    As a RAM 2500 owner I appreciate the seemingly unbiased approach that you take while reviewing trucks. There is no real bashing of brands like some others do, just pointing out the good and what could use some work or change. This is why I remain a subscriber 👍🏽

    Being a dirt moving equipment hauler, having run all of the big 3 trucks, i settled on the Ram because, in my opinion, it handles the weight the best. Its sturdy and solid on the road. As for the mirrors, visibility is second to none. I can see both corners of the trailer in either mirror. I run the 6spd manual, with 3.55 gears. It pulls better, handles the weight better, and get 8 mpg grossing 43,000 lbs vs f450 cab and chassis, with 4.10s, and 4 mpg.

    I have a 2017 RAM 3500 and tow a 20,000 lb trailer. I have the HO Cummins with the Aisin tranny and 4:10 gears. Best truck I've ever owned for pulling. Runs lower rpms and gets better mpg than my previous F350 and F450. Just a joy to pull with in the mountains.

    definitely agree on your assessment of High Output vs regular. I've owned two 2500 Cummins tradesman (2016/2017 - cummins with 68) and now I own a 3500 with Megacab and Aisin. Both trucks feel very similar and I can't tell the difference as a conservative driver... could be that the 3500 platform with megacab is bit heavier as well though. I'm am biased towards the Aisin transmission and cummins... love the antiquity of the inline 6 Cummins.

    Sounds like a nice truck. thanks for another great review I have to be honest though since 2001 I've had five different GM trucks with Allison Transmissions the first was an 8.1 liter 3500 Dually the rest were all Duramax chassis. I've never once had any trouble with the Allison Transmission nothing not one problem they are great transmission.

    If you want to tow anything it’s always a Ram! I had a Ram 3500 4x4 tow truck with a 24 inch frame extension and it was a monster. It wasn’t as quick as the 450 I had and the 550 I had but it was the most complete truck I drove. It used to put me to sleep at night. Can’t wait for the next video!!

  • @laethevanginkle3816

    I own a 2014 Ram Dually with the Aisan Tranny. I use my truck as a commercial truck hauling RV's for Horizon Transport. It has been great to me. I love the seat comfort and ergonomics of the cab. IE, trailer brake controller and exhaust brake controller. The mirrors are great in the upright position but are horrible in the down position. So I just leave mine up loaded or not. I pull the Coquihalla Highway in BC CN with no problems any weight. Grant it I am not pulling that road at the speed limit. I pull it at 50mph and let the truck do the work. Letting the Cummins settle in and do the work at lower rpm is best for the engine and tranny. I also get 17.5ish empty with 125 gallons of fuel on board and 11.8 pulling a 12 thousand pound 5th wheel at 60mph on flat ground. Those are not bad numbers. Again, I dont put my hammer pedal down much because it uses more fuel thus taking more money out of my pocket. Would I buy another Ram Dually? Yes, but would get a mega cab dually souly to have more sleeping room. I also completely removed my backseat and built a nice bed, place for storage and a 12volt fridge. It has room for me and my 2 dachshund road dogs 😎. I hope this helps anyone considering Ram for commercial use. I have no bad feelings to the Ford or Chev owners. To each their own as those trucks are nice rigs as well. 1 other negative on my truck...The DEF emissions stuff. I would delete it if I were the average truck owner, but I am required under law to have it running to California and Vermont.

    I love your videos the mirrors are actually one of my favorite things on my Ram but then again I never run with them down. As for the 68rfe when I got my truck I ordered a programmer smarty jr run the 100 horse sport tune and a line pressure Fuller and told myself as hard as I drive and as heavy as I tow I'm going to have to put a built Transmission in it soon a hundred thousand miles and 7 years later still shifting perfectly firm.

  • @danieldewilson
    @danieldewilson Před 5 lety

    Yes the mirrors are an issue. In the down position I noticed a big blind spot that almost caused an accident but Ill have to take some of the blame on that one. The mirrors in the towing position are soo much better. No blind spot at all and I find my self using just the bubble mirrors.

