In this video we review the basic oxygen delivery systems. Learning to identify the different methods available for oxygen delivery is guaranteed to give your NCLEX score a boost. For the treatment of acute and chronic respiratory disorders, oxygen therapy is frequently utilized in hospital settings. Patients who need home oxygen therapy for chronic conditions are increasingly receiving this treatment in the community. Like other medical procedures, oxygen therapy has negative effects, and improper or unmonitored use can be fatal. The patient should be taken into account while determining the best oxygen delivery strategy, monitoring parameters, goal oxygen saturation, and weaning cues. Notes:
FIO2 (fraction of inspired oxygen) Typically 20%
Nasal Cannula 1-6 L/min
Humidify >4 L/min
3 types of face masks: Simple (5-10 L/min), Ventury, Non-rebreather
Ventury: 4-10 L /min w/ colorful attachments that deliver different levels of FIO2
Non-rebreather: 10-15L
- The critical mask w/ a bag
- ALWAYS ensure the bag is inflated before placing it on the patient
- Valves should open during expiration and close during inhalation
