About the dog food - There are certain percentages of what to include in raw dog food, so that it is nutrient balanced and enough calories! (70-80% muscle meat, 10% raw meaty bones, 10% organ meat - 5% of that coming from liver, and you can include 1-2% of fruit and other supplements) There are companies that blend it all together for you or you can do the math and put it together for yourself. We get our premade raw food from the frozen section at the pet food store, we just made sure the brand we chose was grass-fed and raised without hormones/antiobiotics etc with only whole food ingredients. PS I'm no expert so I'd recommend looking at youtube videos and articles online. It takes a bit of work but it is SO worth it - my dog is so much healthier and happier

What I would give to go back to my 30th, I’m about approach the last year in my 30’s
I have a 2 yr old samoyed and we are transitioning him to whole raw food as well from kibbles. Our breeder always told us to start slow, so you can mix kibble and whole food. We are planing to do 25% whole food + 75% kibble, and slowly increase it by 25% after few weeks as long as it doesn't upset his stomach at all
He eats one cup of food twice a day, so we measure the raw food only to be .75 cup, and kibble is .25 cup as a start and put salmon oil, goat milk and some times beef bone broth as additives
My former pup was super picky and sensitive. I went through so many changes and finally ended on farmers dog and a little kibble with joint powder sprinkled on top. She absolutely loved it until the day she passed. Wish I had found it sooner for her. Your vet can give you the best tips on portion and transition. I slowly transitioned mine and she never had any problems. Hope that helps!
Raw food is top for dog nutrition. We switched my dog when she was diagnosed with cancer and my only regret is we didn’t do it before. She was supposed to survive 3 months and she made it over a year, but the differences to her coat and energy were immediate. You can order bulk raw food to take out the need to prep. Dogs Naturally Magazine is a great resource and Steve’s Real Food is one of the top rated raw foods year after years.
Ive had many dogs throughout my life and through it all farmers dog has been the most consistent and seems to be thus far the healthiest for them. I had a french mastiff who ate kibble his entire life who passed away 2 years ago (he was 5) lived a life full of medical problems which is extremely expensive and more importantly heart breaking. I now have 2 bulldogs and a doberman pincher who have been eating farmers dog for the past 2+ years and they are super healthy active and happy! Check them out for sure when exploring new food options for nalla.

I cook my pitbulls food. Ground beef, chicken or turkey, leanest possible. broccoli and carrots I add rice once a month for a week. Dogs really don't need much carbs. Probiotic supp with some salmon oil. He's 50ish pounds gets 2-3 cups of food a day normally or 3 to 4 on high activity days. Also.. I highly recommend keeping some sugar free pumpkin puree on deck for possible diarrhea because it WILL happen eventually lol. It hardens the stool 24-48 hours after. It's not a bad idea to mix it into her food once per week for extra fiber.

I use to give my husky freshpet, but not sure if one day I got a bad batch or something or maybe I didn't check exp date, but she got the diarrheas' for two days. Then I switched back to kibble w a wet can. She's 6 yrs old. But I also added some fruits to her diet. She loves watermelon and her coat has gotten so much better since I started giving her sandia consistently. Cucumber too and just ice.

We’ve been making our own dog food for both our Australian Shepherd’s ever since Farmer’s Dog shit the bed with delivery during Covid.
We sauté 2 different types of meat (rotate week to week) with peas and carrots, add rice, sprinkle in some bone broth and vitamins, throw in a large Tupperware and feed 2x/day throughout the week.
It’s like 1 hour of prep max each week, cheaper than all the “whole/natural” services, and clean as hell.

Don't have to worry about cleaning plastic silverware, just throw it away and grab more out of the box when you need a new utensil. That'd be my guess; zero clean-up.

We’ve been feeding our dogs raw food since 2013, and it has made a significant difference in their health and lifespan. Our oldest dog, a 16-year-old pittie/boxer mix, consistently receives compliments on how great he looks for his age.
For those new to raw feeding, the easiest way to ensure you’re providing the correct nutritional ratios is to purchase from a reputable company that specializes in raw diets. While it’s possible to calculate and prepare the ratios yourself, it does require time and research.
We now use a company called We Feed Raw, which has been the best option we’ve tried. Our dogs absolutely love it. They have a calculator on their website to help you determine the appropriate amount to feed. No kibble in the world will compare to a good species appropriate raw diet. As someone once told me, kibble is the equivalent of feeding your kid a meal replacement bar every meal, every day. Sure, they will survive, but how much will they thrive? Kibble is for convenience to us humans but not the best for your dog. Good on you for wanting the best for your beautiful Nala and hope you can transition her and see for yourself how amazing they do on raw. Best of luck!
Christian, I want to switch my dog to whole foods too. My research resulted in the same outcome as you sadly. I think I concluded that I am going to give him cooked beef, liver, or salmon with a mix of veggies. Probably 1.5 cups per meal and only have him eat twice a day.
My logic is they are mammals too and aren't really that different from humans in terms of benefiting from Intermittent fasting and eating real foods. I'm no expert, but I am certain whole foods will make a big difference in them living a longer healthier happier life as it is less processed and real foods is more nutrient dense. Exercise is something I am working on because they need more exercise so their muscles/joints/ nerves work for their whole life.

