How to Make Foaming Emulsified Sugar Scrub // fixing deflating sugar scrubs, fluffy whipped scrubs

- In this video, I talk about how my old foaming sugar scrub recipe, while wonderful, was deflating when I ship it. I go over why I think this happened and also go over how I intend to fix this issue. The solution for me was to formulate a foaming emulsified sugar scrub, which is a denser recipe that will not deflate when shipping. This type of sugar scrub is also awesome because it creates a luxurious creamy lotion consistency in the shower thanks to the emulsifying ingredients.

THANK YOU FOR ALL THE SUPPORT! - Jak na to + styl
Living for this video. My friends help push me to sell my sugar scrubs and I been learning about emulsions and it’s been hard for me to choose the right one.... it’s a real process 🤣 lol math and science
It's simply over whipped. Shipping does not cause that much settling. Increase your sugar weight and decrease your whipping time.
This is definitely the culprit!
Girl you're doing fantastic.. Keep being you💖
I get the same problem when I over mix! I have also found that adding more sugar helps. I add the same weight of my base in sugar. Great video! ♥️
I started dabbling in making my first candle & soaps 10 years ago, so I clicked for the business knowledge, but will stay for the unmistakable dynamic you guys have on screen! Wow. It doesn't feel like doing R&D right now, I am totally going to binge watch your vlogs. Thank you guys for being so great, can't wait for the next "episode"!
Finally a foaming scrub that’s emulsified ❤️!
Omg I can’t wait to try this! Looks so luxurious
The raspberry Vanilla Sugar scrub is my all time favourite product you guys offer! I have no patience/time to have baths and soak and relax in the tub (I get bored, even if I bring a book with me, and we have kids in the house so they need the bathroom all the time!) so the sugar scrub is the nicest spa experience for a busy household, non-bath person, person on the go, impatient person! XD XD XD And I have used other sugar scrubs and not gotten such an amazing lather/froth as with yours! Thank you for the amazing product!!!
You're so awesome! Thank you for sharing your experiences with us :)
This is the knowledge I need at the right time as I am about to make my first whipped sugar scrub
Excellent presentation of sharing with your generous audience the perfecting of a product......
Thanks, darling Jerika😘 Enjoyed this so much.
Definitely giving this a try on my scrubs thanks for the tip ❤️❤️❤️
Your sugar scrubs look amazing!!💗💗
Love you so much Jerika!
Wow! I've never seen an emulsified sugar scrub with water in the recipe! I'm intrigued!
When it completely sets up, it will be nice and scoopable 🤗 I never liked oily scrubs. Great job, I love watching your videos!
Looks divine!!
Ty for sharing your experience
OMG ...just finished the video! It looks like ice cream!! 💕🍦✨
Jerika: your meowing is interrupting our video...
Cat: your videoing...yeah meant to talk to you about that...you see the look on my face right...your videoing is interrupting MY LIFE🤣🤣
I am your biggest fan!
I am really getting into making all my own bath and body products at the moment which started when I found your videos 😊 I have seen a recipe like this one that used bees wax, could you use other waxes or is it only bees wax for this sort of product?
That kitty is absolutely precious! The jars with whipped butters in them are piped into the jar. I have not seen many of your videos yet, but have you done that or is it too confining to get a piping in there accurately?
Thank you for sharing! I have been having the same issue.
You're welcome!
Look so wonderful, so happy you got it the way you needed. Can't wait to see more of you creations.
Your kitty is so CUTE!
So can I still use my foaming sugar scrub base still if I want it to be that consistency?
Is there any way to get the recipes after you have become a patreon member? I saw this when it first came out, but that's when I first found your channel and didn't sign up until August. I love watching your videos so much and I like that you and Cale are so friendly and that you don't mind sharing your recipes with others because you want others to get out there and create products as well :) I used to tinker around in my apt awhile ago and would love to have another shot at it.
Yup… I was wondering about that and I’m glad you made a video about it. Are those glass jars? The same you use for candles?
It’s an issue I think crafters making scrubs using foaming bath whip need to be aware of! We’ve even tried underwhipping and still got the deflation. And Yep! Glass jars.
Where do you get your jars from?
Genuinely curious, why you would optiphen rather than germall, since it has water in it as well? Also being potentially exposing to water, it would be a second safety measure to keep from bacteria growing right? Optiphen is for oil only I learned from another & germall is oil & water soluble.
will there be a recipe coming and how did it turn out any deflating?
