lasting than any single living being could hope to match.
Rock type energy isn't just solid. Its a representation of solidity itself.
You’re either a theoretical genius or you’re way too damn high.
@@Dark-Aclyss nah, I just read some good Pokemon fanfiction.
So you’re saying rock is an element? Or like a… type?
Mortal beings are made up of the same primordial material though
Your theory helps explain why every pokemon learns normal moves but still doesn't explain the mismatch interaction between fighting and ghost seeing as some fighting moves use energy and some are just punches/kicks
I've had so much fun with the baby series.
I did a team run of Crystal using only babies last year, so some of these problems you've come up against, I experienced firsthand, but others are brand new to me, because I had more type diversity.
I'm actually really looking forward to the Pichu video, because I set that as my starter. It was an awful early game.
Had? It's not over yet ;P
I actually appreciate the clarification on the Defense Curl+Roll Out combo, I always used to wonder if you needed to reuse Defense Curl after Roll Out ends to get the boost again, now I know better, thanks Scott. 👍
Yes Jigglypuff is my favorite Pokemon since 1999 so I'm happy to see Igglybuff. Even if the line sucks sadly. At least we got Scream Tail which is cute and strong
Besides what other people said, that salt was used to repel spirits, a lot of japanese spirits in myths were sealed in rocks, so that's that. In fact, a lot of spirits were sealed in a lot of physical things, like swords, buildings, caves, etc.
I think when developing gen 1 gamefreak were approaching pokemon much more like a traditional jrpg and that the normal type exists to represent melee attacks while the other types, regardless of which attacking stat they pull from, represent more magical or specialized skills. Like, normal type moves would be the equivalent of just clicking the basic attack button in a typical rpg, while the other types are the equivalent of choosing a skill or spell option. I think this speaks to why normal types specifically specifically can't hit ghosts, and also speaks to the singular special stat in gen 1, with magic being a stat that is similarly both offensive and defensive in some rpgs. I think that this also speaks to why so many pokemon, regardless of their type, were stuck with almost exclusively normal type moves in gen 1.
The fighting type is obviously a sort of oddball in this theory, but was also pretty clearly half baked in gen 1 so that could be why lol. But it sort of functions like an upgrade melee class over normal types, also trading that off for more weaknesses, like a black belt to a monk in ff3.
Anyway yeah tl;dr that is my longwinded answer to why I think normal types in particular don't effect ghosts.
New to the channel, but this baby series has been my favorite. It’s really cool to have a unique smaller ranking system within your larger tier list. Keep up the great work!
Welcome to the channel! Scott is awesome and gives a pretty good variety of videos.
If you want some good vids to get caught up I’d recommend:
1) his Smeargal community race. It’s great and quite interesting
2) his venomoth type randomizor. Explains a lot of the inside jokes and shows a lot of cool things he can do with his tech.
3) his parasect race.
4) any of his recent yellow races.
His display is second to none and the level of insight he gives is really interesting. I’d never heard of damage rounding thresholds until him and his strategies/stat calculations are neat.
Keep it up Scott!
Igglybuff's results were surprisingly good, I guess that why it's smiles in the thumbnail. 😊
I guess that once you don't high expectations from these kind of runs ,the rng dies it's way, or in another words your experience with Cleffa gave Iggybuff some great results.😊 Keep it up!
I really like the Jigglypuff line, interesting to see how Igglybuff's slow start really held it back. I think if it started off with Dizzy Punch it would've performed faster.
Ehhh, would still need that big fat train for red!
@@tsawy6 Purely for the slow start. Actually having an attack move would've made the early game easier especially since having that move would mean Scott Wouldn't need to pick up Headbutt in the forest saving a little bit of time. Otherwise as demonstrated in the video itself, it had other hurdles due to its move pool and lackluster stats. The fact it starts off with 3 whole moves to burn through does not help it much in the slightest. Otherwise, the only egg move that could've made some parts a bit easier would be Faint Attack to deal with the early rock types, Gastly, Haunter, Morty, and that's about it.
