I don't think I have ever seen or heard anyone sing or perform with as much genuine emotion as Nanci Griffith. She performed this song numerous times with Townes Van Zandt. It was painful for her to do this, but it was beautiful. Nanci, you were one of a kind; truly special.
Of the many different renditions of Tecumseh Valley , this is the saddest and most beautiful of them. I once knew a "Caroline". Every time l hear this song it brings back bittersweet memories.
I can't believe she's gone, so sad that kids in the future may not discover music like this. Please keep spreading her voice around folks, we can't let genius like this disappear forever.
As Helen Keller said, the best & most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched they must be felt by the heart. Many thanks for always “being there”. Rest In Peace Voice of an Angel. 😢❤️🌷
I have always been a huge fan of Townes and his beautiful ballads, love songs anything he wrote, collected all his LIp's But, when I heard this version of Nancy's, I was Stunned that Anyone could sing another writers tune like this, She understands it. Only thing I can compare it with is Emmy Lou doing a Gram Parson song. Amazingly done.
I just had an urge to listen to Nancy Griffith so I CZcamsd and only now just found out she passed away last year. What a loss to beautiful music! RIP! I'm an Afro-Caribbean man in my mid-60s with a love for an eclectic range of music. I came to Nancy Griffith (Emmy Lou Harris and others) via Linda Ronstadt, through Eagles/Poco/Jackson Browne, etc., that Laurel Canyon sound ("Country-Rock") growing in the early 1970s. By the mid-80's with that sound being represented by only a few, I checked out 80's "New Country" as an option for awhile. Still love country from that era. Still loving JB! Linda, God Bless you!
Just so devastatingly beautiful, you can see the heartbreak in her eyes as she looks towards the heavens. You don't have to guess as to what she was thinking about at that moment it is all in her beautiful eyes that are tearing up.God I miss both of them so much.R.I.P. Townes and Nanci
she's flown away now but her singing remain... she admired Townes, and he payed her his respect when he called her cover of this song the best cover of any of his songs... RIP
Still a great song - i know it for years but still come back to listen - thanks Townes for taking the time to write it and all singers to tell the story
Oh my God. I just found out that Nancy died how could I not have known? She is as well as Emmylou Harris my favorite singer of all time. We're artist broken and all I can do now is cry for the next few days. Such a personal loss.
This is just a brilliant version. Both just mesmerise you. James piano work is priceless. NJ looks at heavens with a gut wrenching tears. The last verse is absolutely fantastic. Cannot describe this version enough.
First encounter was "From a Distance" on Austin City Limits many years ago. Loved her beautiful voice and music ever since. Never afraid to use her voice and music for ideals she believed in. I'm very sad today. Goodbye Nanci
very awesome townes tribute. peter is great...ain't gonna sing no lonesome tune. steve is great...guy-man what a great show that is. i haven't even seen the whole thing yet...james and nanci duet-very nice.
Heads Were A Swingin And Rubber Necking Whilst I was a Driving ! Playing Nancis Music ,,,, Guess That Says It All Rest In Peace Sweet Angel xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Re: who is that guy on piano? James Hooker, Nanci's accompanist/band leader for 20 years. He was also a co-founder of the Amazing Rhythm Aces and played with a few others you might know - Jimi Hendrix, John Hiatt, Stevie Winwood, Paul Butterfield and the Flying Burrito Brothers.
it brings tears to my eyes every time she left bitter is what they say but loved by many for sure ............... this is a tribute to Townes Van Zandt if I remember correctly, but each and everyone that performed that night Is a Giant in their own right
She sang Caroline's story so beautifully. RIP Nanci.

Absolutely Beautiful

Godalmighty what a beautiful version. Townes is smiling, especially now that Nanci is with him. We’ve lost so much talent 😔
The best Version ever
I can't believe she's gone, so sad that kids in the future may not discover music like this. Please keep spreading her voice around folks, we can't let genius like this disappear forever.
I’m still grieving. She was a special, special spirit. Nancy was an Earth Angel, she’s now found eternal peace. God loves her and so do we. ❤️
God I couldn't agree more. Texas and the world lost a beatiful soul when she died way too young. It makes me weep.
❤
As Helen Keller said, the best & most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched they must be felt by the heart.
Many thanks for always “being there”.
Rest In Peace Voice of an Angel. 😢❤️🌷
Beautiful & so sad. Farewell Nanci, your voice and music will continue on.
Rest in peace, dearest Nanci. I still listen to your music at least once a week. "Flyer" is one of my very favorite albums. Sad.