I have to dogs and have had them on premium dog food there hole life around 10years each they started having digestion problems 💩 and i thought it could be just age... after a while we tried whole foods and it did wonders for there health plus they love it literally cry couse they want to eat... we basically boil all there food in a big pot so its super simple the only dowside is removing the bones... we put all sorts in but mainly carrots sweet potatoes zucchini pasta and chicken and liver plus any leftover meat we have it its not got a lot of spices...
We use to do rice instead of pasta but did not sit well with them ...

There’s companies now that pre do everything just for her. Try complete raw first. Some dogs will devour and some turn their heads. If she doesn’t like it. Go to cooked whole food. Any brand of kibble is trash. The two big companies: Ollie does raw food and farmers dog does cooked whole. They will also guide you on transitioning over. Check your local area also cause there might be places that do custom for her also. You can pick up local for cheaper sometimes.
From what i have heard, kibble regardless of how well its branded as being made with fresh real clean ingredients, it just is full of crap because of how its made and what it is. They all market themselves as being the ‘nations favourite’ or ‘natural goodness’ etc its all words to get you to buy it. I dont believe any of it gives your dogs all the nutrients they need for health. Kind of like us, dogs also need additional health supplements and vitamins in a high doseage to hit health goals. I was buying vitamin capsules that were 1000iu per day only to be told by a doctor we should be consuming about 10000iu a day and maybe more if we have health problems. Who knows what to believe though as most things doctors dont even agree on and vets are the same. Vets now also more about money than actual care and compassion and recovery for ill dogs. I put my dog of 11 years to sleep a couple weeks ago and the vet tried to get me to go for surgery for tumour removal. I refused. They said them taking her tumour out wouldnt save her life so i didnt go with it. Guess they wanted another few thousand pounds that week to remove something that she wasnt going to recover from anyway. Sad.

Re- raw dog food. One thing I noticed (which I didn’t even think of at the time) when we switched our dogs to raw was their teeth (mostly my husky’s teeth). I guess because the food is softer and doesn’t really ‘rub’ the tooth as much as kibble they were much more dirty and need more brushing. This was super hard to do with my husky because well, he’s a husky and doesn’t want his teeth brushed, his nails clipped, his hair brushed … to be touched really lol so just keep that in mind!

I feed my dog venison and vegetables wild rice all cooked my dog has a collapsing trac so he had to have a very special diet and this has been his for over a year now and he is in perfect shape and his fur is healthy I would recommend to anyone
lets go Nala my Husky passed at 9 from Cancer....They are so amazing.
I have a 2 year old Siberian husky and we tried raw food with him from the get go and it did NOT work. He ate bits and pieces and would literally rather starve than eat it lmao. So we switched to just regular cooked whole food and he’s been hooked ever since. Definitely ask your vet about the percentages of carbs and protein and organs (although I will say some vets aren’t for raw food and probably will tell you not to even do it but it’s their opinion) anyway, we’ve been giving him a variation of the following type of meal each day and he’s perfectly healthy and a great weight for his age and stance. We do:
Base:
- 1 cup of lean protein
- 1 cup of plain white rice
- 1/2 cup of steamed veggies
- 1/2 or 1 cup of bone broth (you can buy this or make it if you’re boiling chicken already, we like the brand Brutus)
Toppings/enhancements:
- raw egg (with the shell and membrane if she will eat it, again, mine is super picky and won’t)
- big spoonful of plain Greek yogurt
- little bit of unsweetened applesauce
- freeze dried organ toppings (we like the brand Stella’s because they’re just the cleanest from what I’ve seen, raw organs are best obviously but mine doesn’t eat them because cause of the texture 😅)
- tbsp of local honey to help with allergies
- recommended serving of salmon oil (we like the native pet brand, we also use their daily powder which is just like a daily vitamin essentially for dogs)
- and then we like to either cook the meat or just sprinkle over some turmeric powder and just a dash of black pepper to help activate the turmeric benefits.

Hi there Christian :) We run a dog school since 8 years and the book that changed our view about our dogs diet and health is „The Forever Dog” by Rodney Habib and Dr. Karen Becker - i think you will find all the answers there ;) As for the diet change you should try 2 days on the dog foods then 1 day with 1 old meal and 1 new one/whole foods… after a while 1 day old meals and 1 day with 1 old meal and 1 new one… then you can try one day with all the meals to be the new ones/whole foods and see how it goes😉

spoke to an ER Vet recently and asked about whole food diets for dogs. She said she sees lots of dogs with issues on whole food diets. Her theory is that dogs have been domesticated for so long and have been eating "dog food" for so long that their bodies have adapted to this way of eating. Additionally, she said that there is consistency issues with companies provided whole foods...i.e you never know exactly what your dog is eating in what quantities.

Make your own dog food!. I make my dogs food under supervision from a vet to make sure she gets what she needs. Staples are pumpkin, turkey, liver, sardines, oats, spinach, fish oil, flax seeds, green beans, and multivitamin supplements. My dog was overweight and unhealthy when I adopted her at 7 years old and now she’s optimal weight at 10 years and the vet says she has blood work of a 2 year old 🎉

I am a huge fan of your content. In your video you were asking for some recommendations on switching Nala’s diet. I am a Licensed Veterinary Technician in the state of Michigan. Diets that I recommended are Hill’s science diet, Purina Pro Plan, Purina One, or Royal Canin. These diets are considered complete balanced diets that have research and science backing their food. However, if you really want to cook her food then check out this website balance.it which will help you create a complete balanced diet. Also I absolutely do not recommend a raw diet and neither does the American Animal Hospital Association.
