- Title pretty much sums it all up. This Chevy Cruze was offered to us for a cheap enough price we couldn’t turn it down. Now, it had about a dozen assorted codes stored in the PCM for everything from loss of BCM communication to purge solenoid circuits. There was excessive water in the pcm connectors and under hood fuse box. All of which had to be drained and dried out thoroughly. We also changed a handful of blown fuses most likely related to the short caused from water intrusion. We also replaced the thermostat housing, thermostat, coolant temperature sensor, oil, oil filter, upper thermostat quick connect line, antifreeze, ambient air temperature sensor, and battery. The tires were topped off with air, the fuel system got some cleaner ran through it. And then lastly the headlights readjusted to a correct level. I do believe this car is ready to go. I do have plans to replace the timing belt as it is coming due. But first we wanted to make sure the car would be reliable again. I think we did pretty good, even having to dump some money into it. And it looks pretty decent too! Thank you all for watching this excessively long video as it’s not my typical style but I hope it’s enjoyed either way.
One of the best looking modern sedans, the gen 1 models are so beautiful.
They needed a two door.
Don’t know why after the Cavalier GM could not make a decent compact. Great stuff as always, Jay!
The cavaliers were pretty damn good for a GM in the post 2000 world. The OHV 2.2 was gutless and yet dead reliable. They went to those “eco-tecs” with overhead cams and the cars just went to pot
The Cavalier was a safety death-trap in road collisions. The Cruze is probably safer. I have a S-10, it is also a death trap. I try to drive safe when I'm in it, but I like the truck.
The Cobalt was largely the same as the later Cavaliers (same engine and transmission in non-SS models). Only major flaw was the ignition switch. A friend of mine has an 09 and he's had it for several years. It's been hit several times (including a dent in the trunk from where some kids hit it with a water balloon from the 20th floor of a hi-rise apartment) and it's on it's 2nd transmission because the original owner never changed the fluid, but it runs well enough.
@@MXguy95the 2.2 ohc engine was notorious for head gaskets. The 2.2 ecotec was dead reliable. Owned two cavaliers with the 2.2 ecotec...both have over 300k miles on them, original engine and trans. Still running perfect. The ohc engine was gutless and junk. Mid 2002 through 2005 were the best cavaliers made. Best looking too. Especially the LS Sport coupes. That's what I had. Both 5 speeds. Man I love those cars.
@@bh2236it WAS caused by too much weight on keychains. Never put junk on your key rings. Car key and house key. Some rewards cards and that's it.
My cousin has a Cruze same year it’s been a really good little car has 220k miles
I'm a courier and I've had several of the Chevy equinoxes with the ecotec. And I put way over $200,000 mi on them with no problem .
I considered buying a Cruze once. I bought a Sentra instead. Wished i had bought that Cruze. .....anyway. Good job Jay!! 👍👍
Ide drive a 90s Sentra over this HEAP
@@xFactoryUSA Mine was a 2014 Sentra with the "lovely wonderful" CVT transmission.
@@davida.p.9911 At least your car didn’t randomly eat it’s own thermostat and leave you stranded under 30k lol
@@xFactoryUSA The A/C was giving me trouble, too. 😄 and when it's 100 outside, it's important.
Hope y’all are good jay good hearing from you again, we can all agree we don’t like cruises but even still if it runs an drives for a decent price I’ll take anything
I’d buy anything if it’s cheap enough, heck I might even buy a Nissan! 🤮. Hope your doing well buddy! Glad to see you still watching
@@MXguy95 dude your the realest no bull shit channel, not to mention y’all are fun to watch to, can’t wait till we break the 100k milestone, and when I was watching the oil change section you got lucky with that drain plug, a lot of them cruises came with a damn 10 mm screw that is softer than aluminum. And it strips and snaps with no effort at all, haven’t seen to many with the larger plug
@@MXguy95 Nissans aren't THAT bad. We own a 2014 Nissan Murano that is nearly a decade old and still going strong. Yes, the Murano is a CVT, which makes it worse.
Got rid of mines last year... Despite the plethora of freaking problems that it is known for. 😡 It's really good on gas. 👍🏾 That's just about it...
This thing seems to be very frugal on fuel. I do like that, and honestly the ride quality and wind noise is much better then I expected too. But I don’t expect this thing to last any long term duration. It’s still a modern FWD Chebby after all
I remember back in 2007, I brought Chevy Prizm made in 1998 the mileage was only 22.8K but the body has a sign of improper cheap repair. I took it to Asians mechanic in LA area and has it done regular maintenance and the car was outstanding performance with used junks parts from e-bay. The cost to repair was low and it took me anywhere without trouble.