@ScottE-2 yeah, but i think overall it's a difference of less than 10 minutes
@@tsawy6 10 minutes saved is 10 minutes saved. However, the issue remains that there isn't any way even with more move options would it get better with its poor stats. However, it is an utter crime that Dizzy Punch was such a limited move to be distributed. Only Kangaskhan gets it. Hitmonchan didn't get Dizzy Punch until gen 7! And gone entirely by gen 8. I think it would've functioned better as a fighting type move or at the very least a tutor move. It ain't right.
I think all attacks are infused with some kind of energy (?) based on the type except for normal / fighting attacks, which is why normal can't hit ghosts, but something like rock can
The power of Rock!
@@marcoasturias8520Lol yeah I suppose 😂. I feel like anything that doesn't do special damage shouldn't count. Of course this breaks down in gen 4 as certain things started as physical or special and switched over. Like bite for example.
I always figured that rock and ground could hurt ghosts because they're like, natural earth inspired. Sort of like in some lore, ghosts can pass through human made structures, but not the ground or natural structures like mountains or caves. Normal attacks or fighting attacks don't harm them, but earthquakes or falling rocks can.
What we consider ghosts in real life are electromagnetic phenomena. Closer to Rotom than Gastly. Rocks may contain minerals that disrupt that flow, I suppose?
Either way, there are also abilities like Scrappy that allow physical hits to hit ghost types. Which contains its own entire set of implications. It could be that the rock splinters and disrupts the ghost's physical form, which is the only thing keeping it corporeal enough to use things like Shadow Punch, and that "negative emotions" disrupt this physical form more than anything else, which is why a punch doesn't work, but a bite does.
The way you described the Electrodes part at 16:40 reminded me of JonTron’s reaction to _Germ Killer_ in his Plug ‘n Play Consoles video 😆
I kept having a strange back of the mind thought that Igglybuff "should" have the elemental punches even though it definitely does not get them. Then I realized I was thinking of the picknicker gauntlet in Crystal Kaizo, at Lake of Rage, which includes a lv99 Iggly with all the punches plus Body Slam. So that explains it.
Great video, I love your commitment to being better at the game and doing the best results with each Pokémon!!! This is an intriguing series!!! Keep up the great work.
26:46 masive damage survived.
Also, supernatualy created rocks can hit supernatural ghosts.
I think rock type works on ghost, because salt(A mineral) is believed to have anti-curse/-spell/magical creature properties.
I did my first ever solo playthrough in Fire Red with Jigglypuff lately and it also needed lvl 95 to finish the game (and I had to resort to Double Team with Resto Chesto strats, otherwise it would need a even higher level). Also thanks for the Defense Curl + Rollout info! I always thought you have to use Defense Curl again if Rollout misses or something
I love the way you approach things so scientifically, Scott. I think its really cool that you try to objectively rank Pokemon like this, and you do a great job. Just make sure you take a bit of a break from such atrocious Pokemon as these! I can only imagine that it gets tiring after going through this many baby Pokemon.
11:43 My theory; Rock was originally an extension of the Ground type and earth is one of the types of elemental magic from Pokemon's JRPG roots, the others being covered by Special types with Grass being an awkward way to patch up the obviously physical Rock and Ground. In a way Rock is a magic type and therefore should hit ghosts. Admittedly, this theory does come out of the correlation of Pokemon that could learn most of the special TMs with Pokemon that could learn Earthquake as a TM.
I feel bad for Igglybuff, it was clearly made to cash in on Jigglypuffs rampant success as an iconic pokemon due to the anime in that cutesy plushie way. Pokemon that are that or are trying to be the next Pikachu cashgrab attempt each gen tend to live a pained existence overall especially in their own generation.
31:32 This suspicous Igglybuff was a Cleffa in disguise after all.
The ghost rock interaction could be a reference to taoists sealing spirits into rocks.
