- A graduate visa in the UK (or PSW/Graduate route/Post-study work visa) was introduced in the UK in July 2021. Now, in 2022 I want to provide some updates on the reality of post-graduate work permit/post-study work visa in the UK. PSW Visa/Graduate Route is an amazing opportunity, but it is not without its limitations. I share the reality that I have seen so far, what I have observed and heard from many international students in the UK that already have a graduate visa or planning to apply to graduate route/PSW in the UK in 2022.
I will also talk about the eligibility of graduate route visas, what has been seen so far in terms of the pros and cons of graduate visas for international students and important things to keep in mind if you wish to switch to this post study immigration route or post-study work permit! In summary, the graduate visa is great, but you need to know the reality of it.

I have already tested this visa and This visa isn't worth for finding graduate job, lots of comapnies won't hire fresher in this visa and small comapnies don't have T2 license. studying in canada or any european country is better.
Thank you so much for this super insightful video Valeria! You have no idea how much you’re helping international students with your career coaching videos and tips. I’m so happy I stumbled across your channel. Before this, the limited guidance on international student visa options was a major source of anxiety for me. Your channel has given me hope and inspiration that it is possible to get a PSW. You’re amazing!
Thank you so much, this comment made my day ❤️
Thank you for another helpful video! Always following your contents!
Thank you Sandy :) You are very kind
Extremely helpful insights on the Visa. Would also like to add that the cost of Graduate Route Visa is really high. About £2000 for 2 years!!
Extremely useful information thank you madam for yhe candid & forthright discussion. Brilliant stuff . Very helpful to my Daughter.
Insightful and extremely helpful, thank you!
You're very welcome!
Extremely insightful as expected everytime I open one of your emails notifications, once again, thank you! This video responded most of my question in regards to how Graduate Visa has change the things during the process.
In addition, this was my case, my student visa expired before the Graduate Visa became active, thereby I could not apply for this visa. However, I still had dissertation material left to finish by the time I left, then I finished it couple of weeks later.
@@starfish258852 Thank you so much for your comment! So are you now outside the UK?
Yes, unfortunately currently I am outside the UK. However, I am looking forward to return to the UK either to Work as a skilled worker or potentially do another MSc/PhD depending - Hopefully as a skilled worker, since I do really want to work and live there!, hence why I like to be constantly informed on the current and upcoming immigration policies.

The issue is not really getting the PSW visa but more how many companies end up giving a toss about sponsoring the individual as they near the end of their PSW visa!
100%!
Lovely video. So charming!
Thank you for helpful information 😀
Thank you!!
Thank you so much for this video, because it does really cover all my inquiries. I hope I find a sponsor, so I can get my Skilled worker Visa, and have a permanent life in UK.
I’m sure you will! Good luck 😊
This is one of your best videos you made along with the interview video with Yash Dubal. Well done Valeria on sharing those realities which I can confirm personally. I have switched to the graduate visa last Sep. I faced difficulties with explaining the visa condition and sponsorship needs during interviews for graduate schemes.
I have friends who still working warehouse and security jobs, while others who found short-term (FTC opportunities) jobs. I am hoping to go the teaching route as I found it rewarding and relevant to my previous teaching experience.

Thank you so much! This video was super helpful.
I wonder if maybe this would be beneficial in getting a skilled worker visa as a primary school teacher after completing a PGCE with QTS program
Don't go to the UK for studies it is harder to get a job over there. As not many companies hire international people and the job market is very tight and quite difficult to survive in London as it is more expensive over there. I highly recommend going to other countries which have some job security and settling over there.
Instead go to countries like the USA, Canada, Germany, etc at least there are people who are getting jobs and other benefits. The UK is good if you have an offer letter from a big company.
@@nomad7317 I think salary are high in UK in Faang as mentioned in levels.fyi. However, apart from salary the work culture is pretty nice and work off days are more compared to North America. Weather and location preference also play a huge role. But if someone gets job opportunity in UK, one should go for it. BTW, Nomad please do share your LinkedIn, so we can connect.
Hi Valeria ! This question isn't about psw. Do you think there is a high demand in finance sector in the uk after IT ?
I have a very URGENT question. If I work full-time on the graduate route visa, do I have to pay income taxes usually dedicated by the employer?
So cute
Make a video on the co op courses. Like 1year course completion then for 1year co op. I have heard from few sources that if people apply for such co op courses and they are unable to secure their seat in the final year in those co ops then they dont get the GRADUATE VISA. is it true ? And if someone secures it then they get 2 + 2 work visa.
Hi Valeria! Many thanks for such an informative video. I would like to ask a question related to long-term plans. Let me clarify. What happens after the 2-3 years of graduate visa ends? I can guess that I will have to switch to a Skilled Worker Visa. What happens after that? In other words, what does the whole path from being a foreigner to the permenant resident/a citizen of the UK look like? How long will it take to become a permamnent resident who eventually gets the UK passport? I would appreciate your response. Many thanks.
*you are right and I had observed this too and that's why i am avoiding it even though i am a mature candidate and experienced and UK takes more of the experienced but yet I am a bit scared unless it is Oxford it Cambridge but yet even that won't guarantee anything + the high fee and the salaries are very low and I'll still have the job visa issues*

