The first release off of Crooked Still's new release Some Strange Country. c and p 2010 Signature Sounds Recordings Filmed and directed by Grey Sky Films
...and again and again and again... Seriously. I've spent the last year, year and a half, going from song to song... 'Half of what we know', 'Golden Vanity', 'Ecstacy', 'Oh, Agamemnon'... their playing, her voice, the lyrics... I wish they had more albums on vinyl so I could better choose which one I want on my LP display wall, they deserve a place of honor up with with Tool, ISIS, inAeona and Prince.
I saw one of their last concerts in the UK, before they went into hiatus, the audience exploded when they came on, the atmosphere was unsurpassed, the best concert of my life. Having just flown in from a run of Irish festivals, arriving late on a Sunday night, they must have been exhausted, yet still had the time & courtesy to stay & speak to all us punters afterwards. Sadly missed.
Back in 2019 after I graduated high school I 1st heard this song it brought back some nostalgia & took me 2 a while other world of fantasy. Since then I’ve listened 2 several of Crooked Still’s songs, found other artists that play similar music, & made several playlists. 💯
Same. It started with I'm With Her's cover of Crossing Muddy Waters... but Same. The collected works of these girls (Sarah Jarosz sings backup vocals here) is magic.
Crooked Still ROCK! A collection of supremely talented individuals who also gel incredibly well as a band. At the top of their game right now - if you get the chance to see them play live, go!
Wish they were still together and put out more music.they are all great musically and have a style of their own as crooked still. I will never stop listening to them and sharing them with others.
This musical piece initiates a silent approach to its introduction. The singers voice is sweet and defining. It seems mono tone, distant, or maybe flat in key at times. But, well placed in natuality. Perfect. Then the upright bass kicks into full stereo. Opening to the motife of the song. Intreging. It tripped me out. Good musicianship for shure. A beautiful song. Thanks you guys for great music.
first time listen ... was researching Come in My Kitchen.... and look where it led me... now where is this crazy great band playing..... thank you for finding each other.... can hardly wait to see your show ....
I must have listened to this song 100 times by now. First heard it in 2013 after a bad breakup. Found this band on an episode of True Blood, still hits me like a hammer in the chest.
I recently bought this song from iTunes. Love love LOOOOOVVVVVEEEEE Aoife's understated vocals with the super tight string quintet!!! You all work well together. Looking forward to seeing you at Lotus Festival 2010 next week! Please put the lyrics on you website. Thanks!
+Lunay LeZarde Nickel Creek got back together and released a new album last year called "A Dotted Line". Check out the song "Love of Mine", it's like they never stopped making music.
Love it, love it! Crooked Still, y'all are an amazing band! Please, please make your way down to Austin, Texas and bless us with some sweet music. Love and sweet fire, -JPDG
Great stuff from the band Love this and Aiofe's solo album is pretty fine too Love her voice, little bit frail, soft and frankly could listen to her sing all day - it's a thing of wonder 🆒
I got to know this band a bit too late, stumbleon, just as they released SSC album - love it! Its a trad Appalachian song - great rendition. I saw them on their last UK tour in Bedford, what a wonderful happy evening, & we chatted with them afterwards. They are having a well-earned rest for the time being - they need time for themselves after ten years of touring. And I fancied the fiddler in the background - Brittany Haas, check out her music too.
I've read/watched interviews where Aoife identified the 'nautical affair' run as something of a lyrical accomplishment but this song will always be about the intro stanza... the psychological weight of 'blue ribbon' hits me every time with the perfect pause for reflection before the instruments swell... (also: my brain is a dick and makes me hear 'nautical' as 'naughty-girl')
Oh, you guys! It looks awesome!! I remember you were talking (at your show in NH) about going to make the video -- it turned out wonderfully. By the way, I adore this song!
tennisbumojai Holy cow I thought I was the only one who knew about the Bee Eaters they are definitely incredible group I have both their albums and have seen them many times here on CZcams.
NatrixHasYou The singer you see is Aoife O'Donovan, and yes she performed she performed on the goat rodeo sessions along with Chris Thile on the Album.
The only thing I don't like about this video is that it takes place in the city; bluegrass like this should be set in the woods or the mountains or something. But I love this song.
danny allen Aofie and Cory hail from Boston Massachusetts Brittany and Tristan are from California and Dr. Greg Liszt is from Virginia. But as a band they claim Boston because that's where they got started. At the time it was Aofie on vocals, Cory on the double bass, and Dr Greg Liszt on banjo, and Rushad Eggleston on Cello. But in 2007 Rushad departed from the band Brittany and Tristan were brought in as replacements and the rest as you say is history.
Sarah Jarosz is similar, she does a really good cover of the Radiohead "The Tourist" but there is nothing really like Crooked Still. The Wailin Jennys are similar as well
Thanks, will check them out. If you click on my initials, my channel, likes, you'll find 150+ musicians & clips, some of which you may like (don't worry, I won't spam you or anyone else for that matter). There's some absolutely gorgeous music coming thru these days, & great up & coming young talent.
Lol... that is complete double-talk and suggests that you're trying to sound more knowledgeable than you really are. You want the mix to highlight the vocals AND the instrumentation?
'bluegrass' stopped being bluegrass a longtime ago. 'trad' wasn't even a genre when traditional was being played... but 'folk' has included singer/songwriters for quite a few decades. and these folks can play.
Her voice is enchanting and soft. Very beautiful. I will listen to them again.
...and again and again and again...