😮💨 thank you btw. I watch these multiple times (2x speed). Data is nice for my brain
"defeat Dennis in the lighthouse"
good to know u did not forget the all important Dennis hack (for the uninitiated, this is where u fight Dennis and this tricks the game into awarding u a small amount of experience points)
im replaying crystal right now, and my mystery egg from oak was a shiny igglybuff, the first shiny ive ever hatched despite countless hours trying in gen 4 when i was a kid
was pretty happy when it came out of the egg lole
Would tracking total EXP at finish be a more objective metric than level at finish to really illustrate the growth rate differences? Im loving the baby series scott great content as always
Only just noticed the premade names on the selection screen. It's a cool way to casually reference the people that make your videos what they are. How long have they been part of your rom? And if you don't mind me asking, who is Waielal (regarding their role in your videos)?
on the reset counter vs blackout counter. I am more interested in intentional blackouts vs actual loses/resets. Like I know in Red/Blue lots of pokemon grind on the 'lightyears' trainer in Brocks gym and in your case in this video you grinding against the E4.
I think you should see how much dizzy punch could help the baby’s early game since they hatch with that where you normally get them in Crystal
Love this channel so much -- and very hyped for the even extra content coming in December
You know... I agree in general about the rock/ghost interactions. Though I could see something like silver punch hurting a ghost (operating on the silver hurting spirits/fae ect)
Silver is a metal, however, wouldn't that fall closer to steel, then?
Yea… idk what you were thinking with the babies in November Scott. You’re a legend for doing it, but man that was a brutal schedule you set yourself up for. 😬 I hope you’re doing alright with it!
My theory for Ghosts is that they are immune to Normal (and Normal are immune to them) because Ghosts are able to go through the natural world as we know it, including the Pokémon themselves.
However, the Pokémon MOVES by themselves are not exactly "natural", they are a different thing. The water a Blastoise releases from his cannons is something else - supernatural, magical, whatever you want to call it. He doesn't need to drink water to use any Water moves. Similarly, even Rock and Ground moves don't need the actual physical material in front of them to be manipulated: the Pokémon just summons a rock and uses Rock Slide in the middle of a gym. A Pokémon, as far as I know, wouldn't need actual mud in front of them to use Mud-Slap, for example, and so on.
So throwing a common rock on a Ghost would be ineffective , just like punching them or anything. Normal and Fighting moves are usually done with the Pokémon own body, and thus they don't work. Granted, there are a few exceptions, like the special-based Normal/Fighting moves like Hyper Beam and Vacuum Wave, but back in the day, these weren't really the main idea behind the immunity, I assume.
This series and it's release schedule have been amazing
Just like Cleffa, Igglybuff has _never_ been able to learn Thunderbolt, Thunder, Ice Beam, or Blizzard. It's still like this in gen 9. I still don't know why they singled out the fire type moves for the pink pre-evolutions to be capable of learning.
Theory as to why Rock Type moves hit ghosts:
The Rock Type is also a stand in for Minerals, for example Power Gem is Rock Type but for sure not your run of the mill pebbles. Also Carbink is covered in Gems.
So why does this matter? Well in a lot of media a lot of ghosts are trapped in some kind of magical gems and jewels. Also if Supernatural is to be believed you can just pour a circle of salt around you and you are safe from ghost attacks, and salt ist also a mineral.
Also to code which Rock would be able to hit a ghost and which isn't would be a pain in the rare side :D
Scott, "Am I going to have to go so the way to 100?"
Me, "Double Team. Double Team. Double Team."
I think Igglybuff still has some potential. It has high HP in exchange for Cleffa's defenses and it actually has higher attack with the special attack and speed being similar. If there could be a way to defeat Red at a lower level, then I could see it potentially beating out Cleffa, though it would start at a disadvantage with it having to struggle train early on. I'd love to see some baby races happen in the future
Salt is basically rock. Salt is used to ward off evil spirits.
Maybe that's why huge salt boulders sliding down onto a ghost works?