    I come from a huge GM family. My pop builds GMs and I chose my ‘17 RAM 3500 SRW CUMMINS/AISIN over all three big manufacturers. I spent a LOT of time in all three major brands. My RAM is just an easier to function, stronger, and better suited hauler for me. Liked the other trucks but this one just gives me much more confidence when pulling my trailer, toys. My favorite part is when I start and stop the Cummins when I’m sitting in it. If you’ve never done so then you just don’t know. #BOSS

    I used hate my mirrors on my 15 2500 since I was switching from an f250 but after I drove it for a while I got used to them. The hardest thing for me was the constant switching from down and up for towing since I tow daily. eventually I just started to keep them down for pretty much everything recently just traded in my 2015 2500 6 speed to a 2017 3500 with an aisin. Was shocked at the difference between the 6 speed and the aisin. I've been very happy with my last 2 trucks haven't hand any problems with my daily abuse. At this day in age I believe it comes down to a personal choice on trucks not what truck is better. All have there strong points and all have there weak points. Thank you for keeping your review so biased.

    I tow trailers ranging from 6000 and 7000 lbs with a 2017 ram 2500 with the Cummins and aisin tranny. I forget that I’m towing. Feels like it could handle much more. I’m towing throughout southern Utah where I think the high output engine does seem nice when I’m going uphill at high altitudes. Plus the exhaust break is beautiful when I’m going back down. The mirrors do suck! But I’ve learned to live with it, not a killer for me. Maybe when I’m towing bigger trailers. Love the ford. I’d take the ford over the gm personally. Nice vid!

    We drive a 2015 Ram 2500 Big Horn, crew cab, 6.7L Cummins Turbo Diesel SRW. It has been a towing beast, with the exhaust brake maintaining speeds even down the runaway truck ramp areas through the Western Maryland and West Virginia mountains, with loads up to 15,500 lbs without fail. The one complaint, the tow mirrors when not in the towing configuration. I do hope they come up with something different for the mirrors as you suggest.

    1) You can get the 68RFE with a 4.10 rear... much better setup.
    2) Did that truck have the rear auto leveling? That will aid in the stiffer ride.
    3) Even though it's not the HO, the smallest of tunes will get you to the same output and higher. And a 68RFE is going to be easier to to build than a Aisin.

      BornRaisedInCSA: Yes sir. Even the Aisin is now available in a 3.42. The Air ride option does nothing to improve ride comfort, it's designed purely for load leveling. I've drive the RAM with it as well as all my trucks have has Air Lift systems.

    Thank you Sir for the review. I’m currently in the market for a dually truck, probably officially not for another year or so. I’m not in the financial position to buy new, I’m looking for 2006-2010 or so, something around the $20k-$25k price range. I watch all your videos, I’m a big fan. You almost have me sold on a F-450 if I can find one in my area. Otherwise I really like the way Cummins sounds. I’ve got an open mind on them all and I appreciate your reviews. Could care less about either automatic transmission option. I know only the high output comes in auto flavor..... But what I'm the most proud of Ram about is they are the last of the big three that offer the 6-speed manual. I know the take rate is less with the manual, but after years of OTR driving I've done, nothing beats the manual.

    Great review, but the mirrors are faulty when folded, but it gives you more reason to have em up all the time which I think looks great on dodge trucks. Although I do miss the looks of the 2003-2008 Dodge trucks, 06 being my favorite. The 4th generation “Ram” trucks have come a long way and look great in a 4 door long bed configuration in a 3500 SRWheel

    I really do like Ram after driving my Uncles over the summer their is 2 things I can't get over 1 is the chrome I'm really not a fan of chrome just looks cheap to me. the other is the chrome trim around the windows is flexible when it is not supposed to be at all. Other than that it is great I love the Cummings and the transmission issues is my only real worry of mine. although the big three all make great trucks I favor Ford and Ram but with Ford diesels it has to be 15 and up because of the problems they have had with models older than that. Great review as always.

      BH 76 that’s good I’m glad you haven’t had any problems, but from what I’ve read of forums and heard from Ford diesel techs the 11-14’ have a higher tendency to blow turbos seals or turbos but that’s kind of suspected since it was a brand new motor at the time it was made so you have to expect some issues. Although that is not that big of a problem I think that you have to take the cab off of the frame to get to the turbo but since you own one you can elaborate on that for me because I am not sure about that.

