- Some of these are more fun than technical, but they’re still great reads! I learned quite a bit from online resources which I’ll talk about in a future video. Figured it’d still be nice to put these all in.

2:45 "I don't have a background in engineering; I have a degree in music". You continue to amaze me. Keep on rock(et)ing!
@@JoeHacobian math is hard and it should be. It cannot be simple in the complicated world.
@@bogdantimes is not hard, math is like sports, just keep practicing and you will be good :p
@@bogdantimes Quite the opposite actually. As my maths teacher described it to me, math simplifies the real world, the real world is just too complicated for us to understand. Jon von Neuman said something similar:
"If people do not believe that mathematics is simple, it is only because they do not realize how complicated life is."
@@formulaintuition8756 , the ability to find simple rules in the mess of the real world and use math is very much relies on how high the person's IQ is. The ones who say that the math is simple just do not realize that in reality, for the majority of the population the math is very hard.
@@bogdantimes IQ is a measure of 'potential' success, it is very misleading. Richard Feynman had a rather average IQ and yet he has accomplished many in the scientific community. persistence and hard work are much more important. That doesn't mean it is "hard", it just takes time to get there, time that "the majority of the population" will not utilise.

Thanks brother
Thank you
Definitely Going to buy Rocket propulsion elements by George P Sutton 🔥.
Thanks bro
Thank you so much for posting this video Joe! I’ve been looking for some resources to get a pretty good introduction into engineering but never knew where to really start. I wish you nothing but the best & good luck in all of your future endeavors! You’re an inspiring individual on a path toward greatness! You’re the man!
Thank you for this! As an experienced aerospace engineer I’m always looking for recommendations on resources and books. And resources that range from technical to literary are perfect for a wide variety of people - engineers and enthusiasts alike! Again, THANK YOU!
I saw Structures in one of the National Rocketry Conference vids you posted and I'm so glad I did! I'm halfway through. As someone with very little background in mechanical engineering, the book has been an incredibly helpful introduction. I'm excited to read some of these other recs to learn more. Thank you so much for sharing!
I'm currently reading through the "Rocket Propulsion" textbook, its meant for undergraduates so my tiny little mind can still comprehend some of it. And it really helps if you want a general overview of rocketry.
@@chandanvudala6778
Any edition you can get your hands on will probably do fine. You should be able to find a free pdf online.
@@chandanvudala6778
I’ve only read the 9th edition. It’s got a lot of equations and derivations that won’t make sense unless you’ve got the essential maths skills but other than that it should be understandable.
Jeff Vader what math skills do you need to fully understand and grasp the book ? Calculus ?
@@huesenpaul1394 Probably that yeah. And some vector stuff as well. A little of Complex numbers and hyperbolic functions as well. I have a list of things I shall try find that will help
@@Test-ri2kr Let me know, I want to learn this stuff but a bit confused as to where to start. I am gonna probably use khan academy to enhance my understanding of calculus, complex numbers, and learn about hyperbolic functions. before buying this book
Just want to say thank you for your enthusiasm, effort and sharing what you do. Its very inspiring stuff. I don't have a background in engineering but enjoy similar topics from a hobby/curiosity perspective and I found I could relate to your story. Thank you :)
I just want to say congrats on your work! I am starting to develop things myself now, and these books are probably going to save me. Can't wait for the online resources video!!!
I took your recommendation to read Rocket Propulsion Elements from you NAR presentation and I have to say its been extremely informative. Although I admittedly skip over most of the math, its great fun to flip between the different types of engines and learn exactly how they work. I actually just started designing a liquid rocket engine though so ive been going back to some of the math.
I study engineering so I got interested on the channel he recommends about control systems, and when I go to check it out I realize I’ve already watched 6 of it’s videos. I 100% recommend it, helped me lots with Bode diagrams.
Congratulations Bernard that sounds great I love your book reads recommendation and love your BPS channel is pretty good.
You are truly an inspiration. Wish you all the best in your endeavors.
Thanks Joe. I was recently looking for some resources to get into controls and state space. I picked up Longitude too. Good calls.
Thanks for your recommendations it's really cool. Right now I am really excited to read it. Thank You once again ❤❤
Oh man this is right up my alley I wanna buy every single one you mentioned lol
If anyone is interested in the more technical how to of rocket design (especially liquid rockets) I’d recommend “The Design of Liquid Propellant Rocket Engines” by Huzel and Huang. Also known as NASA SP 125. This correlates real well with Sutton’s Rocket Propulsion Elements because Sutton gives a comprehensive overview of propulsion whereas Huzel and Huang give a how to build a rocket engine.
You're inspiring me to study for my Digital Control oral exam that i have next week! :D
I love vids like this, this info is gold and more often than not, people want to bogart their information sources. 👍
Would you mind telling us how you started with all the maths material? How much time you spend and what difficulties you faced during your journey?

