Excellent video, thank you
I’m glad you liked it thank you for tuning in! 🙏🏽 🪴 🍁
Good stuff as always brother!
I appreciate it! Thanks for watching, and comments are very helpful in growing my channel!! 🙏🏽 🪴 🍁
Practicing certain techniques on less quality material to get a better understanding and feel for the technique is something that I wish I would’ve done. I’m 1 for 2 on air layers on Japanese maples……. Both had great potential, now only one does. I have a few more great air layer projects on the horizon but I’m gonna practice this yr on a few “less quality” trees. Then next yr attempt it on my “quality” stock.
THANK YOU, Acer P Bonsai!! Another great informative and inspiring video! Keep them videos coming, friend!!!
Thanks buddy! Juice them with ferts this year so they are brimming with strength next year!! 🙏🏽 🪴 🍁
Im a total beginner but your instructions are clear so maybe I can make a bonsai too
That sounds like a great idea! 🤩 🪴 🍁

Can you recommend a good introductory book or channel or website? I have no idea what an ‘approach graft’ is and I figure covering some of the basics would help me better enjoy your channel and know what you’re doing.
Hey thanks for the feedback. I definitely need to continue building out my video library with more technique videos. Until I get the chance to make a specific approach graft video, you can watch the video where I do a root graft. It is the same process, except instead of attaching a little seedling at the root base, you bend a branch around and attach it to the side of the trunk.
The most comprehensive book on Japanese maples is by Andrea Meriggioli “Bonsai Maples” and he also has a CZcams channel “Hiryu-en Bonsai ENG” for English speakers. He also has an Italian version.
I really do appreciate the feedback and I want to make my content accessible to everyone.

Bonsai Maples by A. Meriggioli is indeed a GREAT book for maple info!! Full of bonsai specific info and techniques on Japanese maples. His channel "Hiryu-en Bonsai" is fun and inspiring to watch, but is mostly focused on "high end" bonsais......... basic techniques are used there, just not always explained as in depth as Acer P. Bonsai does. In my humble opinion, stick to this channel or maybe "Heron's Bonsai", "Growing Bonsai by Jelle", "Xavier"s Bonsai Retreat", "Nigels Saunders the bonsai zone", and "American Bonsai Association" are all solid channels for bonsai videos.........BUT there are MANY many more great channels, but in my humble opinion these are quality informative channels, ones to trust.
Peter is great for intro level information and propagation techniques. I don’t see much on later stage refinement, but most of us in the U.S. don’t have final stage trees anyway. A great place to start, and one of my favorite channels when I was starting back in 2021. 👏🏽 🪴 🍁
yeh bonsai requires a lot of trying so you learn the most
There’s only so much you can learn from reading and watching. Thanks for tuning in! 🙏🏽 🪴 🍁
Every tree in its lifetime will eventually start to rot...will become hollow in areas throughout but wont kill the tree. Maybe over reacted?
It's all about what you're going for. That may be true in older/ancient trees but this is still a young tree and I assume he doesn't want the vigor to be impaired yet as there is still a way to go development-wise. Just a thought though....to each their own
You are correct about old trees always rotting, but that’s an entirely different situation than Japanese maple bonsai. Rot like this is a fungal infection that can spread through the tree and kill it. It might not have killed the tree, but it could have, or possibly rotted farther up into the apex, damaging the base of the area I already had the plan of air layering.
Although I’ve seen a few really nice Japanese maple bonsai with deadwood (Bonsai Steve has a great Seigen), traditionally we want to develop maple bonsai without deadwood. I may build a maple with deadwood in the future, but for this tree, I’m trying to move forward with my plan to build two semi traditional trees out of it.
I really do appreciate your feedback. I’ll try to improve my discussion in future videos on my thought process for the work. 🙏🏽 🪴 🍁
