Chess has been having a resurgence in popularity this year so I have finally acquiesced to semi-popular demand and started to play a bit. First, let's hone our skills and get a little more warmed up and then let's conquer chess dot com one board gamer at a time.

Egg: Wildest game ever
Me a 500 ELO: you ain’t seen nothin yet
I love the analysis when we both have mate in 1 without noticing. It makes a fun little zigzag as it keeps naively believing we'll notice this turn instead of hunting random peices
@@normalmighty I was able to take my opponent’s queen for free for two turns in a row and I didn’t even notice until the analysis lol. I don’t think my opponent noticed either because he left it there lol.
@@normalmighty I watched two bishops 'attack' each other for like 10 straight moves only to see one move away later for a check on the king. Both were hanging and neither side realized it. They put the IM in Impressive.
@@nickwilson3499 Same here, I sometimes fail to remember pawns can take aswell and just yeet my queen into oblivion. Chess is madness, I absolutely love my 450 ELO amateur chess :D
Using reverse danger levels on the enemy like "oh my queen is hanging? What if I hang mate in 1 instead!"
I seriusly love when you say "they like that move" like the computer is some kind of artificial mind collective.
They hate it! XD
The council favored that move
I think this is called singular they

Your comment deserves some acknowledgement as a funny comment. Due to its multiple layers of memes.
Sounds delicious, I'll have some of that!
Memes are like cake. They are best when triple layered.
ryab take a look at this
This joke is quite the onion
Why are all the openings called Defense? Where's the Sicilian War Crime? Where's the Scandinavian Brutality? The Slav Bioterrorism Gambit?
Sicilian War Crime: Hire the mafia to assassinate your opponent before the game
Scandinavian Brutality: Play brutal death metal loudly so your opponent can't concentrate
Slav Bioterrorism Gambit: Spike your opponent's coffee with vodka
None of White's openings are called Defense, they're called things like System, Game, or Gambit.
Black's responses are called Defense.
But there is, sicilia defence, dragon variation, yugoslav Attack for example
@@solh0029 Generally white's opening are called "attack" like the king's indian 'attack' rather than kings indian 'defense' for black.
@@thewolfmasters The dragon is a very specific opening. Not many theoretically strong openings have names like that. Also whether or not the dragon is theoretically sound is debated even now.
I love you egg man thanks for all your great content

I must say... the first game I was thinking “I don’t know about the move you just made” then you explained and my brain grew 7 sizes! Absolute madman! Pogged out of my mind! Well done sir well done

That first game was very good play for NL, so nice seeing him get better and workout the lines!
Christmas Eve Chess Pog
42:37 That move with the knight let's you press one of your knights to d4 then c2, winning you a queen.
7:50ish gets super hype. All memes aside, the plays are legit awesome. Fantastic content here egg.
Dunno what arbitrage actually means but I'm sure it's somewhere in this video
If something was chosen "arbitrarily" it was picked for a reason that is far from strong or legitimate, mostly random, but with the hint of an intuition that pushes the decision towards being a good one.
Arbitrage is the process of making such decisions
@@mrmanwithchocolate I assume this is a joke?
Arbitrage means buying something from a market where it's cheap and immediately selling it at a market where it's expensive, increasing your profit by doing effectively nothing :)
Batman I fucking wish, I've been a fool in the darkness this whole time.
In trading an arbitrage opportunity is basically where you can buy/sell in a way that guarantees profit at no risk.
Ugh, fine. I’ll subscribe. Don’t stop the chess, this is good shit

Same
and then I hit ‘em with the ol’ “check dunk yada yada boop check”
I love in the first game, Egg doubts every good move. The "bad move" trading a pawn and bishop for a rook was worth it. It simplified the position while he was obviously up. A rook is worth exactly a pawn and bishop. He is learning in his heart of hearts, and I am pogged for it.
Wow that first game was very interesting in a geometrical sense, each side hiding behind a mostly static pawn wall and making sorties out to contest space in the no man's land
Love the English teacher sweater
43:45 I love how he makes it seem like the computer is so judgemental. "They're like, what are you doing" LMAO "they hate it"
Insane how good you are at this.
33:17 is a prime spot to use the question "what would my opponent do if given two moves in a row?"
Thank you for all your content NL. May you and your family have a truly Pogged Christmas
I like how at 9:10 Nl is talking about not being greedy and taking pieces immediately and he misses a checkmate cause he takes a piece immediately.
Edit: Nvm. I’m an idiot. I just ran this through the analysis gods and the rook take is the best
I loved that line at 8:22 where you took +7
Well played and explained, entertaining also
This series is making me actually want to learn and play chess. Thank you.
42:54 just make the move Nxa8 and the engine will tell you! I'm guessing Nxa8 Ncd4 with Nc2 being the threat. Almost mate, he has to give his queen.
Anyone else keeping up with attack on Titan?