I would implement the Reset/Blackout counter by having it set as a fraction within the resets box. Resets on top, Blackouts on bottom. Have Resets include any time you actually reset the game, while blackouts count any time you are/would be sent back to Nurse Joy, that way you can show off properly how much you have to reset to RNG alone vs the pokemon just being weak
High Resets with a comparatively low Blackout would mean the pokemon is theoretically strong but highly inconsistent for example, while low resets but high blackouts means that the pokemon is consistent but just doesn’t have the tools to make use of that, either lacking moves or stats or the like
Good grief, it's rare to see you have to level up a Pokémon so much to defeat Red. Guess there isn't much to expect from a baby balloon. =P
This one's just going to be painful... No attacking move until Level 9, compounded with a genuinely mediocre move pool and godawful bases... Incoming 4 hour plus run! (Okay, it probably won't be THAT bad, but this is an incoming Bruno Tier for sure!)
(... Shouldn't it be Pryce Tier in this game? Bruno is an actual trainer in GSC...)
EDIT: Dang man! Iggly surprised me here! It actually did MUCH better than I thought! I'm surprised it wound up where it did!
My theory on ghost typing: Natural forces are neutral because they are inanimate with no life force. This would cover fire, water, ice, rock, ect. They can effect the stability of the matter (air) around the energy field that makes up the ghost's form. But a ghost cannot be hurt by a punch because its direct contact with a living creature. Ghost are the residual life force of another creature. Since the living creature has a life force that is bound to matter, they cannot mix and it cancels out. Ghost are powerful against psychics because they can show a mind reader what it feels like to die, which would be horrible and distracting during a fight. They are weak to dark type because it represents the dark void that awaits when they are finally put to rest and they are already halfway there. And they are strong against other ghost because they are a pure energy force, and when two forces of the same type of energy come into contact they combine together, magnifying the power available to both ghost.
As far as Rock Vs Ghost goes, IIRC speaking canonical lore, all Pokemon Type moves are using something called infinity energy. This while “both rocks and punches should pass through ghost” makes sense, in universe is more just that Ghost Infinity Energy just so happens to be immune to Normal and Fighting Infinity Energy. Because… the god lama said so.🤷♂️
I remember during Gen1 when I was going through Pokemon Tower in Lavender Town, I was doing super-effective damage to the ghosts via Sandshrew's Dig. I honestly thought I was digging up their grave sites is why it was effective, and not the secondary poison typing.
Again... perhaps I would've liked to keep sing. Sing + nightmare could be used to potentially luck-solve some of those battles. lvl 95 is really rough.
I find it strange and slightly humorous that igglybuff's def and sp def are the same after th asymmetric badgeboost.
Igglybuff is slow, but steady. There wasn't any point really where it just sucked, or any point where it absolutely dominated. It just stood course. Great movepool. Great runs, too.
love these videos man, so chill
Normal people can't do anything against ghosts is such an absolute savage comment.
12:06 perhaps the rock types are hitting the ghosts with precious gems. The gems might have a special something that effects ghosts.
Unfortunate starting moveset, though it's midgame was quite solid. Suboptimal stat distribution slowed it down too, especially the Red fight. I've really enjoyed the baby Pokemon series and am looking forward to the grand finale tomorrow!
my headcanon is that rock attacks work on ghosts because of tombstones. don't ask me how that works, just trust that it does
To be honest, I figured Igglybuff would be about the same as Cleffa so the differences especially in level surprised me. No attacking moves right away doesn't help of course.
Hey Scott I'm wondering: For things like the official artwork on the overlay do you just have the program access a directory with all of the images in them or do you use something like the PokéApi to scrape the images at run time.
I'd like to know why sometimes certain Pokémon don't show up on the overlay.
Jigglypuff is a drag to train, so I'd imagine this isn't gonna go super well. The babies have been doing an okay job thus far, though, so I think it could do okay. I'm not super confident in it though lol
Also, I just thought of something. For some early Pokemon who rely on burning through non damaging moves to use Struggle, could it be beneficial (or legal as per your rules) to avoid mandatory healing points by depositing your starter and then retrieving them afterwards if there's a PC handy? If there aren't any battles taking place during this window, you're technically not using your other Pokemon for battle, and your starter isn't being knocked out so it wouldn't cause a reset from that. Since moves like Dig and Teleport are allowed to be used outside of battle from your non-starter while not being an HM (and presumably Softboiled too), using the presence of them to explore the overworld and avoid your starter being auto healed might not be cheating either. Possibly not in the spirit of solo running lol, but just something that came to me.