I drove both the 68RFE and the Aisin and could tell right away there was a difference. Granted that was back to back, but it was obvious. It wouldn't be a deal breaker, especially if I needed that additional power, but since I don't, I felt the shifts were too "heavy duty" feeling for daily driving.

    The interior is nice, I just wish the temperature was controlled with a knob like the fan speed instead of the button, making rapid changes are more difficult however if you have the thermostat style the buttons are fine. I also wish there was a button to change in-between the vent settings instead of having to access the climate screen on the infotainment system. i do not have any experience with rams towing mirrors but i could see how the rotating of the mirror would make using the convex side of it more of a pain.

How ever I do have to move the con caved mirror up just a tick to see best around the camper and I tend to forget to move it back when I’m done. That causes a slight blind spot. On the highway. But my mirrors are down unless towing. One thing I wish I had was power extending. I for get so many times to fold them out before hitting the road on camping trips. Hope ram adds a few more positions for the power seat. Think if I buy another ram I’m going to look at the 6.7 hemi. I think that’s the big gas engine.

    I have a 2012 Ram, but it's a 1500. The mirrors work pretty good for me, but I felt the need to add blind spot mirrors. I thought the previous generation of trucks had better mirrors. They were smaller, but I found they had better visibility than the new ones. That being said, I don't tow. I have never towed anything with my trucks. The bed does all the work. So I can't comment on how the mirrors are for towing.

    Hey Big Truck! If I were to buy a Ram Cummins, I would Buy either the Aisin trans. Or the Manual! Not the one you tested! As nice as your Big Ford is, the Ram has a certain feel and ride, in all the HD/Sd trucks I’ve gone out to test drive, the Ram at all trim levels stand tall! The best I’ve ever had the pleasure to drive, was a manual 2500 Ram a friend has, it’s a Laramie in Pearl White with a beautiful Light Tan Dark Brown Black interior, with the great UCONNECT 8.4” with the high end Speaker System. He gets over 20 mpg hy and 18 city, when he’s driving easy and short shifts using all the tq even the limited Cummins has! He tows a 22,000 lowboy with ease! The only difference the HO Aisin and his is in the numbers, along with a long uphill grade, where he needs to pay attention to the exhaust temperature, where in the HO Aisin has the extra power and cooling capacity that helps make the bigger difference. Also as far as 0-60 acceleration, the faster shifting Auto, with the higher high rpm power gets you down the road and in troubled quicker! I wish the HO Aisin was available on the 2500 Ram! That would be an awesome truck! Because the ride on the Ram is better than the Ford SD!

    Try a 23 year old Ram lol.
    In all seriousness, Ive driven newer Ford trucks and honestly mechanically they're killing me. I love the ride, but recently I had one lose a body mount? They have great power when I don't have egr sensor failures. I'm really on the border of love and hate.
    Then one of my work Rams gave me death wobble on a 35 mph on ramp. After I saved it, it just continued on fine the rest of the trip. Now I'm more conflicted.

    What do you think of their manual transmissions in the Rams 3500 Do you think it would be OK for tying a huge fifth wheel like a 40 foot cyclone or some sort of fifth wheel toy hauler that’s full-time living rated? Big truck Big Rv

  • @brandoncaldwell95
    @brandoncaldwell95 Před 6 lety

    I do believe the 3.42 was the single rear wheel and the 3.73 and 4.10 were the dually. Least thats what ive been encountering. Either way, this is close to exactly the truck i want. I prefer the laramie version with all the options but not the sunroof.... Also the mirror thing i know too well. Why ram owners keep the tow mirror status as thats what we do with the 1 ram we have already. With that said ill be buying another.

    As a new 1st Ram owner this past July, I never liked the moose mirrors. Now that I own one, I like them. Takes some getting used to but I find them easy to use especially when towing. What I find lacking is 12v plugs, 1 front, 1 back, and none in the bed. Sad that my $67k truck it needs more 12v plug ins. Ride is great, power is incredible, comfort is real, not fluff. I'm a big guy, I need it to be comfortable.

    Aisin transmission?
    I thought it was known as the Allison Transmission. When did the Aisin come out?
    How does it compare to the Allison?

