    As fall weather rolls in, the farm is changing, and how we manage it has to adapt too. Cooler weather means less growth in the summer flowers, so I need to be careful how I pick over the upcoming weeks. And it will only be so long till frost comes, and ends the 2023 season. Which is starting to feel like a good thing...

    I love that you repeat the name of the flower while you talk about it. I wouldn’t mind seeing the names onscreen. Sometimes people will flash the name and I never have enough time to read it before it’s gone again. Thank you!

      I usually try to do that when I'm doing unboxings and seed stuff, but it adds like 8 hours to the editing, lol, and Ian won't do it, so I'm not ready to commit to titles for the farm tours. For a quick fix, you could try turning on the CC on your youtube. I usually have mine on, and I find it does a really good job of catching the correct words. And then you can pause the video to take notes. Which helps me get the names of stuff when I'm looking for it myself

    Planting garlic, chives, leeks, catnip, fennel, dill and cilantro will help repel aphids. Marigolds are also known to drive away a number of unwanted pests. Research good companion plants for these garden additions and place them wisely, they can help a lot

But I'm still crunching numbers - they are actually pretty costly to make, and I'm not sure if I'm making money with selling them for $20. When you talk about cost, time management, etc., it would seem to me to be more efficient and prudent with your money to order plugs for the week you want to grow them out. Now is the time for bulk order discounts and you can choose the week you want them delivered. As a home grower, I'm ordering all my perennials and getting them at an average price of $1.82 each including shipping. You can get your annuals, too. I figured out the cost of soil, perlite, vermiculite, peat moss, water, electric, and my time. I decided it was worth it. God Bless and have a wonderful holiday season! I presume you're doing your Christmas show, so I wish you a sell out!

I never thought about it in the statice before, but others were saying that the same thing on their farm was asters yellow. Do pussy willows grow well in your area? I know there are cultivars that are black and pink. They’re great in spring bouquets and always a good accent in dried flower arrangements. Or are they just so common that no one would be interested in them? Cattails are a great accent in a bouquet as well. The pencil cattails are especially nice in fall arrangements. However, they like wet conditions which I know you don’t have. Pity you don’t have a little stream running through your property. Looking forward to your Thanksgiving bouquets. I wonder if that is what os going on with my zinnias?!? I've beek having sn issue this year with my zinnias only lasting about 2 days before turning brown & ugly... i havent seen the brown spotd yet, but my zinnias do get downy mildew & powdery mildew every year. So i wonder if it's in the soil, causing the symptoms, bit jist hasnt affected the foliage yet. Zinnias are like my main focal flower/money maker, & I hadn't gotten sooooo discouraged because I'm like if this is going to be an every year thing- "am I going to be able to have a profitabpe business? "

    • @YouCantEatTheGrass
      @YouCantEatTheGrass  Před 9 měsíci +1

      The more I crunch the numbers, the less profitable zinnias seem. They are just so delicate and fussy. It's nice that they are so simple, but as I figure out more crops, I'm less focused on them being my main focal.
      One thing to consider, because I don't see this talked about often, but I've definitely seen a correlation. If you have a water softener - the salt that it adds to the water zaps zinnias (also rudbeckia). Not very many crops react in the same way, but the softened water will kill a zinnia in 2-3 days, and in that black crispy way, similar to the look of downy mildew

    Plant 40 crops. 20 will fail, but 20 will succeed. Put your eggs 🥚 in 40 baskets 🧺

      I'm definitely thinking more about planting for cool weather and hot weather at the same time, so 1 can fail and 1 can thrive, but at least there is something with the crazy weather

      The sedum? It will bunch up, but that's a good thing. Most perennials enjoy being divided after 5 years.

      I made a video 2 years ago going over all the things that I dry and what does well, and what is a little more borderline. But I might make another version of it again this winter, since we do some stuff a little differently now

    OMG are you saying I can leave my glads in my raised beds, me being in Ottawa with lots of snow? I usually throw a tarp over my beds to keep animals off, will they come back on their own?

    • @kelleyforeman
      @kelleyforeman Před 9 měsíci

      It depends on the glad! There are winter hardy varieties for your zone, but most are not.

      I'm going to bring my crates inside my garage so they won't freeze. But, if you did a deep mulch, there is a chance they might make it. Raised beds tend to get colder then the ground though, so that might make them like a zone lower for winter hadiness

      They make a video about this every winter. Let’s wait and see :-). I feel like sales are being good with some hick ups but they do have an employee this year so the calculation considering profit will be more tricky this year.

    • @YouCantEatTheGrass
      @YouCantEatTheGrass  Před 9 měsíci

      I think we just hit sales similar to last year, and we are still talking about doing winter greenery at the stand, plus Christmas ornaments, ect. So I'm surprisingly happy with sales - we might even hit 70k!
      But, I'm also spending a lot this year - we have 20k going out of the bank this month with peonies and bulbs coming, plus all the other spending, plus employee costs. I'm hopeful it's a positive number, but it might be in the single digits, lol. We will do a breakdown in January

    Understandable that you and the gardens are tired! Rest will be needed for everyone. As far as the sedums...they do not want or need fertilizer and need no or VERY little water. In fact they do better in poor soils with good drainage. Just a tip that I've learned from trial and error.

    • @YouCantEatTheGrass
      @YouCantEatTheGrass  Před 9 měsíci +1

      I have the poor soil and drainage, lol, but I think they got too much water this year. I'm planning of planting 4 whole beds next year, and I'm going to make sure they are on their own irrigation zone, so I can really limit the water

    • @jgg7377
      @jgg7377 Před 9 měsíci

      Did you know sedums root easily. Just cut off a stem and stick it in the ground and next year it will grow to be a whole new plant. I cut a bunch of mine off because they flopped too the ground and stuck them in a watering can and within a week they all had roots growing out everywhere. Soo easy!

    Will never understand why these two need two individuals to create their videos. One holding the camera and the other doing the talking.I would say 99% of the flower growers on CZcams do just fine with one person creating the videos. Then almost every single week these two complain of not having enough time to create bouquets for the market. Time management please Ian and Serena. Geez.