One thing I would like to see, if possible, is...well, you did add an "Accuracy" stat box below Item for your Pokémon, but there's no equivalent for the foe on the right, when the regular stats do have their stat modifiers noted.
I'd like to see Accuracy noted on the right, for each time you use Mud-Slap (or, Arceus forbid, Sand-Attack) on the foe.
I never played Igglybuff as a kid, so I never would have guessed that it's relatively tanky lol.
I am absolutely mindblown that tyrogue and igglybuff have the same stat total.. I guess I thought he’d be stronger cuz he’s a little fighting dude but as a baby Pokémon it makes sense. Huh
Ghost. Rock. Tombstones.
Why does the reset counter move from 3 to 4 when battling Pryce for the first time? Did I miss something?
Normal and Fighting lack elemental power. Earth-based moves from Ground, Rock, and Steel types are elemental, so they can affect spirits. I think it would definitely make more sense for Ghost types to be immune to contact moves as a category rather than Normal and Fighting as types.
Poison can affect Ghost types, though not very well, because Poison is in essence an 'element' for these purposes. Flying is obviously the Wind element, even when it's physical in nature it's imbued with the power of the Wind.
Earth - Ground/Rock/Steel
Wind - Flying
Water - Water/Ice
Energy - Fire/Electric
Nature/Life - Grass/Bug
Magic - Dragon/Psychic/Fairy
Death/Void - Poison/Ghost/Dark
Normal and Fighting are thus the outliers. And Fighting could be argued to be elemental in a sense, but not able to hit Ghosts for other reasons. Normal is colorless, the default power of any creature.
You're so good at these games, especially compared to ye olden days.
I agree on the point about ghosts and physical moves! To make it a little more balanced; at the expense of being a tad more complex; I think ghosts should be immune to all physical moves unless they would otherwise be super effective. For example a trevenant would get hit by a wing attack because it would be weak to flying, but a gengar would be immune to it
Anyone reading this; how do you feel about that system? I'm genuinely curious~ Imo ghosts are awesome so I dont mind them being a tad overpowered hehe
Ghosts are already overpowered because of their amazing neutral coverage. Making them this good defensively would make them totally gamebreaking, unfortunately.
It makes sense, but yeah, they'd be overpowered af. I think it's fine as is defensively, if a bit goofy at times.
Thing is, that too op, not just for competitive, in playthrough it'd ve getting a ghost mon and just win the game. That needs some more balancing.
@@marcoasturias8520 In existing games for sure, but I do think a hypothetical romhacker could balance a game around it. For example; foresight and odor sleuth would become massively more important, they could increase the distribution of scrappy, they could make sure physical offense focused oppodents have a variety of type coverage to hit most of the ghosts available in their game. I think a foresight-style move that works more like focus energy so it persists until the user switches out would be a good addition too. Maybe give all of those ghost detection moves secondary effects too c:
I definitely wouldnt just drop that system into vanilla hoenn or something and expect it to work though yeah haha
My theory is that normal types don't *believe* in ghosts, and thus are unable to affect or be affected by them.
Oh, I didn't know about that Defense Curl flag! That's neat!
I do wonder in particular for Igglybuff and some of the other Baby Mons if Rollout could’ve been implemented more? Its damage increasing could really help overcome some of the more difficult fights especially when it combos with Defense Curl.
Doesn't using defence curl double the damage of rollout? Maybe that was added in a later generation
Random guess, but maybe it's because you can't damage ghosts by "normal" means, which is why the other physical types hit. Apart from fighting because like you said you can't exactly punch a ghost lol.
I always figured normal people don't believe in ghosts so they can't do anything against each other.
Theres something about Igglybuff i just love
They're shaped like a friend!
Hm. Wonder if Defense Curl would've helped Cleffa (or other Normal Pokemon) against Bruno. The TM is out of the way, admittedly.
I think the only way to thematically fix ghost type, would be to turn it into an ability akin to fluffy.