Joe: *VIOLENTLY SLAPS BOOK*
Thanks for sharing these books, and thank you for sharing your process of experimenting with model rockets. I really love watching your progress, and how you try to learn from everything.
I’m hoping to start prototyping my own project soon, and your work really inspires me to keep working towards that goal.
On a different note, I have a question for you about the coding involved in your control systems. Given that you have so many sensor inputs, do you ever incorporate fuzzy logic in your code?
All the best ! I am very interested in this stuff and I am trying my best to learn this stuff as I am from an biological background.. still all the best !!!!
Longitude. That was a good one. Some of the descriptions of sailing accidents are haunting.
How do I enroll in the BPS school of model rocketry with professor Joey B?!?
@@jxyzptlk We are working at this very moment! First launch is coming VERY soon ;D
Plz submit ur resumé bps.space/crap
Thanks for sharing your reading library... In reference to Sagan, “Billions” is not even close to his best work. I have read (I believe) all of his books... some of which are no longer published. Carl Sagan changed the course of my life. IMO, he is the most influential scientist that has ever lived! Yes, Einstein and Newton are the ones who changed the course of physics, but Sagan was the first Scientist to even attempt to explain it to the masses.
I realize your focus is on rockets, but! If you are intersted in Sagan, plz read more! He was not only a brilliant science orator, but he was deeply influential in voyager and viking missions as well.
Much of his earlier writings were about the origins of humans , evolution and how we became a collection of molecules capable of contemplating our place in the cosmos. A concept that bothers many people, but humbles me.
I'm a freshman in highschool. I have some background in coding so I'm gonna try the first 2. This guy is so inspiring
senior here, just bought those 2 and gonna give it a try
Awesome. You have plenty of time to learn this stuff!!
I’m also a freshman in hs and I’m gunna try that too but I do have some recommendations, since I have a similar background. Space Flight by Arthur Berman it was in my schools library, it had some basic equation but wasn’t too hard or dense so I really enjoyed it and thinks it’s probably a good start for any other high schoolers. Another one I liked was called Beyond, our Future in Space by Chris Impey. It’s an easy read and just over views where humanity is at with space technology, and I thought it was really interesting.
@@ashleythekittymaster4907 thanks bro for the valuable information
@@ashleythekittymaster4907 Im a Junior in high school, and if you like rocketry, I highly recommend “Ignition: an informal history of rocket propellant.”
My dad recommended both longitude and why things don’t fall down to me. I have longitude sitting next to my bed and have read the Martian four or five times. This is a great list of books!
Longitude is a great book! I bought the Audible version and listened to it on a long trip. The Elegant Universe is outstanding. I read it when it came out. Big fan of Brian Greene. Billions and Billions by Sagan, outstanding (so was Cosmos). Control Theory is, unfortunately, very expensive. Great recommendations!
Happy to use your affiliate link. I need to get more Carl Sagan in my life!
Thanks for the tips!
Wow! Got most the books, nowhere near as adept though! Kudos!
Would also recommend “Rockets, Missiles and Men in Space.” Detailed historical book.
Sobell lived on my street growing up. She and her family are such great people.
You should read simon singh’s longitude. Im sure its very similar but i can honestly say it’s such a beautiful tale. You might like to read it again but with a slightly different slant!
Loved this video!
Please don't forget to mention the author names for each of them. Also a list in the description with author names would be very helpful!
Now I know what to spend my gift card on! Thanks Joe!
thought I was going to hate this video... and yet here I am punching the thumbs up. Excellent books... I've read most of them.
Man this guy has to be supppeeer talented to do and understand all that stuff without having any engineering degree... thumbs up dude and wish u alot of success in future...
Where is the new video on recommended resources??? I am mainly interested in learning how to code, but I find your channel supper interesting!
Would you mind activate English subtitles? The only one by default are Korean subtitles on this video. Thank you.
Awesome job!
Nice video tags Joe!
Before running out to buy the DSP book, it is available for free PDF download from the link below. There, I just saved you $50! www.analog.com/en/education/education-library/scientist_engineers_guide.html
Joe, I recommend you read "Rockets and people" by Boris Chertok.
This is hystory of soviet space technology. Interesting thing that book describes multiple mistakes and funny reasons why first rockets failed. Good humor and a lot of technical detail in book.
I know nasa website has all 4 chapter free to read.
I picked up Longitude. Thank you
A really good book is also "Ignition by John Clark"
Signal and systems- oppenheium
Control system- ogata
Also Ogata: Modern Control Engineering
Ogata actually is the control system Legend!
higly recommend reading the book *structures" it is known to be one book out of 14 that shaped elon musk
We need more space rocket companies in india bhai
It's literally the 2nd book he recommends ya pineapple.
@@Sanatani7727 Even I am doing Aerospace Engineering from IIT Delhi but I only have 2 options with me either working for Lockheed Martin or ISRO - As coming into space business is very capital intensive.
@@shikharverma9855 How hard is it to get your department changed?

My question is despite not having a solid background in math, how did you practice and learn all the required math for rocket physics. What resources did you find very helpful?
I ditto this question
the 9th edition of rocket propulsion elements is also good
Our economy is so terrible, I can not buy it😔
@@megadave1451 You can find pdfs online! Most textbooks are available multiple places online, you just have to search.

