  • The Toyota Celica 7th gen from 1999-2005 really gets a bad wrap. To be honest, kind of for good reason. Only way to make the GT-S model reliable is to do an engine overhaul and the GT likes to burn oil.
    However, if you choose to do the work, the GT-S is truly a road worthy car.
    In this video I review and go over common issues related with the Toyota Celica from 2000-2005 to help better educate you about your ride or your future purchase!

      @@AutoMotivate The 2zzge don't burn oil. oil pump breaks only if the engine exceeds 9,500rpm by mishift. the oil pan does not want a change if you do not run on track days and exceed 1g in turns. the synchronizers suffer when they put gl5 fluid and not gl4 wants gl4 in the transmission (the redline mt90 is perfect!). This engine with frequent and correct oil changes with correct and genuine oils as well as genuine spare parts lasts over 250.000kms and I have seen it with my own eyes in many owners👌

    I've had a Celica T23 143hp phase 1 for 7 years, paid 3700 Euros. Yes, it consumes a bit of oil, but apart from that, I have never had a car with so few problems, and it has now 320,000km and still runs perfectly! The engine is surprisingly reliable, and has never needed any particular maintenance. The interior is nothing special, but does the job, except the leather steering wheel which is of good quality.
    Moreover, it's rare to be able to afford a low budget coupe! I haven't found anything else on a small budget that I like so much, and that doesn't require a lot of maintenance.

      I'm on my 2nd 7th gen Celica. Not because the 1st one blew up but because I found a much newer one for a steal with 1 owner from new. This is my current car.
      My old 7th Gen had done 180k miles when I sold it, the guy who bought it was my mechanic who did my MOTs (he never saw the car much) so when he heard I was selling it he ripped my arm off.
      So if you're unsure, don't be and get a Celica. Just be wary of examples that look like they've been thrashed or overly modified.
      And if you're in the UK always go for the Premium model, they shouldn't cost any more than a standard, but you'll get climate control and leather etc.
      Also you won't be sorry if you get the 140bhp instead of a 190.

    The GTS would totally be the way to go for this generation, pretty much bulletproof. The earlier 2000-2002 GT models had oil burning issues like crazy. The 1.8 that was in the gt was also in the 2000-2001 Corolla which also burned oil. My mom owned a 2001 GT, 135k miles and it burned oil but never skipped a beat. She sold it in 2012. My 2000 Corolla with 200k, as long as you kept the oil topped up it was a very reliable car as well, but they burn quick at a rate of a quart per tank. If you're gonna buy one now that they're all pretty used and beat, go the safe route with the GTS.

  • @BlueBomberTurbo
    @BlueBomberTurbo Před 3 lety +9

    FYI, the GT-S oil pump is fine. It's high Gs that kills them, not high revs. Oil starvation at high Gs from the oil being pulled away from the pickup creates cavitation (air bubbles). These air bubbles basically act like small explosions when going through the pump, due to the compression force applied in the process. This causes damage to the oil pump gear and eventually failure. Extra oil, a baffled pan, or an accusump are some solutions. Sure, you can get a billet pump gear to prevent oil pump gear damage, but you're still dealing with oil starvation issues. If the pump doesn't go, something else will. As far as high Gs, good tires and a hard, high speed turn are all that are necessary to cause oil starvation.

    • @BlueBomberTurbo
      @BlueBomberTurbo Před 3 lety +2

      @@arcanevoid9199 Yes, it would let you acknowledge that you're pushing the car hard enough to encounter oil starvation, and tell you that it's time to put one of the fixes into play. I'd suggest an accusump and GT/1ZZ oil pan.
      The bonus of the accusmp is that it also works as a prelube system when you use a pressure-controlled solenoid. It traps pressurized oil when you shut the car down, then when you turn the key to on (before starting), it releases that pressure back into the engine, distributing oil throughout. This prevents a lot of startup wear.

    Very proud celica owner here
    - i got my 6 spd 2000 celica at 290,000 km from someone's lawn, they wanted to scrap the car for the gearbox. Before me the car was totally neglected but somehow flew through the WOF flying colors. It drove me 5 hours back home from sitting on a lawn for years and we did it's first service in years and years, never ever ever had any issues with it and it is reliable and fuel efficient. Even with black, sludge, tar-like oil it was running like a champ. Hardy car and still going strong at 330000 km
    Only issues I've had: boot struts and hinges breaking, a weird pool of water under the rear passenger seat, some rattles in the gear box and some rattles due to the plastic guards not being bolted down.
    Everything else is sound considering it was lawn garbage, it costs me nothing and never needs anything.
    THE most reliable car I've owned and I couldn't reccomend these cars enough especially to people who generally love toyota and would like a good daily runabout that looks kinda neat at the same time!
    (Be careful picking up celicas if they have anything dodgy with the boot, if that shit breaks it will slice someone in half and I always reccomend checking the boot function when getting one of these)

A lot of people buy these as beaters because they're cheap FWD cars with decent mileage, and then treat them like beaters, only doing minimal maintenance if any at all. And then they complain that it's the car's fault when the engine gives up at 50k due to bad oil because "I didn't know I had to change the oil! I thought it would just work!". The issue you describe with the 2zz fuel pump is caused by over revving and therefore choking the fuel pump and starving the engine of oil. However, Celica GT-S with 2zz-ge were rev limited from the factory to 7.9k rpm whereas the japanese version revved all the way out to 8.6k. That is why Toyota dropped the rev limit on the 2002 model and then changed the gates of the transmission to reduce the risk of mis-shifting in 2003 and brought the rev limiter back to where it was for 01-02.

    I saw this pop up when I was looking at reviews of Celica and I’m glad I watched it, I’m getting a great deal on one from a family friend with less 100k miles on it but they said it needs oil every 800 ish miles because it’s old (not sure if their hinting at something or just not car people)… thankfully it’s the 1zz so it shouldn’t be as prone to issues as mentioned but at least I know what to look for if I have more issues with the oil. Thanks

      it needs oil because its burning it, stay away from 1zz

    I have a 2001 Celica GT at 259K+ Miles and it's a much better quality car than the Chevy's, Hyundai's that I've rented which start to have problems at around 80K miles. Edit, I've had this car for 15 years and I bought it used. I would give it a 10 out of 10 stars.

    Only maintenance has been brake pads and regular oil topping.
    This video i BS.
    The 7th gen celica is reliable as rock.

      Just because you’ve had a solid example doesn’t mean others are the same. Please let’s not act like every single one is perfect when there is literal evidence of these issues.

      @@AutoMotivate true. But regarding the general toyota reliability, and the celica at the time, being the top notch choice, I still disagree with your point of view. A maintained celica 7th gen will easily outmatch later and newer toyotas in quality and build.
      Perhaps you just stumbled across a bad example?

    I have a GT-S model of January 2002 and it's now with 150000 Km and the only thing that I can say it's true in this video is the oil consumption... Apart from that nothing of what comes in this video happened... I have Bilstein coilovers and I have been driving this car hard on mountain roads and on autoroutes and never had oil starvation problems... Probably these problems that you talk in this video are due to bad maintenance and bad driving...

      if its using oil there is a problem, gt-s dont burn oil normally. potentially its a oil leak, as the timing over leaks really badly when the gasket goes
