For most individuals in the modern day, including myself, this is that very first time in our life that we are experiencing the transitional process of the United Kingdom Throne. Not surprisingly there appear to be many traditions and processes put into place to help facilitate all of the necessary courses of action that need to be taken. As an American I am very interested to react and learn more about the timeline of the Queen's funeral, and more specifically the next 10 days. If you enjoy my reaction feel free to leave a like, comment, or subscribe for more videos like this!

Operation London Bridge is hardly a "silly name" for a British operation. It is an iconic Bridge and the capital of the country is London. Why is it silly? "London Bridge Is Falling Down" is not an American lullaby. It is a British nursery rhyme.

    • @yvonneplant9434
      @yvonneplant9434 Před rokem +4

It's also was a very well known nursery rhyme once upon a time:

I'm not sure I would describe London Bridge as iconic: the current bridge is modern and featureless. The one it replaced, a much more handsome structure built in 1830, was bought, dismantled and moved to London, Arizona where it is now. The earlier medieval bridge built in 1209 was a notable, impressive and quaint structure with wooden buildings along its length (until they were removed in 1761).
Tower Bridge is the only bridge in London in current existence that I would describe as 'iconic'.
I think the phrase "London Bridge has fallen" was chosen as the code word because of the nursery rhyme which, incidentally, is presumably the source of the title of the musical "My Fair Lady".

A 'Bank Holiday' is the term we use for a 'Public holiday' here in the UK. This term is used because traditionally the banks would remain closed, and many businesses would not open - therefore allowing people to have a day off work. A Bank holiday usually happens on a Monday, therefore extending the weekend by an extra day.
The Queen's funeral falling on a Monday, has meant that a Bank Holiday was declared to allow the nation to participate. The coronation of King Charles is unlikely to happen straight away as it is also a major logistical event, so likely to happen in 2023, probably when the weather is better in mid-late Spring/early Summer.

Loving your reactions! Balmoral is where the Queen spent her summer every year, going up in August then returning late October. Her children & their families would go up to spend time with her at different times. Bank holiday is just how we refer to national paid holidays and it was announced by King Charles in his address that as the funeral is the Monday we will get the day off so we can watch the historic coverage with everyone else . The reason for such a long time between D-Day and the funeral is due to the historical process that have to happen and her coffin has to lie 'in state' for a clear 4 days to allow the public to pay their respects. It'll be open 24 hours a day from Wednesday, protected by some of the members of her family for short periods and by the Sovereign's Bodyguards and members of the Household Cavalry

Not everyone will necessarily have the Monday off as a Bank Holiday. I volunteer at my local library on a Monday morning and went in today expecting to be told that the place would be closed next Monday for the funeral due to the Bank Holiday announced at the Accession Council. Instead I was told that the local council hadn't made up its mind about whether libraries would close and that they would make a decision later in the week.
Needless to say I told the Library Manager that I wouldn't be in, even if it was going to be open. For the avoidance of doubt, the council concerned is Conservative led.