Uff, me muero de ganas. Suerte con eso

Love these recommendations but 115 for the book hurts my funds and this ain’t sumin they got at the library so getting hand me downs is the best way to go about it
I recommend Handbook of Model Rocketry by Bill Stine and Rocket Boys by Homer Hickam.
DSP! That's a good one, I learned from that one
The "Structures" book is really good. Highly recommend.
Foundations of Mechanical Accuracy is an excellent book as well.
Sir are you a music student ? But seriously you have incredible skills on rocketry.....lots of respect and best wishes to you and your channel..... Goodluck.......
whats up, im just a teen and like rocketry, what would you did if you were my age? (im 15)
what CAD are you using to design your products? 🧐
I’m a fan of Missile Guidance and Control on amazon
Never thought i'd click so fast on a book video
how is that possible to build a rockets without a really solid background in math! you are my hero! 🙂
I was excited about the J.R Leigh book when you said Brian Douglas suggested it. Then I looked at the price :0
I know you can’t put a price on a really good book, but being a college student $755 is not affordable for a book. :/
In the field of Control Engineering, I am highly recommend classic books "Automatic Control System" of Prof. Benjamin Kuo and "Modern Control Engineering" of Prof. Kasuhiko Ogata".
what kind of PID tunning method did u use to build the rocket?
Think of control theory as feedback theory, because feedback is (usually? always?) an essential part of a control system and how it works. I have a good knowledge of algebra and complex numbers from my EE background, but that's STILL not quite enough to understand control theory.
hi bro , can u give another link for buying books for country like india where shipping option is not available.
Time to get 10 books!
Do you have any advice for how to focus on reading because for some reason I find it difficult to stay focused
Did you ever end up doing the online resources video?
Just looked at one of the books... IT WAS A HUNDRED DOLLARS!! It must be really good
Most underrated channel
You can also read Making of the Atomic Bomb by Richard Rhodes. 🙂
Not only books suggests full lecture videos plz
I read the Wright brothers, it’s pretty great
For electronic circuits, I'd recommend "Electronic Principals" by Albert Malvino. Was recommended to me by a guy at work who use to work in the electronics industry, and not even past the first chapter and i'm already finding it perfect for someone like me who is new to circuitry. Also for some reason it's available for anyone to read and is like the first result on a google search. here is the link fajarahmadfauzi.files.wordpress.com/2015/12/electronic-priciple.pdf
One more thing, I don't think you mentioned electronics, but there's stuff to be learned. MAKE: Electronics is good, but doesn't go very far (okay, there's a lot to electronics, and that's not a real thick book). The Bible is "The Art of Electronics" - the 3rd Edition came out about 5 years ago, and the 2nd Edition was legendary for the previous 25 years (!). If other books only whet your appetite, I strongly recommend TAOE 3rd edition. The authors have a wonderful informal easy-reading writing style that I wish EVERY book had! The Power Supply chapter is available for download from the book's site, artofelectronics.net/ and the "X Chapters" volume came out only a year ago - I haven't read it yet but can endorse it from the several sample articles from it at x.artofelectronics.net/
Interesting list
I Liked how he slapped that bad boy!
The Wright brothers was a fantastic read.
Is the book “Rocket Propulsion Elements” good for beginners? I don’t have any degrees and I’m wondering if I’m able to gather some knowledge from that book.
I was able to understand a pretty good part of the book, however, sometimes i had to almost learn a specific topic to continue reading it, the good thing is that you have youtube and internet, so you can watch videos or read in different pages whatever specific topic you dont understand, there are some things that are deeply connected to other subjects, so those are the ones i just couldn't understand a single thing, *so it depends* , you should give it a try
Start at 1:45
Are you still planning on doing the video on online recourses?
Do you have good books for someone who's in college and haven't taken physics in high cholesterol. Teaches basic physics
Hi sir i am your very big fan and passionate for electronics but really do not know how to start with circuit designing and become a pro like you can you plz plz guide me plz reply very big fan of yours. Plz suggest some good books or videos for the same
I'm the one person here who hasn't read the Martian or seen the movie.
Same.. but I reckon I'll be checking it out now!
You should! They are both really good!
There are some companies like Agnikul (its an Indian private aerospace industry, in case you don't know) which launches 3d printed rockets (which can easily be configured and are highly efficient as Indians don't always waste money in inefficient rockets) to space. Some years later, maybe you will do something similar. You are awesome.
when is your online resourses video coming
Try Linear Systems and Signals by B. P. Lathi
I recommend to you Carl Sagan-Cosmoz.
Which degree are you finished ?
Did his channel recently explode, thought he had a lot less subs a couple months ago
Still waiting for the online resources video, lol :)
Where is the video with online resources?
I read RPE 8th in high school and the questions/answers are riddled with errors, I believe the 7th is a much better version as far as that goes, and idk about the 9th. Good read tho, if you ignore the math

Not a fan of Sagan. Watch his appearances on Tonight Show in the 70s and 80s. Outside of his speculation of Mars being red as a result of iron oxide being correct; What other accomplishment did he have? I like the Cosmos series even though the science is dated. Who knew science could be dated?
Degree in music ...... goosebumps