Your videos are always entertaining and informative. Never boring! Keep up the great work. Take care.
Good find.Easy fixes.Good time fishing. What could be better?Nice safe car for Cody to commute in.Enjoy !
A decent transportation car that serves the purpose. Good find, Jay :)
I’ve never really been a fan of Chevrolets in general myself, hopefully this will make a great car for someone.
It’s bad ass Jay your still doing the CZcamss I come and check on ya every now and then being a traveler we always don’t get the best of services. It’s nice your channel is always consistent. And you didn’t sell out like everyone else I’ve watched over the years . I know lining your pockets is most important so if there was a money training pulling in somewhere and you had a chance to jump on it . I don’t blame ya. But I’m always happy to be around to support ya buddy . You should have way more views and a following .. hope all is well bud . 😊
Our 2012 has been a solid car so far.
This car is one of prettiest Daewoos ever made. Front resembles Nexia and Aveo hatchback (Gentra) a little bit.
I always thought the 1.8 was a good engine besides the timing belt. I really like Cruze’s they just don’t get taken care of by their owners.
The 1.8L engine are alright, it’s just the 1.4T you need to take extra care of.
@@applepoop10 The 1.4t is good. My mother owned a 2012 eco that didn't give her too many problems. The only thing she had to replace was the water pump. She had the car serviced from day one dealership.😊
General motors vehicles are the most likely after being purchased new to never be taken to the dealership and just repaired by anyone rigging things up. Japanese cars have those maintenance required lights. Ppl run to a professional and have it serviced. That's why it can appear that a Japanese car lasts... Simply bc it's well cared for.
Had 3, one new in 2012. Everyone of them, overheated, crumbled to pieces, cheap.
They are junk
Those are a pretty good little car. I bought one brand new in 2013 with 14 miles. It was a great car and will last if you don’t put cheap aftermarket/amazon parts on them
Jay, this video wasnt too long, I wish more of your videos were also this long! I watched the whole video! Looking forward to watching the timing belt service and whatever other updates you have on it!
Good car for a cheap price hope you are doing well!
Chevy Cruze... not a bad looking car, but soooo hit or miss. I knew a few people who bought them new. 1 had nothing but issues and always at the dealers. Other person raved and was all "best car EVA".
GREAT buy tho considering how expensive any car is now.
I have a 2018 Chevrolet Cruze RS LT and I really like mine. I mean it’s practically brand new but it’s a great little car.
Hey Jay I liked the vid! Nice to see some long form videos
I really like the looks of the later model Cruzes, but they have that stupid start stop tech. crap. Plus I worry about the cooling system problems with them. That is the one thing I hate about so many late model cars, they make them nice looking and you really want to buy one and then you read about all of the problems with them.
On the tranny, shift to L and with the up and down button, cycle it to L6 (if it has a six speed tranny. If eight speed, L8.). That will turn it off.
You'll have to do that every time whenever you put it in drive.
i ended up with a 6spd 1.4T cruze... 2 months into ownership already have PCV failure valve cover issues etc.. nightmare of a car lol. annnnd im financing it..... im screwed haha
We've got a 2013 Volvo XC60 with 120k miles with the same CAT code and we were told that it needs a new one for the low low cost of about 2k! Can't pass inspection with an emissions code and it's due next month. 🤦♂️
You are a good guy
😊
As far as your ground issue, there is a negative battery cable recall on these cars. I own a 2013 LTZ 1.4 with 45k.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with DexCool. My 2001 Silverado has never had a coolant issue, overheated or needed head gaskets or heater core. I just flushed the Cruze and put in New DexCool.
There were supposedly issues when Dex first came out. Anyone there has not been any reported Dex issues in years.
Dexcool might be the holy grail idk yet, I picked some up from autozone ran alot better after that.... just saying
At least for chevrolet cruzes late models.
Hope all is well brother 👍✌️
We are getting by, hope you are doing fine!
We have a ‘14 chevy cruze and we hate it. Only has 60,000 miles and has a bad coolant leak that the chevy dealership said they “couldn’t find”. Its has. The ignition coil rail fail several times apart from each replacement. Its turbo and it sucks at power. Always shifts weird during morning start ups. When the heat is on full blast the car kinda idles weird (up and down) for about 5 seconds. Im six foot 2 and had a very hard time getting in and out of it.