The public have been able to pay their respects by passing by the coffin, draped in the Scottish Royal Standard and guarded on all four corners by her Scottish bodyguard, the Royal Company of Archers, with the Scottish Crown atop the coffin. My wife and I were lucky enough to be able to do so last night. We queued from 4.30pm to 9.30pm before finally getting into St. Giles Cathedral. A very special and moving moment. There are a few errors. Balmoral Castle is a private residence of the Queen's, but she had an official Palace in Scotland, in which she stayed a few days each year - the Palace of Holyroodhouse. (Misspelt on the video; it is pronounced "holly- ".)
The hearse has by now been driven down from Balmoral to Edinburgh, but they did it slowly. This gave the Scots the opportunity to line the route to give their respects. The village near Balmoral, Ballater, where the Queen was well known, was given particular attention, and a moving moment was when a load of tractors lined the route. ( The Queen was known to be very interested in farming.)
Princess Anne, a tough and capable lady, nevertheless always gave her mother massive respect, and a touching moment is that when her mother's coffin arrived at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, she greeted it with a profound curtsey.
On Saturday, after the Accession Council, the Proclamations started; I recommend you look at either the Principal Proclamation, at St James's Palace, or the Proclamation to the City of London, at the Royal Exchange. The Royal Trumpeters and the Heralds make a great spectacle, and the wording of the Proclamation is magnificent.
Other commenters have rightly raved about Westminster Hall - which dates from 1090! So much history has happened in it.
On the Queen's coffin at the Lying in State will be the Imperial State Crown, the Orb, and the Royal Sceptre. This Crown contains fabulous and historic jewels. Not only is there second largest cut diamond in the world - Star of Africa No 2 - but there is a large uncut spinel, above it, given by Pedro the Cruel, King of Castile, as poor recompense, to Edward, Prince of Wales, the "Black Prince", after had won a battle for him in Spain in 1367. It is known as the 'Black Prince's Ruby', and was worn in the battle-helm of Henry V at Agincourt in 1415.
And the Royal Sceptre contains the largest cut diamond in the world, Star of Africa No 1.
Look out for the Vigil of the Princes.

London Bridge is falling down - is a song which was written in 1744 and the operational code name for the funeral arrangements for the queen. Operation London Bridge is the official code name for the death of a Monarch in the UK exactly for the reason you mentioned, London Bridge in days of old was one of the most important river Thames crossings and the main unifier of London, north and south of the thames. It was only really as London expanded that further bridges were built upon the Thames and most of these around the 1800s or newer… hence why the “London Bridge is falling down” song is one that has stuck through the ages. Everyone has at least heard about and knows about London Bridge… when the news first breaks of a monarchs passing, the code “London Bridge is Down” has historically been used between leading authorities, emergency services and news broadcasters (typically the BBC as the official state news broadcaster) to pass this information between each other without causing public distress, panic etc. The effectiveness of this has since been watered down due to the ease of access to information with the invention of the internet.

As she had reigned for 63 years, and a there weren't a lot of people around who just remembered how things were supposed to be done. There were a lot of arguments over things like the wording of the Coronation Service. At the Coronation of Edward VII, "The ageing and almost blind Archbishop of Canterbury had the prayers printed in large letters on card so he could see them. He still mis-read some of them and at the moment of crowning (after he appeared to drop the crown) he placed it on the King's head the wrong way round! The main thing to bare in mind with the plans for Her Majesty’s funeral is that those plans were drawn up years ago, and that the outline planning contains not only the ceremonial events, the logistics of travel for the Queens casket, VIPs, heads of state etc, London travel infrastructure for tourists and mourners, the King and other family members travel to the four nations and much much much more, but most importantly they also contain the Queens wishes for the whole period, those wishes, as with her late husband, have been meticulously prepared with Her Majesty years ago and constantly updated as time went on. The military have their own plans in place to fulfil their ceremonial duties and the Queens wishes, and the same is true of any of the agencies that have duties to perform. This whole timeline is not something that is being hastily organised, it is in essence a huge civil and military operation that has been refined over the years and has hopefully covered any eventuality. The King can’t be crowned until after the Queen is in her final resting place, and that is a whole different ballgame.

Tyler, as a Brit I enjoyed your video on your thoughts on the Queen’s death. It does seem a lot of pomp and prolonged ceremonies etc but the Royal family involve the public in these matters, for example the procession with the coffin in Scotland and in London the coffin will lie in state so the public can view it and apparently thousands are expected to make the trip and queue to pay their respects. Although most of us respected the Queen the majority are not minded to go and wait for hours to see the coffin nor go and lay flowers at Buckingham Palace. Bank holiday means a national holiday which is usually paid, as you in the USA have holidays on Labour Day, Thanksgiving etc. The word ‘bank’ originates from a day when the banks in England would be officially closed for the day, hence bank holiday rather than national holiday.