I love your video so much!! On your etsy shop, you sell candles as well. I try to make candles. I live in Canada. Would you please advise me legal requirements for making and selling candles? There is not much info for legal stuff. Should I submit CNF to Health Canada? Please help!!
How can I make this more soapy? Can I add ready made soap base?
Which emulsifer allows you to mix oil and water?
Beautiful product, looks so yummy almost want to eat it :-) Kisses from UK xx
yup sweet with soapy twitch
Can you do a video on how to start an Etsy shop. I want to start one but the shipping scares me. Like who figures that out. Do I?
Where do you get your jars? 😍
I ordered my first sugar scrub recently from one of my IG friends and fell in LOVE. I didn’t get the concept at first but now it’s a necessity. I want ti try yours next! Also how do you add the mica...do you dilute it in alcohol or just sprinkle it in dry? I’m working on handmade lotion. ☺️
I sprinkled It in dry :)
@@JerikaZimmerman I've never seen a sugar scrub with water before. Doesn't the sugar dissolve?
Can you make 3 oz sizes for traveling
(From the mom on this account) have you ever thought about retailing a soap making it ( like candle kits, and the meal kits)?
Do you sale any of your recipes?
Omg!! This is the exact sane issue I'm having.
Increase your sugar weight and cut back on your whipping time. You're simply over whipping it.
@@denisehaley9271 Ty. Will try that
i wonder ...wont the sugar melt into all that water if the scrub is left unsold for a few months??
What size is your standing mixer?
It looks good enough to eat. :)
You *could* Add and a bit of geletin To thé mix THAT would stabilise thé mixture once whipped?
Ohh! Never thought of that! Do you mean something like Xanthan Gum?
I love watching your videos. I love the emulsified scrub. No mess in the shower. Why don’t you get a ice cream scoop to put it in the jars the one that have the little part to push out things in the scoops. I use it and it work great for me. You can give I a try. ❤️
That sounds amazing! I should get a scoop!
Sometimes I put in the scrub after it sets a bit (I do an emuksified foaming scrub too, but no water) and the ice cream scoop saves my nerves😂
Great video, thank you! I have a video request - I would love to hear about your perspective on switching from working a corporate job to what looks like a work from home small business. Do you get lonely or anything? Do you miss having coworkers? I’d absolutely love to hear.
This is a great video idea! Will work on addressing this as this is something we all can relate to!
@@JerikaZimmerman awesome, I am looking forward to it :)
Emulsified Sugar Scrubs and Foaming Scrubs seem to have the main ingredient causing the problem. That is SUGAR. Sugar dissolves. From the video, yes, there is some settling but also something else is happening. I have made at least 10 different formulas and sugar dissolves. Especially if the sugar scrub is under warm temperatures, it will dissolve pretty fast. I've used different sizes of granule sugar from ultrafine to coarse and mixed different types of granule sugar. Yup, sugar dissolves. And that is good for candy and frosting but as a long lasting exfoliant, not so much. Also have tried different salts and combinations of salts and granule size. Seems like salt does have a longer shelf life before it dissolves. So probably the answer is to provide the warning about the sugar liquifying and for long distance shipping and under hot conditions a good suggestion is to use different exfoliants - such as poppy seed or ground apricot kernels etc. Wondering about JoJoba beads. Has anyone tried these for a shelf life of more than 2 or 3 months? The emulsified mixture or the foaming bath mixture will be the carrier for the exfoliant to work and the water from shower and bath will activate the beautiful bubbles and lotion effect. Maybe if the sugar does liquify is this what is referred to as a body polish? I am thinking that the oil may have to be increased and glycerin decreased otherwise you could get quite sticky and turn into a lollipop! Hahahaha
Thanks for this comment! I've been loving hearing all of the input as this product is so popular and I'm sure many are having this deflation issue.
Maybe the problem you are having is with the glycerin since its water based. Sugar doesnt dissolve in oil as quick as it does in water
@@kayla-rae4770 Could be one of the reasons, however, sugar will dissolve eventually. I think it is shipping in hot temperatures and handling as a major factor which can speed up dissolving. A cold pack in the shipping container may help with slowing the dissolving. Shelf life is a major challenge. I have looked and purchased some scrubs off of store shelfs and they are softer and more liquid after time.