That's an electronically controlled thermostat. The coolant sensor is on the back of the housing.
beautiful and relaxing
I have got a 2015 Chevrolet Cruze 1.4 its been a great little car it seems to me that people abusey these cars and not do good maintenance on them mine has been great 100k and still running good but i dont drive it like I stole it either gets great gas mileage
I seem to remember that they had a big debut for this car on the show Glee. Does anyone else remember this?
Pity they were so bad they were and still are a very nice looking car 💁
The 1.8 is the engine to get if you buy one. Make sure you don’t buy a turbo model. Overall, it’s cheap transportation, but keep your expectations low.
Don't feel bad Jay, I'm a parts hoarder too! 🤣👍
Dang good deal fjr the price wish i
Find a deal like that here people want 2k for junk that needs a engine lol
That’s normally how it goes around here too. Car prices on complete sh!t boxes are stupid high
@@MXguy95 so true I mean you can't expect much for a car that low in price but put stupid crazy prices on cars guess the cheap car days are gone lol probably why I'm still driving my rust out grand am with over 200k lol
My gf claims she LOVED her Chevy Cruze, I read and heard lots of negative reviews. When I test drove one, it felt, looked and sounded cheaply made. It's a definite no, for me.
The h00min is considering buying one. Good to know it'll help him bring me moar fish.
I vote for forensic files at work in the background lol
FF is alright, I like Monk! But my favorite is Perry mason, Matlock or heat of the night
Amazing video, found a 2009 chevrolet cruze with a cracked engine wall for 1500$ with a 1.6L engine. Might be too much to fix the thing
Great video Jay!
5w30 and 10w30 are going to essentially be the same once up to operating temp, You really should go for a 10w40 or 5w40 if you want to have a thicker oil at operating temp.
I see the Acura is back!
Jay hates every car. Ive been working on cars for almost 15 years, and sold cars for 14 years and i only hate VW and Chrysler products. I have a 13 Cruze LTZ RS 1.4 Turbo with 203k miles and its phenomenal. Runs and shifts excellent. Fixed all the usual issues. The 1.8s suck because they run a timing belt and are absolutely gutless. I love the Cruze, have since it came out. Theres a reason they are everywhere on the road still
We just had to do the interior bushing on our older ford focus 😂😅
I worked on one for my Roommates daughter-in-law. Her boyfriend had Driven it through An intersection with standing water during a rainstorm And it died. Upon trying to restart it the starter wouldn't turn the engine over, So I was asked To check and change the starter if Necessary. I'm embarrassed To say that it took me Over 3 days to figure out that It was hydrolocked. The Intake it's right in front of the front Tire, two inches off the ground! Almost Any Amount of Standing water Would get sucked up into the motor. I like the way these cars look, And probably good on gas But don't Drive it when it's raining lol🫠
That’s a 1.8; and it has the thermostat assembly that ROYALLY pisses me off! If you were to buy the that thermostat at the GM Dealer parts counter it would cost you about $185; THE SAME GODDAMN PART with only a different part number for a 2009-2011 Aveo is DOUBLE THE PRICE at $360!
I buy them off Amazon for a fraction of that price. The aluminum and plastic ones will interchange too, I think this one cost around $38 for the entire assembly, gaskets, new sensors and thermostat installed and shipped.
A friend of mine bought an LTZ trim brand new in 2014. It was at the dealer monthly for warranty repairs and it was a very frustrating ownership experience.
Overall as a GM vehicle they're not too bad if you get the non-turbo engines. Bonus for manual transmission. A guy at my work actually had a turbo Cruze around the same year and changed the oil religiously at 3,000 miles. He made it to 120k without any issues, ever. The problems with these cars stem from sludge because the people who buy these cars never do maintenance.
@@NGGPeter The problem is vehicle reliability is measured if a vehicle goes 200,000 miles these days without major problems. 120k is still low miles.
That’s weird yours has a big engine drain plug. I have a 2014 Cruze with the 1.8L and the engine oil drain plug is a little 10mm instead of the bigger one you have.
I remember when these were the car that was supposed to somehow “save” GM… I will never forget the time I rented a brand-new 2002 Cavalier - what a pile that car was… but it did seem like a good, honest car for better or worse.