Due to the Queens long reign there are few who have seen, let alone taken part in many of the ceremonies taking place during the 10 day period. For example, it is the first time the public have seen the ceremony of Proclamation in Kensington Palace as traditionally it has been private, also not reported on the mainstream media are public ceremonies of proclamation being held in front of town/city halls across the country.
Westminster Abbey is the traditional place of burial for monarchs, but in 1810 the location was moved to St Georges Chapel in Winsor Castle. It is unlikely the public will get to see the final committal as this is considered the time when the immediate family say goodbye.
Westminster Hall built in the 1097 by William II, it is the last remaining piece of the Palace of Westminster, which was burnt down in 1834. It has several uses related to Parliament, For example, Barack Obama's 2011 address to Parliament, since 1910 it has been location for lying in state of the dead monarch.

I am very baffled by the claim in the video that the Coronation will happen just after the end of mourning.
That has just not happened before and I am convinced that this will not happen this time. Queen Elizabeth II’s Coronation happened sixteen months after the death of her father. Her father’s Coronation happened very quickly only five months after his accession, but then he was crowned on the date long planned for his (now abdicated) brother. Had Edward VIII been crowned it would have been fifteen months after his accession.

      @ffotograffydd Před rokem +2

It all depends, it takes place after the official period of mourning, but that varies from monarch to monarch.
From William I onwards monarchs were crowned on the same day they became King, this continued until Edward I. He went to the opposite extreme and it was 22 months between him becoming King and his Coronation - the longest of any English/British monarch to this day.
From then on it ranged from 2 weeks to 2 months, until James I & VI. He was crowned King of Scotland immediately, probably because his mother had been forced to abdicate in his favour whilst he was still a young child. So those responsible for the power grab needed a quick Coronation. But when he became King of England it was over a year before his Coronation. Likewise with his son, Charles I, and 1st grand-son, Charles II. Although James II & VII was much quicker at only 2 months.
William and Mary had their Coronation immediately, but that’s likely because they’d overthrown James II & VII and needed to establish their claim to throne quickly.
Since then the has ranged from 1 month to 18 months. Edward VII’s Coronation had to be postponed because he had appendicitis and almost died. George VI (the Queen’s father) had his only 5 months after becoming King, possibly because the plans were already underway for his brother’s Coronation.
Queen Elizabeth II Coronation was 16 months after she became Queen, in large part because it had become a much bigger event, with leaders travelling from around the world at a time when travel was more difficult and many were still feeling the impact of WWII.
From what I’ve heard this time around most experts don’t seem to think it will be more than a few months. So probably in early spring.

The Unicorn, the Welsh red Dragon and the English lion, were at one time all thought to exist! When one has a kingdom that is well over 1000 years old all sorts of weird stuff survives. These beasts are the heraldic badges of the 3 kingdoms that make up Great Britain, and act as Bearers (they stand ether side of the shield, holding it upright) And yes I do know that Northern Ireland is also part of GB.

Strictly speaking Northern Ireland is not part of Great Britain but is part of the United Kingdom. Great Britain refers to the Kingdoms of England and Scotland and the Principality of Wales and the small islands off their coasts.

The Queen’s body will be flown to RAF Northolt and driven to Westminster Hall to lie in state. There will be a bank holiday on Monday 19th September The Queen’s Funeral. Some places will close but not many as a bank holiday is normal business day for some businesses.

The plans for the Queen’s death have been in place for years. The plan was known as, “London Bridge”. All the monarchs and Prince Philip’s funeral were given bridge titles. There was a plan should she die in Scotland - “Unicorn”. So she died at Balmoral, Scotland, so there’s an additional set of protocol and services. Balmoral is beautiful - it was owned by the Queen, at least it was originally bought by Prince Albert to avoid it being incorporated into the Crown Estates. It’s 50k acres, with a salmon river, mountains, deer stalking, etc.
