  • I'm playing on Chess.com -- these aren't sponsored videos but the site seems pretty cool.
    Chess has been having a resurgence in popularity this year so I have finally acquiesced to semi-popular demand and started to play a bit. First, let's hone our skills and get a little more warmed up and then let's conquer chess dot com one board gamer at a time.

      At least at Lichess (SF 12+) depth 18 white's situation just gradually gets worse until there's a mate some 50 moves later although black's been hopeless even in my amateur eyes for quite some time. How didn't I see that.

    • @besNait
      @besNait Před 3 lety

      Yeah the main problem seems to be lack of white king safety, when it spends moves to put its knight into a corner for a rook that was out of play. Engine line is complicated, but non engine lines are also showing that black attack is hard to stop.

    • @andregoepfert2745
      @andregoepfert2745 Před 3 lety +1

      I think (as mentioned before) people often overvalue taking the cornered inactive rook with a knight that had to make at least 4 moves or so to get there and now itself is stuck in said corner (at least that's how i explain it to myself 😂)

    • @SanderJK
      @SanderJK Před 3 lety

      I set it up to test. It's a pretty good thing to look at actually, if you walk the knight to d4, then to C2, you trade knight for queen, and then you can walk back with your king and get the black knight. So it's a free queen 6 moves deep, or if you (like me) don't see that far especially in short games, a queen for rook in 4 moves.

    Hey NL chess tip incase you see this. i have watched all of your chess vids and you are quite the positional genius I must say. I think these two games demonstrate your biggest weakness currently. I think you have problem falling into the "opponents game". For example in the first game you countered your opponents moves with higher threats and such and kept your opponent on the backburner until you could trade the game down into a winning endgame beautifully done. The second game however you let shallow threats force your pieces to disadvantages spots where in turn your opponent found tactics to win. You also traded your extremely well positioned queen when you were only a pawn up. My suggestion would be to analyze your oppentes threats a little longer and keep on the attack as long as you can. To anyone who has read this far these are just suggestions and i have the same elo as NL so i'm no expert.

    Scandinavian defence is not bad, Levi made a video or two on it you can check it out. Yes it's not the best in classical chess when Magnus plays it against MVL or someone but let's be honest here NL neither you nor your opponents are 3000 elo players so :P

    At 7:29, after Nd4, I thought the opponent's plan was Bxd4 Rxd4 Qxc2 Rxh4, and I thought that this was low-key genius because after the dust settles, the opponent has two rooks and potentially a queen (after e4) threatening NL's king. Rxd4 makes the initially blunder-looking Nd4 move potentially good (it could still be a bad move, my analysis wasn't thorough). Anyway, after Bxd4 exd4?? I literally facepalmed.

      If nothing else, that was the wrong time to play the c5 gambit. It’s dubious when you do it right (after an immediate d4), but it’s awful when the discovered attack is already set up like that.

    You lost the second game due to the decisions you made when your opponent had his knight and queen attacking your castled king, not to anything in the middle game or to you not being on the attack. That's where you lost all your advantage both literally and in terms of the engine's evaluation. The Rg6 move threw away your rook by allowing the knight to fork it and your king, then retaking the knight with your queen instead of a pawn, forcing the queen exchange when you didn't have to. Lastly, trading your knight for the pawn on d6. It looked like you were kind of zipping through this crucial part during the analysis so I just wanted to point it out again. Being comfortable trading is one thing, but being comfortable trading when it negates your advantage, including eliminating your advantage in material, without adequate compensation in terms of position, initiative, enabling you to force a mate, etc., is something you'll want to work on fixing.
    Also, the line of moves next to the magnifying glass is the top line worked out for what happens after a given move, so if you're wondering "why doesn't the engine like this move I made? what happens after I do it?" or "why is that the best move?" you can just look at the line to the left of the magnifying glass and see the next 8 moves written out in algebraic notation, where the first move is the best response to the candidate move you're considering.

      @@allenhelmuth2214 I don't see why that would be... most of us who play chess want to improve, me included, and I'd appreciate someone pointing out an error I made or telling me there's a particular move I should focus on analyzing, as long as they didn't do so rudely. NL doesn't seem to mind constructive criticism or even "backseat gaming" when it's on stream

      @@BostonFenian the community started pushing real hard for chess after seeing he was pretty good during the clubhouse games 51 segments. They would repeatedly ask him to put chess on the channel and he at one point directly said it would never happen. The reason being he didnt want backseat analysis on every mistake he made in the comment section it's very overbearing. You werent rude about it so it's not so bad but it's why he pushed back for so long.
