- This is our Group Reaction & Review to AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER Book 3 Episode 1. Aang awakens to find himself weakened, his head full of hair, and all of his friends dressed in Fire Nation clothing as they travel on a stolen Fire Navy ship. It's revealed that after Aang was injured, the group flew back to Chameleon Bay and met up with Hakoda. The Earth King set off alone to see the world, leaving the team without the Earth Kingdom military for the invasion, though a smaller one is being planned.

There are no mixed feelings about the live action airbender movie. It is HATED, not disliked, HATED by ATLA fans. It is one of the worst movies ever made. ATLA fans agree "There is no live action movie in Ba Sing Se" I'm doing you a huge favor an advising you not to watch that movie (unless you just want to get upset) Many other reactors have made that same mistake and it almost always turns into a rant session.
Yeah, at least Death Note had some decent films and not just that Netflix one, all A:TLA fans have is that monstrosity.

It was M Night Shyamalan's chance to get out of director jail after The Happening and Lady in the Water - he was given a story with a devoted fan base and clear arc, and he royally messed it up.

Itâs intentional that the firelord looks like a ânice, normal dudeâ, the writers didnât want him to look stereotypically evil, most tyranic rulers of history actually looked good, so evilness is not about the looks

The reason why Aang was so upset about everyone thinking he was dead is because it happened once before, and the world lost a lot of hope. He doesnât wanna make people think thereâs nothing to help them. And his tattoos are given to those who are master airbenders, so hiding them makes him upset since he canât show his heritage. Seeing as hes the only one left, it hurts knowing heâs the only one who can wear the arrows (other than Appa) and it hurts to hide such a big part of himself
His tattoos are an important part of his culture. It reminds me of women who wear hijabs or how orthodox Jewish men wear kippahs.

I like that detail:Aang reached the same island where Roku's temple was in the 1 season. Also Aang now has 2 marks: on his back and on toe where the lightning came out of his body. This won't be mentioned in the serial and second mark is visible only in small moments

I know it can be real upsetting cause we as the audience knows that Aang can't do it alone in his state. Though he is the last airbender and the avatar, so not being able to live up to the expectations while having a big burden is the reason for his behaviour. I gotta give him props for having some pride and dignity. It wasn't the smartest choice, but if he would have bended over and done exactly as they said, it wouldn't make sense. He may be positive and energetic, but he of all is carrying the biggest burden and he always knows. The show just doesn't give it much screen, but he knows

One of my favorite episodes and one i think is incredibly underrated. I really felt for Aang in this epsiode. Disappearing for 100 years and letting everyone down and then losing at Ba Sing Se had to have hurt him especially considering that people are coounting on him to save them. Just Fantastic Storytelling. There is so much more to come hope you guys enjoy the ride!!

I wasn't gonna say this until this reaction, but as you've now seen, Azula wasn't lying in the Book 2 finale. That was one of the main reasons you guys didn't like it, because you thought Azula was lying just as she was in the first season 2 episode. Zuko was banished and hunting the Avatar for more than 3 years compared to the few weeks at most after his metamorphosis when he was all nice. She offered him everything he wanted and she delivered.

On the other hand, Azulaâs original mission was to capture Zuko and Iroh and bring them home. So Azula in one day accomplished everything: brought down the Earth Kingdom, took out the Avatar, and captured Iroh while technically also bringing in Zuko

The difference between Ozai and Hakoda is immense. Listen to the words Ozai speaks. Not a single word has emotion in it. Not a single word is meant to calm him, beckon him as a father should, a hug is simply not ever going to happen. Look at how Ozai is circling Zuko, like a vulture. Ozai is in control, Ozai is observing, objective, dominant, whereas Zuko is scared, submissive, panicking almost when he hears his father thinks he slayed the Avatar.
Compare that to Hakoda, who has been nothing but nice to both of his kids. When Katara acts angry, he acts self aware. He knows they're probably angry at him because he left. Also compare this conversation between Sokka and Hakoda in season 2, where Sokka reunites with his father. "I'll finally show you that how great of a warrior I am"
"Sokka, you have nothing to prove. I've always known what a great warrior you are." (note: not ver batem)
Well to be fair, Aang's hair was used to show how much time passed. It further sinks in how deeply injured he was.

Mai doesnât cut him off or call him dumb. Zuko opens up to her in a rather dramatic fashion and without any preamble. She asked him if he was cold, not if he was okay. I think itâs better than some of the things Iroh says to try and make Zuko feel better, that he doesnât actually believe, but is just used to try and placate Zukoâs bad moods, and donât work anyway: *Iâm sure he doesnât. Why would he banish you if he didnât care?* Mai is not Katara. Itâs the first time we hear Ozai call Zuko his son. Zuko may be his son in words, but it certainly doesnât feel like it.

