- Sometimes you gotta show some tough love in your garden and make the big decisions about what stays and what goes. I've got a strawberry patch that isn't producing and a bed that is so full that it stops plants from growing. Time to get the hori-hori and the pruners out and take some drastic action.

My last lettuces were all eaten by slugs. As it has been ralning lots lately, we have tons of slugs now. Sowing new ones will have to wait.

My tomatoes have done great. Getting a fair few harvested now, work lunch has had to switch to sandwiches to accommodate them all
We are the same… current rule: every meal involves beans tomatoes and pesto
I let both lettuce and spinach go to seed. The lettuce is amazing, it continues to grow through snow and frost. The spinach is one I really enjoy the taste of.
My strawberry plants are 4 years old, actually producing better than last year. 🤷 I did get a few new ones, plus took the runners and potted those up. I have a grandchild who can't get enough strawberries to eat.😊

Interesting to see your strawberries I changed mine this as I grew from seed , Alpine but although there are plenty of flowers the few strawberries I have are tiny so am looking for a new strawberry for next year xx
Yeah, the continual harvest sounded like a good idea at the time I got them but they haven’t lived up to expectation 😭

I have never had luck with strawberries. I planted some in my greenstalk this year and got a handfull, if that. Blanch and freeze your green beans to eat in the winter in soups.

Here`s been brutal, I have a plum tree coming out, its suffers from massive aphid attack every year , has shothole leaves again. Ive tried early season bone meal , fish blood and bone and general fertilizer over the last few years and it produces very little fruit if at all. I normally prune back all the summer growth just now early August but looks like its getting a real pruning this year!.

Happy birthday, hope you got lots of lovely goodies. We didn't get as many strawberries as we expected this year either, funny that. We've moved from months of no rain at all, to weeks of perpetual rain and winds. But the garden is still producing! I'm loving the spring onions. I left them in to grow really big and they're gorgeous (and quite strong). Love and hugs to you both.

Yours was the first I found and I've never missed an episode since. The meal included my own lettuce, rocket, tomatoes, cucumbers, basil, chives, onion and potatoes! What an exhilarating tour in the garden of Eli and Kate today.....and it's your Birthday, Eli! This vid was packed with party favours.....The Green Stalk (oh how I covet thee) is such a happy story and do, tell us more. My belly-laugh moments happened at 12:00 "...and the greenhouse pfphfphttt (sp?)". Also at 18:00 "....the HMS Dahlia.." What a fun party! Hardly noticed the slaughter and up-rooting wrought by the hori-hori and puners.

Great minds think alike! I just came in from pruning my garden, planting 3 broccolini seedlings, picking tomatoes, and planting lettuce in the Greenstalk (it finally gave up--I can't remember having lettuce this late!). Didn''t move anything--that was last week's job. Beautiful garden, by the way!! Happy Birthday!!

Hope you had a great Birthday Eli. Really enjoy watching your channel here in East Tennessee, USA. I just got bit by the Dahlia bug this past Spring. A little nervous about the idea of having to overwinter them by digging them up but, everything gardening is a learning process. Not sure as to when to take the bulbs up and how I will store them.
Take them up after your first hard frost. Once the plant has been “burned” by it.

I started my gazania a week later then yours (never heard of them untill you mentioned them) and i was wondering if they were doing alright since i don't see flowers yet, but now i see you dont have many yet so i keep my fingers crossed. It's so hard as a beginner to figure out if the plant is struggling and if it is struggling to figure out why she is struggling, so many things to consider 😅
And just as you get the hang of one plant you discover another needs something completely different? 😂

Happy Birthday! Enjoy it! Sadly green stalk doesn't deliver to Norway. I've seen fake ones sold online but I've heard the plastic is inferior and in the Norwegian climate we can't have brittle plastic outside. Nearly ALL of my salad went super bitter this year on account of the heat. Even in my shade bed it went bitter and got eaten by slugs. I have sown some new stuff now and will take full advantage of the cooler weather of late. Sadly our nights are super chilled, it has been all the way down to 8-10 C at night. My plastic greenhouse is bulging from the tomato plants though. Looks like I'll get something if it warms up a little. Fingers crossed.

place damp wood boards around the planters, should then be able to collect the slugs each days, been working for me. can also p[lace boards in the beds just check regular
Thank you for the video. The Dahlias look amazing. I was hoping to get my hands on some this year, but it did not work as planned.
This year I started showing stronger resolve in deciding which plants should stay and which should go. But, it is never an easy choice. Most heartbreaking is when you lose plants to disease, for example, I had to pull out a couple of plants of a round zucchini variety (they were all that I planted of this variety). But, I have certainly never stabbed my plants with a huge knife like you did here 😲 LOL
BTW, I think that I heard someone or something scream "help" when you opened the composting bin. Perhaps you should look into that *shrugs* 😂

Good stuff. I received a solar powered stereo today so I'm hoping to try it in the greenhouse to see if it improves growth :)

@@eliandkate tis indeed... it can play radio, sd card or USB so I put some music on (Billy Connolly actually for the time being) and it can play in the greenhouse and be recharged via the solar panels. I'm curious to see if it will make a difference to the growth... Mythbusters seemed to find there was a possibility it can help growth... so we shall see.

Yup usually you would do that using the runners and save some pennies

Are there previous clips about growing in the Greenstock? Are they an expensive piece of kit?
I think this is the first time I’ve talked much about the greenstalk as this is my first year with it.
Expensive I suppose is your decision. I don’t think it’s expensive for what it is, unfortunately it’s not available in the UK yet so I was lucky to have been gifted it by a friend.

By the way, how often do you need to water your plants?
Depends on the plants, weather and temperatures. More often when it’s warm or windy as that increases evaporation from the soil. In late autumn and winter then I don’t usually water at all because the ground is generally damp all the time. In a week where it’s hot, every couple of days for the thirsty plants.