It breaks me every time
@Don Montgomery I thought exactly this. All fabulous in their own ways.

Rest gently Sweet Lady.
Nanci breaks hearts with this version. She is amazing and soulful, such a beauty.
Melancholy...she knew how to phrase a word. She knew how to put the music together and she made everyone who played with her better. Rest in peace.
The sweetest Soul....I am crushed by her passing. R.I.P Nanci...sing with the Angels now!
One of the most beautiful songs about the most sad story
One of the best performances of all time.

What a beautiful song and lovely lady Rest in Peace Nancy I love your music you we're one of the best.
Just brilliant.
It is a darker world without the voice of this angel
I can't believe she has left us. This version is incredible. What amazing lyrics by Townes. I am at a loss.
Someone asked Townes Van Zandt why he wrote such sad songs. He said, "I don't write sad songs, I write hopeless songs."
Every time it breaks me the beauty and tragedy and those lyrics and her voice
Rest in peace Nancy Griffith.
She's crying, she's feeling this one so much....Fare Thee Well Nanci may sunshine walk beside you
This is so freaking real and utterly beautiful.
Fantastic rendition of a great song, now we lost Nancy,RIP..You done well.

The most beautiful song ever written.
RIP Nancy Griffith, a truly great talent! ❤
You don't get better than this. =
Have to get myself together after that. Arlo does a great job with Nancy on this also.
Oh my God. I just found out that Nancy died how could I not have known? She is as well as Emmylou Harris my favorite singer of all time. We're artist broken and all I can do now is cry for the next few days. Such a personal loss.
The words of the saddest song in the world, done with perfection by Nanci
Rest in peace Lovely Lady
This is just a brilliant version. Both just mesmerise you. James piano work is priceless. NJ looks at heavens with a gut wrenching tears. The last verse is absolutely fantastic. Cannot describe this version enough.
Beautiful spirit inside & out. She blessed us with her voice & messages 💜
Hard to imagine this world without her.
Saw her many times during my austin days. Still love her
Perfection. Fare Thee Well.
First encounter was "From a Distance" on Austin City Limits many years ago. Loved her beautiful voice and music ever since. Never afraid to use her voice and music for ideals she believed in. I'm very sad today. Goodbye Nanci
There was once a country like this.
stupenda! oltremodo commovente, per quante volte l ascolto
Rest in peace ! Her middle name is Caroline , coincidentally.
God, I miss this Lady.
Wonderful 😊❤
I will miss Nancyi so much. I wonder which song is sadder--this one or Emmy"s "Red Dirt Girl"? Hard choice for me...
thank you
very awesome townes tribute. peter is great...ain't gonna sing no lonesome tune. steve is great...guy-man what a great show that is. i haven't even seen the whole thing yet...james and nanci duet-very nice.

Crying right now
A simple song to play, but one I struggle to sing without choking up.

...............
this is a tribute to Townes Van Zandt if I remember correctly,
but each and everyone that performed that night Is a Giant in their own right
I always thought I'd get to see her
This is outstanding! 😊 solid performance. ❤
Who is the piano player? At the end when he went into that beautiful piano riff and she looked up soulfully; well it about killed me. RIP dear Nanci.
James Hooker
she had an intimate sense of whatever she sang....
Nanci Griffith was the "real deal".
no words
WOW!
I love Nanci's interpretation of this song. Can anyone post her singing John Philip Griffith and Montana Backroads on CZcams? Please! And 'Thank you'.
Was the songs' narrator one of the men who laid himself down beside the woman who called herself Caroline?
I think "Tecumseh Valley" may be 2nd to "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" in imagery...especially Nanci's verion...
The good really do die young. How very, very sad .
🙌
... at 4:06 it would be nice if she could see them both ...
Raymond.what a loss.makes me sad.but comments.are american...texas
Anyone know what show this was from?
Is that Steve Earle sitting on Nanci' left?
Yes, that's Steve Earle