Hi! Can we do a master's in UK and look for a job in other countries?
Hello, thank you for the video it was really helpful! I have a question I am gonna start an MA in the UK this September. Can I start the job search while I am still studying? And in your experience does finding a job take a long time? In my country people usually have a job secured by the time they graduate that they will start in a few months.
Yes, for sure start the job search while studying, it takes on average 6 months! Especially if you don't have experience, you can apply for graduate schemes which open almost 1 year in advance of the start date!
hello Gokce , i am going to Uk also in Oct. intake could we share some information with each other to be sure from them
Hi Gökçe ! I also am going to start doing my master's in the UK this September. Based on what i have learned from some of the current students, they start applying for jobs 6 months before graduation. I think that means they prepare their CVs, cover letters and start getting ready for interviews almost right from the beginning of their studies. So, I guess that is what we should do, too.
Hello . You mentioned that if someone arrived late for his course he would not be given PSW. What if the person arrived late but successfully completed his or her course?
Hi! Love how crisp and clearly your videos provide the information. I have a question. Am I eligible to apply for graduate schemes if I am going to study for a master's degree in the UK in September? Or is a graduate scheme only for undergraduate students?
The graduate visa or the PSW applies to both undergraduate and postgraduate students. I recently graduated with my master's degree and I'll be applying for this visa soon :)
Many graduate schemes welcome masters students, you would need to check each graduate scheme separately to see their entry requirements, but I got a graduate scheme after my masters :)

My daughter graduated from the University of Reading in 2019, was given Postdoc at the University but had to work for only 4 months before the University was closed down in 2020 and had to come back home with her family I mean to Nigeria. Could you kindly help explain how she could get back on ground. I had to pay for 6000 pounds NHS for the Postdoc which has not been utilised at all on the premise that she will be on salary to pay back the loan. Please I need your advice. The job she is on in Nigeria now is not commensurate with her qualification as there is no University jobs presently in Nigeria. She holds a PhD in Food Microbiology.
Hi, in many full-time graduate job descriptions , I have come across the following terms "candidate must have the right to work in the UK", " candidate must have permanent right to work in the UK" and "candidate must have unrestricted right to work in the UK". Which category does the PSW fall under? It would be helpful if you could shed some light on this. Thanks in advance.
I think what best describes PSW/Graduate Visa is the category "candidate must have the right to work in the UK" - very good question btw!
It also means you can work whatever you want for how ever long of hours you want for two years.

I work at a UK university. If a student fails a module or their dissertation, it depends on the university policy if they can resit, retake the module or resubmit and get the results before the Student visa expires. For example, for some Master programmes that's the case. If the results will be given beyond the expiry date of the visa, the student needs to see if the uni can extend their visa. This will heavily depend on the university policies (not all are the same), and the student circumstances (i.e. having previously declared extenuating circumstances, etc).
If a student remains in the UK even one day after their student visa expires just waiting for the results to apply for the Graduate route (GR), they will be an overstayer (a serious immigration ofence) and obviously won't qualify for the GR. It also will mess up any chance of getting another visa in the future.
PS: The PSW visa was scrapped in 2012, this new programme is called the Graduate Route, which is not the same despite having a similar purpose.
Thank you for clarifying! We call is PSW sometimes even though it is not an official name, but many people understand what it means better if I say ‘PSW’ 😅
I am currently back in my home country as my visa expires. I have to retake two module from September 2022 to May 2023 which is a postgraduate course, will I still be able to proceed with a student visa and will this likely affect my chances for applying a graduate visa in future?
@@booitslovelace1674 you need to check this with the international admissions department at your university, they will be able to advise. Sometimes you are not required to be in attendance for any teaching when repeating a module, you just need to retake any assignment/exam which can be done remotely, but again it depends on the university so you need to ask them.
I also had the problem of my visa expiring before my result was ready because I had to retake a module. I just took a gamble by applying for an extension of my student visa even with my school refusing to issue a new CAS. After about five weeks the home office told me to produce a new CAS. I then sent an email to my school, informing them about my application, and what the home office was requesting. Though they were still adamant about extending my sponsorship, they ensured that my certificate was ready before the deadline the home office gave me, and they informed the home office that I had successfully completed the course. They also said I should go ahead and apply for the graduate visa and they informed the home office that the graduate visa application will be a variation to the student visa application. I also responded to the home office, informing them about the new application being a variation to the old application. Fortunately for me, the home office acknowledged the new application and regarded the student visa application as void. Hence, the application and IHS fees were refunded.

Is there any chance of cancelation of the immigration policy? Like am halfway to my degree then the UK government cancel the post work permit policy , Will I get effected or not ?
Yes, this happened to me. I came in 2011, a similar visa programme closed in 2012 and I graduated in 2014. But I think it will not close in the next two years!
If you move to the UK to study in a master's program but did not complete an undergraduate degree in the UK, can you still apply for the graduate student visa for masters program? Or is it more appropriate to apply for student visa for master's program?
If you do masters, you get a student visa to study your course and then when you graduate and meet eligibility requirements you can apply for graduate visa
I think the reality 8 is true but the extent of the validity is what I’ve not confirmed. I know someone who had to retake a module and the university said they can’t renew his visa.

Is it possible to get a dependent visa on the psw visa? Or is there any alternative approach that we could take?
No, one can not get a dependent visa once your student visa expires. It’s only during this time that he can come with you.