@@Monsterassassin3 theyre amazing I highly highly recommend
Merry Christmas guys
This is a legit question. At 43:44, NL plays Ne4 and the computer considers it the best move. Why is it better than Rxd5? Wouldn't you take his pawn and defend the knight at the same time?
It's a blunder. There's no way to stop the E pawn if you take the pawn with rook
Just watched the vod of your fishing stream with sips. Don't usually check oit twitch so please let the yt crowd know if you do more stuff with him in the future. Was an amazing podcast!
42:46 WTF? How is that a blunder?
There must be some incredible galaxy brain play 13 moves deep only a computer can see, but i'm interested to see how that plays out...
At least at Lichess (SF 12+) depth 18 white's situation just gradually gets worse until there's a mate some 50 moves later although black's been hopeless even in my amateur eyes for quite some time. How didn't I see that.
Yeah the main problem seems to be lack of white king safety, when it spends moves to put its knight into a corner for a rook that was out of play. Engine line is complicated, but non engine lines are also showing that black attack is hard to stop.
I think (as mentioned before) people often overvalue taking the cornered inactive rook with a knight that had to make at least 4 moves or so to get there and now itself is stuck in said corner (at least that's how i explain it to myself 😂)
I set it up to test. It's a pretty good thing to look at actually, if you walk the knight to d4, then to C2, you trade knight for queen, and then you can walk back with your king and get the black knight. So it's a free queen 6 moves deep, or if you (like me) don't see that far especially in short games, a queen for rook in 4 moves.
I feel like nl grew the beard just to stroke during chess. Pog video
This game i’m like “NL what are u doin u buffoon!” Right up til the none of my moves are mentioned in the analysis... dunning krueger be true doe
its actually wild how much difference there is when you're down by a 100 elo rank
Good stuff Ryan! Learning a lot from this series
Hey NL chess tip incase you see this. i have watched all of your chess vids and you are quite the positional genius I must say. I think these two games demonstrate your biggest weakness currently. I think you have problem falling into the "opponents game". For example in the first game you countered your opponents moves with higher threats and such and kept your opponent on the backburner until you could trade the game down into a winning endgame beautifully done. The second game however you let shallow threats force your pieces to disadvantages spots where in turn your opponent found tactics to win. You also traded your extremely well positioned queen when you were only a pawn up. My suggestion would be to analyze your oppentes threats a little longer and keep on the attack as long as you can. To anyone who has read this far these are just suggestions and i have the same elo as NL so i'm no expert.
Poor Baron Egg let that last game get away from him.
Greatest thumbnail of egglord
Loving these chess videos from PogMaster NL.
yoo that first game was super pog, an intellectual feasting for my gourd to consume
This was wild. Tactics in the second game is pure genius. I'm not used to NL being that good.
My new years resolution is to learn how to play chess so I can appreciate nl being a God tier gamer in yet another game

Exciting to watch a man destroy his opponents armies
Tourney when?
“They’re gonna queenside castle, which, I’m flabbergasted”
I mean, they are playing the Scandinavian. What else did you expect? Not castling queenside in the Scandinavian is like not threatening scholar’s mate in the Wayward Queen Attack. If you’re not prepared to castle queenside into a dubious pawn structure, you’re not prepared to play the Scandinavian.
Then again, there’s usually a pawn on c6. Or c7 if you like to live dangerously.
My man's now knows danger levels, let's gooo! 😂
Dang, all those mistakes and blunders, and yet both players are still over 70% accuracy.
I feel like I've seen essentially mistake-less and blunder-less games rated around 20% accuracy in these videos before.
17:51 can someone explain to me why Kd5 isn’t a blunder that leads immediately to Kxd5? I’ve been staring at this for a while
Sure, it’s a discovered attack on the black queen.
opponents queen is under attack by the bishop due to knight moving out of the diagonal, unless im misunderstanding your question
If the knight were to recapture on d5 with Nxd5 (K is King in algebraic notation, btw), white's bishop on d2 takes black's queen on a5
@@BostonFenian @Kevin @sam dang Thank you all! And thanks for the correction on algebraic notation. I've got a lot to learn!
The amount of information that hides in plain sight from NL baffles me.
Alright here's the 411, folks. Say some GM is tryin to checkmate ya flygirl. just give'em one of these 36:26
You had a drawn endgame in the end, shame you didn't try to go for the stalemate
I'd really like to see some chat analysis so i cqn actually see what's going wrong and right in some positions that i am too smooth brain to puzzle out
He's really gotta look at the suggested lines in the analysis.
He missed so many chances, would be good to learn from
I'm hopping into one of your chess videos in the hopes of you indirectly being able to teach me how to play chess, like you did with Isaac. My hopes are low, though.
You threw that last one
That play in the first game was juicy.
Merry Chessmas!
42:59 if only you had a way to analyse why taking the rook is a blunder, someone should really make a program that does that
John Bartholomew would like to have a word with you.
Oh goddamn, 9:00 he had rook retake and get ur h4 knight... but then u had a check, so ye that didnt happen
you wanna fork me, go ahead -trades his rook for a knight-
An unfortunate end to a otherwise great second game.
Ty, egg man