The cavalier had no frills after the ending of the v6 optioned z24s in the early 90s. These plastic filled and rattling 4 cylinder cars are junk from the get go. But…. It was cheap
My sister had one as a daily driver with a little over 300k she sold it still running to a car parts pick n pull and bought a Tahoe
@@crowdnine878 yeah, I don’t think reliability was the issue - but comfort, handling, and body integrity were not their strong pointd
Does Cody like his $1,000 Chevy 2014 Cruze jay?!
So complicaded these cars today.... 80's and older for me.
When the new Chevrolet Cruze launched in 2011, General Motors went into a crazy advertising blitz claiming this is the first car rated more reliable than Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic. They failed miserably on that and gave up by 2015. Today, General Motors is retrying this again with the all-new 2024 Trax made in Korea with Japanese-like quality, replacement of the Cruze, claiming to be more-reliable than Toyota and Honda again.
You can't just release a new car and claim it's more reliable than a car that's proven its longevity over several decades.
@@benchattin New 2024 Trax was descended from the 1971 Vega. Then 1980 Citation, then 1982 Cavalier, then 2005 Colbalt, then 2011 Cruze, and now 2024 Trax today. Each new model replaced is more reliable than the previous.
@@waltchan In what way is it descended? Because they're all small?
@@666cemetaryslutThat's the complete list of all the affordable Chevrolet vehicles since 1971 Vega, all part of the American Dream for middle-class families.
You don’t seem to be doing as many videos as you used to. I miss the will it run clips
Nice Acura.
No thanks I'll just keep my 2013 Corolla for my gas sipper which is my love.
I still love your content thanks a bunch
whats geting sad is older cars and trucks part were ones someone was putting parts in plan to get back on road then something happens now everyone one was more now for older stuff i like them all fact is newer stuff so out sourced its no quilty yet lot same manufacters sale same drive train for example is new process np 261/263/246 all junk
old junk toyoda junk same made design 5.7 4.8 4.7 just number its the interior vs comfort vs dependabilty drive ablity add in try to repair something got remove ten parts to do it
When these roll into the shop, mechanics start running. Absolute junk after about 75k or earlier. Like another commenter said GM hasn't made a good compact since the Cavalier
It's getting hot outside now Jay... just sayin..:-D
I have a 2014 Cruze with the 1.8L. I recently disconnected the battery to clean the throttle body and I can’t seem to get the evap and egr monitors to reset so I can get a state inspection.
Check your fuses in the under hood fuse box. And check the ground wires mentioned.
@@MXguy95 I checked the fuses under the hood and inside the car as well and didn’t find any blown fuses. I will have to check the grounds and see if any are loose possibly.
Who did you get your rebuilt transmission for Clifford the red dirty dodge Jay sir?!
does the 1.8 have all of the cooling system problems that the 1.4 turbo has?
What happened to the salvage yard you were running
The cruze...cavalier replacement. I bet you like the type 10 hatch better than the cruze
Absolutely love my cavalier hatch. She’s sat all winter, and I know there’s a fuel leak I need to address before I start summer driving again.
@@MXguy95 I just recently was gifted a type 10 hatch model kit. I want to build it in a similar way as yours, is it possible to get you to make a sort of walk-around or overview video of it?
I’d take this over any Toyota or Honda compact car. With care nothing will go wrong besides whatever electrical issues you found. Seemed small to
Me . Change the oil every 3-5k and transmission fluid every 30-40k , coolant changes etc etc and it will be fine. Better looking than any Toyota or
Honda compact of these years.
These Cruze are handsome. But the Cruze mechanical horror stories frightened me off.
Friends don’t let friends buy Chevy cruzes Steve. I can’t let you do that. Stay away! Haha
@@MXguy95 I own a Citation, that's plenty. I am still scarred from owning an E46 BMW.
Is that a Cruze without cruise?
Everyone in this comment section has memory holed the Aveo, i don't know why it was more reliable than these.
Maybe that's why you think cruzes are no good,, you're supposed to do some research before you touch the vehicle...
That's not a temp sensor, it's a thermostat heater..
Chevy Cruz. Yuk. $1k and she runs good? Sign me up!!! I'll take 2.
I'll stick with my 2014 Honda Accord with 50,000 miles on the clock.Same color as that Cruise.
pmsl@this guy
Thats Opel engine right
You might as well buy an Audi A3 and look wayyy cooler when you break down
it's like cavalier. kinda small for family car. i like grand cherokee.
Cruze...Piece of Shyte 😢
Corolla...Piece of Work! 😄
I forget that these are just as bad as the Focus' with the DCT from the same period lol