Pokémon possessing the “Ghost” ability are immune to all physical type damage, but take double damage from special type.
Mold breaker stonks go up
Thanks for another great video dude!
Hey Scott, if you’re looking for more stuff to talk about during the Pryce battle, you can always hype up his dapper Gen 4 attire! 😁😂 (Still keeping this going to boost the number of comments on your videos!)
You can even talk about how Pryce is actually good in Pokémon Masters as a speed debuffer.
Ohh, for real? Nice! I think I unlocked him a while back m’self, but I haven’t touched the game in ages 😅
I actually did an Igglybuff solo run! I beat Red with a level 100 Igglybuff knowing Return, Zap Cannon, Icy Wind, and Shadow Ball.
Salt is a rock, and it hits ghosts
I love supernatural. And it was filmed in canadia
After you have recovered and are ready for more pain, you should try to backport wynaut and see how painful that is to try to beat the game with
24:34 I saw that cursor blink to the beat of music :)
Love the vids, was wondering if you ever considered a mod to prevent first stage mons from trying to evolve every level in playthroughs. Wonder how much time they’re losing with ~50 evolution attempts throughout a run
Can you do a Solo Challenge on FR/LG+ on Challenge Difficulty? Maybe at the same time critique that as well. The mod has some quality of life settings you can use including double EXP or Zero EXP, Reusable TMs, Difficulty adjustment and a Nuzlocke Mode even switchable between Fire Red and Leaf Green Modes if you want access to more Pokemon without trading. I am trying on Challenge difficulty which ups the level of all pokemon and gives more Pokemon to Gym Leaders. E.g. Brock has an Added Rhyhorn as his ace to his Geodude and Onix.
Do you have evolution disabled? Never heard you bring it up before.
Okay, NOW I'm here for the suffering.
I did not know that about defense curl and rollout! 🤯
Have you considered using the square for resets for both resets and blackouts?
You could divide the label like "Reset/BO" and then have the numbers X/X for each of them
Way too much overthinking on the Rock vs. Ghost thing. But Salt is used to repel and hurt ghosts. It's a mineral, rock salt. That's the way too much overthinking on it. With that said, why the heck has there always been a ground and rock typing? Basically the same thing.
Prediction: Pichu is faster than Igglybuff, Cleffa & Tyrogue. As soon as I saw it gets Thunder Wave, Sweet Kiss, Mud-Slap & Swift all early I knew it can't really lose to Falkner or Bugsy even with the Medium-Fast growth rate, & the Azelea Town Rival's Bayleef loses to parafusion + Swift. The only L on its moveset is having to carrying Thundershock & get enough coins for Thunder instead of getting Thunderpunch like Elekid. Whitney won't like T-Wave & Headbutt flinch combo, Morty & Janine both don't like HP Ice (1st playthrough will be bad), Chuck doesn't like Thunder, Pryce is bad, HP Ice & Return take down Claire. From there it's on rails & Pichu's Medium-Fast growth rate starts coming in handy to grind for Red, whose electric lead is an easier than normal setup for Pichu
Additionally, some opponents will set up Rain Dance for you, giving you guaranteed Thunders. & Pichu can learn Rain Dance itself to setup from the rocket plotline up through Karen
I love Igglybuff so much, shame the whole family isnt a little stronger. The whole family is my 2nd favourite pokemon.
Venomoth being a gen1 steel type is a GOLD 🥇🪙 take
You know what Pokémon has the fast growth rate for some reason? Vaulting veluza! No idea why, it’s nothing like the other things in that category other than partly pink.
Ghost make your body feel sick (physical) and dark messes with your mind (special).
Mud slap always saves the day😂
I think Pichu's gonna clock in the babies F tier, tho it may surprise me...
I mostly listen to these runs, so when the lance theme came on i was kinda sad that Scott started talking over it. 😅
Yeah, that music is incredible...
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon I genuinely hope that I didn't come across as discouraging. I love your content, merry Christmas Scott
Why is it’s defends 526 during the final fight??
Scott how we doing? Hope you get some good sleep soon