Why would he banish you if he doesn't care is actually a truthful comment worded wrong. An Agni kai is a fight to the death your not supposed to leave the opponent alive. So by fire lord not killing Zuko and instead banishing him shows that he didn't want to kill his son so there's some caring there. People take it at face value and can't see what iroh actually meant

The only positive thing I can say is that it proves bending wouldn't look weird in a live action setting.
The movements aren't weird and can be realistically done by normal people with no special effects.
Which makes sense, since actual martial artist were referenced when creating all the bending movements in the show.

What was weird was the dance routine that just moved a single medium sized rock.
However, it does prove that bending would look fine in live action. Unlike things such as energy beams in Dragon ball Z and flying, which would look VERY weird in live action.

Re Live action movie: I'm one of the few who got into ATLA after watching the movie. However it was more of a "WTF is this? I bet someone's made a better version of this" scenario. I want to know where these mixed feelings about the live action movie come from. Because everyone I know that loves or even just appreciates the animation, hates the live action. Iâve not seen anyone say they like the live action. The Avatar fandom just basically pretend the movie didnât even happen by saying âthereâs no movie in Ba Sing Seâ whenever the topic is brought up. If you genuinely enjoy the animation and then go on to watch the live action and enjoy that too, I will be very surprised
only thing i admire about the movie is the cgi. The VFX artists who worked on it deserve appreciation. and avoiding spoilers, i don't mean character design đ€ź, i just mean the effects with the bending

This show was airing during the Iraq War so after this episode, the creators received a lot fan mail from kids saying how much they related to the reunion scene between Katara and her dad.
Azula is such an amazing villain. One of the best in fiction and one of my favorites, love her theme music too. You guys are going to have to decide if you hate or love Zuko now because he's always drippy. This season is amazing I can't wait. Yes Raphael all the elements are amazing

@@Serryy When the S2 Finale dropped idk a single person that thought what Zuko did was cool regardless of his internal struggle. He betrayed Katara who he just had a heart-to-hearth with and worse than that, his Uncle.
He's a snake in the eyes of the main cast, hence why none of them trusted him later on until he worked to save them. When watching I'm p. sure most of us thought he'd join up with Aang and co. duting the finale.

Iroh being anti fire nation and saving Katara comes out of nowhere to him which means that he didnt even betray Iroh when he attacked Aang. I love the way the fire lord is introduced. Like this guy has been built up for so long. But then you see him and like, heâs not traditionally evil or ugly looking. In fact heâs kinda handsome and almost feminine looking.

Azula gave Zuko the credit because without a body she canât fully confirm Aangâs death. So itâs sorta of a win-win situation as if Aang was dead, Zuko will be in her debt for life but if Aang managed to survive, the blame would fall on Zuko. Add in that she captured Ba Sing Sa and she doesnât need anymore credit
We see how Aang shaves his head in "Tales of Ba Sing Se."

Fire Lord Ozai looking like a normal person was an incredibly important development in the series and I'll explain why. A:TLA was created by an American team for an American audience and it was first released three and a half years after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. In that time, American culture had experienced a huge rise in blind, sometimes violently backed patriotism and hate crimes against citizens who were perceived as "the enemy." A slew of movies had come out in that time depicting war as the ultimate glory of the American soldier--propaganda to get young men and women to join the military at a time when we were invading the Middle East and were in great need of additional manpower. Support for the war was at an all-time high. A:TLA, by contrast, was a staunchly anti-war story aimed at a young audience who were, at this time, being indoctrinated into this violent propaganda against Muslim people both overseas and at home. At this time when everyone was wary of "the enemy," A:TLA was groundbreaking in its depiction of "the enemy." It emphasized time and time again that those who we have been trained to hate are just people living their own lives, protecting their own country, believing the lies their own government told them to justify any number of evils. (You'll see this more as you go through Season 3.) A:TLA as a whole approached the concepts of genocide both physical and cultural, colonization, propaganda, refugees and poverty, terrorism, and the horrors of war with incredible nuance not only for a children's program but for any media that had been released in that time period. What it did that is perhaps the most important, though, is that it emphasized that there are bad people and good people on both sides, and all of them look like you and me.
Good point. I didn't watch this until it came out in May 2020, so I never considered how it would impact an audience in 2005 - 2008.
i love the zuko & aang parallels throughout the series leading up to who they became and the bond that was always meant to be. definitely one of my favorite duos in the series, wish they got more screentime together as friends đ
28:08 "Zuko and Aang, something is linked there" Yoo you guys might be onto something here, good job for noting those parallels! đ Think about it this way - one of the last episodes of Book 2 was titled "The Crossroads of Destiny". Zuko and Aang's arcs were on opposite sides of one another, with Zuko trying to get his honor back, and Aang already "had" his honor. Their paths were heading towards one another, and now their destinies have "crossed" ways and they are on the opposite side that they began on. Zuko now HAS his honor and has redeemed himself, while Aang now feels like he has lost his honor and needs to redeem himself.
Not only did I have to wait a year for this season but I was also a kid so it felt so much longer
To let you know every avatar has a greatest mistakes. No avatar is perfect at all. You guys gonna love this season fr just keep on watching.