You have got to see them live, they some of the best musicians alive today... they're that good...
Classical musicians playing bluegrass. I wish my mom was alive to hear this.

This is what keeps acoustic music alive. Beautiful and Creative. So much talent, on every level!
New breath ...i`ve just reborn to love music again..
Same. It started with I'm With Her's cover of Crossing Muddy Waters... but Same. The collected works of these girls (Sarah Jarosz sings backup vocals here) is magic.

The banjo player's side act is awesome too. The Deadly Gentlemen.
Best new music from anyone in years. They've combined a unique blend of talent and created related their own wonderful niche. Long live Crooked Still!
The arrangement is so good.
Wish they were still together and put out more music.they are all great musically and have a style of their own as crooked still. I will never stop listening to them and sharing them with others.
You are right her voice is amazing! and the mix of all the instruments makes this song a 10!!
Everything time I listen to them, they blow me away.
Toni Millett

"And I lost you when you tumbled through the cracks"
::sigh::
Nice. This isn't the kind of music I usually listen to, so I was surprised to find that I liked listening to this song.

Love the song. The video is perfect. A band whose time is now.
Great song, and a great way to start a cloudy day in 2022
I've listened to this five times in a row now.
I saw them twice in two days at the Lotus Festival. Absolutely amazing.
Amazing musicians! I love the depth, the feeling, the soul.
Saw them about 3-4 years ago. A month hasn't passed when the album has been played at least once :)
I think I may have found a balm for the hole in my life left by the breakup of Nickel Creek. Wow!
+Lunay LeZarde Nickel Creek got back together and released a new album last year called "A Dotted Line". Check out the song "Love of Mine", it's like they never stopped making music.

this video captures what IS Crooked Still.

Yes, and check out Tristan's band with his sister: The Bee Eaters......incredible.
tennisbumojai
Holy cow I thought I was the only one who knew about the Bee Eaters they are definitely incredible group I have both their albums and have seen them many times here on CZcams.
Didn't she sing on The Goat Rodeo Sessions? I don't even know her name, but it certainly looks like her.
NatrixHasYou
The singer you see is Aoife O'Donovan, and yes she performed she performed on the goat rodeo sessions along with Chris Thile on the Album.
Play it at 2x speed
@julianchelo absolutely
Allison Krauss-esque.
Yessssss.
The only thing I don't like about this video is that it takes place in the city; bluegrass like this should be set in the woods or the mountains or something. But I love this song.

I think Jarosz is singing backup on the recording (but isn't shown in the video).
definitely better than the crap being out in the country world (with exception for some like Luke Combs and Chris Stapleton)
I really love this band - see my comment above, oh, and tell your friends! Do you have any musical recommendations like this (or similar)?
great show at the Mauch Chunk Opera House last Friday....yea,Jim Thorpe is still dead.
Cady Groves brought me here
who come here because of TLOU2?
@julianchelo haha me too
Arrepiei ate cabelo da bund a kkk the last of us.
sorry to respond so late, you'd probably like punch brothers and the duhks
This music video is just bizarre.
Anyway, this is an original CS song, right?

Something off in this mix. Want the vocal to be further forward and the other instruments more distinct.
Lol... that is complete double-talk and suggests that you're trying to sound more knowledgeable than you really are. You want the mix to highlight the vocals AND the instrumentation?
FIRST........
TLOU 2 comment

what's this business with this girl getting into a taxi and walking around and stuff? I don't get it. I like just watching them play.
Who else is here because The Last of Us?
The music's o.k., but the audio quality makes her vocals annoying. My opinion.
It isn't bluegrass... It isn't folk... It isn't trad... Man, they have a genre of their own. Go crooked still.
Not bad, but the audio makes her vocals annoying. My opinion.
WTF love the band th add sucks
this is the first time seeing this groups faces. kinda creeped out the lead singer looks like n ex to a T
Nice. Should lose the frown. Great band.
aweee... Wsh i could write the lyrics of all this song MEANT.. I think it just means weather - seasons... and that magic of life