  • @jimmallery294
    @jimmallery294 Před 6 lety +7

    The HO Cummins will not provide the full 900 foot pounds of torque until third gear. The Aisin transmission is a medium duty truck transmission. The exhaust brake on the engine is wonderful going down mountains. It saves the service brakes. As to the towing mirrors I have driven Fords and GM and the Ram has 'by far' the best towing mirrors I have ever used. Yea, it takes a little time to get used to them but once you do the mirrors are steady and give a good picture on what is behind and along side. If you really want to tow heavy this is not the Ram for that. You definitely want the HO engine and the Aisin transmission. As to longevity, the Cummins basically comes 'bullet proofed' from the factory unlike some previous 6.0 and 6.4 Power Stroke engines. Thanks for the video.

    Good video. I never get why Ram has different automatic Transmissions and diesels. Why not just have 1 automatic and 1 diesel for all Rams?! I understand doing it for commercial models but not for non-commercial models. I think they would sell more if you could get the high output in a 2500. But that is me 😀

    • @claytonblachly4031
      @claytonblachly4031 Před 6 lety +1

      Fordsuperduty76 I wish they would too but according to the maintenance schedule the 68rfe would cost less in fluid changes under normal use than the Aisin that could be a reason for 2500 not offering it.

    • @claytonblachly4031
      @claytonblachly4031 Před 6 lety

      Fordsuperduty76 Aisin 30k, 68rfe 60k severe 120k normal. While not a deal breaker to me. It is however available in the 3500 srw but all your gaining is payload by specs. The full towing potential according to specs would be the dually. I believe this makes sense to the manufacturer, maybe not to us consumers though it's also a 3k option that may have some bearing on the 2500 market. I own a 2016 2500 and at the time I couldn't find a 3500 srw Aisin without ordering but for my grocery better use 99% of the time I'm ok with it. I do agree a I would have liked the H.O. in a 2500 even though I would never use it.

    • @ninersforlife7682
      @ninersforlife7682 Před 6 lety +2

      Clayton Blachly actually you're gaining more than payload your gaining towing capacity also. if you're paying $60,000 for a truck what's another couple of thousand dollars? If Ford and GM can give you the same diesel no matter what model you get Ram can do the same thing. I personally believe they do it to force you to buy a certain model.

    • @claytonblachly4031
      @claytonblachly4031 Před 6 lety

      Fordsuperduty76 I'll have to check the towing 2500 vs 3500srw again but for advertised ratings in 2016 the 3500 srw did not benefit from the Aisin. I'm guessing according to Ram if you want the Aisin you'll just buy a 3500 with one. This is one mystery the consumer probably won't get but makes sense to the auto maker. 2018 specs may differ though

    • @ninersforlife7682
      @ninersforlife7682 Před 6 lety

      Clayton Blachly well according to what I read online a 3500 Dually with the high output and Allison can haul 32,000 pounds the same truck without the high output and without the Allison is 22,000.

    Curiosity ... if you had to tow a trailer with a load of 43 feet and 30,000 Lbs, among these options ... which one would you choose and why? ... Freightliner 106 m2 + Transmission Allison or Ram 3500 Dually + Transmission Aisin

    • @BigTruckBigRV
      @BigTruckBigRV  Před 6 lety

      probably the RAM if I planned on driving it as my everyday vehicle as well. If it was only as a hotshot or vocational truck, I'd do the Freightliner

    • @viktortam5116
      @viktortam5116 Před 6 lety

      ok, you're really right ... regarding the Cummins 8,7Lts TD engine (L9?) + Transm. Allison that uses Freightliner in its vehicles and the engine Cummins 6,7Lts TD (i6) + Transm. Aisin that employs Ram ... Is there any significant difference? You know, Torque, Power, relationship between the revolutions of the engine and the power delivered by this, consumption in long and short sections

    Great review, looking forward to Part 2. I own a 2017 Dually and I leave me mirrors up all the time because they just don't work in the down position. I do find it looks odd or funny on a SRW model when the mirrors are up but not towing. With the Dually humps, the mirrors in the up position seem to fit since they're nearly the same width as the humps.
    I've been a Ford guy for many many years but when I needed to jump up to this class, I chose the RAM and I'm very happy with it. Love the truck.