Holy crap you threw that second game

@@JuggernautSPQR I’ve made that mistake before lmao usually it’s just auto correct on iPhone that does it for me, if you look at my name lol
thanks for the company
Just to confirm: NL’s opponent missed a mate at 37:44, right? QH4 or H5? Am I finally getting better at seeing these?
liked for the thumbnail face
The first game was amazing
Pogged out of my pog for chess!
Scandinavian defence is not bad, Levi made a video or two on it you can check it out. Yes it's not the best in classical chess when Magnus plays it against MVL or someone but let's be honest here NL neither you nor your opponents are 3000 elo players so :P
That's the way it goes sir
21:44 why isn't taking the queen the best move?
Because black is being checked by the rook.
The Most poged Game of Chess In History
At 7:29, after Nd4, I thought the opponent's plan was Bxd4 Rxd4 Qxc2 Rxh4, and I thought that this was low-key genius because after the dust settles, the opponent has two rooks and potentially a queen (after e4) threatening NL's king. Rxd4 makes the initially blunder-looking Nd4 move potentially good (it could still be a bad move, my analysis wasn't thorough). Anyway, after Bxd4 exd4?? I literally facepalmed.
I think this egg is going to get me to play chess

Thank Egg 🥚
I just had a game with 99.7% accuracy
Congrats Mr. Fiction
He called the scandinavian goofy haha
I am so disappointed in my fellow Scandinavian player.
If nothing else, that was the wrong time to play the c5 gambit. It’s dubious when you do it right (after an immediate d4), but it’s awful when the discovered attack is already set up like that.
Good Chess, thank you.
That thumbmail made me smile and get immediate hype :)
The title worked, I clicked
You lost the second game due to the decisions you made when your opponent had his knight and queen attacking your castled king, not to anything in the middle game or to you not being on the attack. That's where you lost all your advantage both literally and in terms of the engine's evaluation. The Rg6 move threw away your rook by allowing the knight to fork it and your king, then retaking the knight with your queen instead of a pawn, forcing the queen exchange when you didn't have to. Lastly, trading your knight for the pawn on d6. It looked like you were kind of zipping through this crucial part during the analysis so I just wanted to point it out again. Being comfortable trading is one thing, but being comfortable trading when it negates your advantage, including eliminating your advantage in material, without adequate compensation in terms of position, initiative, enabling you to force a mate, etc., is something you'll want to work on fixing.
Also, the line of moves next to the magnifying glass is the top line worked out for what happens after a given move, so if you're wondering "why doesn't the engine like this move I made? what happens after I do it?" or "why is that the best move?" you can just look at the line to the left of the magnifying glass and see the next 8 moves written out in algebraic notation, where the first move is the best response to the candidate move you're considering.
I think comments like this is why NL never wanted to play chess for his viewers
@@allenhelmuth2214 I don't see why that would be... most of us who play chess want to improve, me included, and I'd appreciate someone pointing out an error I made or telling me there's a particular move I should focus on analyzing, as long as they didn't do so rudely. NL doesn't seem to mind constructive criticism or even "backseat gaming" when it's on stream
@@BostonFenian the community started pushing real hard for chess after seeing he was pretty good during the clubhouse games 51 segments. They would repeatedly ask him to put chess on the channel and he at one point directly said it would never happen. The reason being he didnt want backseat analysis on every mistake he made in the comment section it's very overbearing. You werent rude about it so it's not so bad but it's why he pushed back for so long.