Exactly the sugar dissolves. I use crushed walnut shells, strawberry seeds, and other secret ingredients. But sugar doesn't work right.
Can't wait to try! When will these be in your shop? Tfs
Hoping soon!
@@JerikaZimmerman Thank you!
That looks amazing. Will you be posting a recipe for this scrub?
yes!
When you subscribe to you patrion page will the 5.00 give you access to all recipes or do you need to pay 5.00 for each one
@@glynisvelez3657 it’s all recipes. I subscribed a few days ago.
❤️❤️❤️
Do you think the emulsifiers work in hair care products? Like shampoos or pre-poos?
I use emulsifiers in my shampoos.
I will have to formulate a recipe
I've added more sugar to ours and is perfect :)
Yep, we added more too!
@@JerikaZimmerman there was a time where I said the heck with it being heavy lol and just poured like I do my spices 🤣🤣
Since you are using water, do you need to use a preservative?
Yep!
How long do you test your products?
Is this a recipe that you developed yourself, or was it purchased somewhere? I've seen a similar issue in my own whipped sugar scrub recipe, and would be interested to know! Thank you!
This is my own recipe! I've been formulating and researching ways to improve my products beyond the basic recipe. Hoping to have these available soon!
Very cool idea. Admittedly, I was thinking of trying the same thing early last week, but had never seen it done this way. Seeing as it turned out so nicely for you, may try this with a different ingredients. Too bad about the Leaf's though, but not entirely shocking. Sorry Cale! ;-) Great vid guys! Much love from Northern Ontario.
You should! I really love this formula :)
I'd personally add more "sauce" aka the foaming mixture to the sugar and fill full
Can you also show us how to make body butter scrub bars?❤❤❤
Awesome video idea!
@@JerikaZimmerman thank you! I have failed at the bars 3 times 😂😂
Please mail it to yourself or a friend....and it would give you a better picture of how it would hold up during shipment
So I already made a lovely hand and body lotion, can I just add sugar to my recipe and whip it up?
No, Usually a lotion does not contain surfactants. And the surfactant is the bubble maker. An emulsified sugar or salt scrub has surfactants. Get the formula and keep your lovely lotions as is.
So are you making this in place of your whipped sugar scrub?
Did you actually change the formula or you just changed the steps that you used before?
The formula is very different now.
I make mine thick with our without sugar and my customers get wayyy more soap scrub because I so not pipe it in.
They are very spoiled
Recipe?
Try Freezing them.
Plastic containers help with this..the glass gets too heated during shipping
How did it do? Did it deflate?
They're very stable so far!
@@JerikaZimmerman Ty
The heat and shipping have been screwing me over with my whipped soaps. This is my first summer trying to ship in the heat and I have an order going out today to Arizona where it’s 100+ degrees 😅
Yikkkeeees! Are you reformulating too then?
@@JerikaZimmerman yes, I did. Honestly though, I don’t think anything will be desert heat proof!
I want to try your product so bad... But unfortional you dont sheep international😥😥😥maybe in the future?!🙏🙏🙏🙏🥰😘😘
Hopefully in the future!
You really should change to plastic jars since they will be used in the bath.
All companies I buy from do this
So i should pay to get the recipes?
If i don't pay should i stop watching your channel?
That's entirely your choice, sir.
I think I’m always clicking and watching your videos and hoping for recipes and help with formulating and that’s not the case here.
What?! Jerika is amazing! And I'm grateful for all of the recipes, tips, tricks, and tutorials she does provide
@@marissa7691 I’m not here to bring negativity to this video. I simply stated my opinion. Where some of her videos may offer a recipe.. this one did not. Do not troll. Thank you.
@@xoShardea She recently explained in another vid how someone stole her ideas, recipes, product descriptions, website layout, labels etc and basically made a duplicate of her biz. She said to protect her biz she is cutting back on just how much of how she does what she does she will share.
@@joan-lisa-smith thank you that’s very understandable that’s why I said not to be negative just “how to video” I was expecting recipe. Thanks again
They're coming! Jo is correct and this is why I did not share the recipe here. I will be, though! Just working on creating them in nice printable PDFs that are way more convenient.
I have checked out several videos on this channel and to be honest it was a lot of talk but really no in-depth tutorial especially for beginners I was already at four and there was still no tutorial it was still chatter so onto the next one
