- It is one of the most memorable shots in Masters history, as Tiger Woods makes a near impossible shot on Hole No. 16 on his way to the 2005 Masters Green Jacket. #theMasters
---
Since 1934, the Masters Tournament has been home to some of golf’s greatest moments. Amidst blooming azaleas, towering pines and flowering dogwoods, the first full week of April ushers in a stage unique to golf and to sport. Over four days and 72 holes, the smallest field in major championship golf competes for a chance to capture the Green Jacket and a place in Masters history.

The zoom-in on the ball was worth $20M in advertising for Nike.
it pays dividends to this day
As a guy that plays Nike there is nothing like seeing the Nike ball on the ground.
Add a zero to that number I think
Try a billion.
I still remember seeing those commercials all the time
This will never get old.
Nope.
Still makes me smile every time I see it.
who were the commentators?
Lanny Wadkins was the color man and I'm pretty sure the tower announcer on 16 was Verne Lundquist @@stewartcurtin9590
@@stewartcurtin9590 The legendary Verne Lundquist with the iconic, "OH, WOW!!!"
I’m a simple man. I see the official Masters YT channel posted the Tiger chip from 16 that I’ve watched hundreds of times, but I click and watch anyway.
The mastery of that shot never gets old.
“in your LIFE have you seen anything like that?” is the best call of any sport ever.
This call or the Miracle on ice “do you believe in miracles? Yes!” Are the 2 greatest in history. IMO.
@@ddsara6566 "And the band is on the field!" is pretty great too
Pure Vern.
Miracle and this call from Verne. Those are 1 and 1a. Debatable for best without a doubt.
"a win for the ages"
Still goosebumps watching this. One of, if not the greatest shots in the history of golf.
And the greatest call!
the greatest..last round of a major...final 3 holes. Iconic
@@backstreets76 Add the Nike logo finish just before it dropped. The executives must've been high fiving all over the place.
@@backstreets76 amazing shot, but followed it up with back to back bogeys to round out final three holes
@@BazookaJoe131313 He did but all's well that ends well.
I’ve been watching this on such low quality video for so long. It’s so refreshing and incredible to see it full HD.
Wouldn't call it full HD, but still way better than every other video of this on youtube.
The full 4th round replay is on CZcams for nearly 4 years now and it is 1080P. Official Masters Channel.
@@trimmoos - Just because it is played at 1080P does not mean it is HD (it's upscaled, shallow color, and low bitrate). The clip is no better than the full round video you reference, and neither is in decent HD. It looks like typical low-bitrate live footage common for the cameras and production equipment employed at the time.
@@TazTalksYouListen it aint that deep bro
Unbelievable. Greatest shot in history. That last rotation for the ball to drop is truly poetic and something out of a movie
Exactly 💯
This is one of, if not the greatest golf shot ever shown on television. Had Tiger not made this shot, he wouldn’t have gone on to win. That’s what makes this shot legendary. Growing up during those years was awesome!
If he hadn't made that shot, he would have played 17 and 18 differently.
Absolutely! Life was happy then. NOTHING like today. I feel bad for the younger generation.
Chris DiMarco could have won
Still get chills everytime.
I was gonna say the same thing. I remember watching it live just absolutely insane
Far and away the best individual TV highlight of anything that has ever happened in golf ever. The talk of how hard it is, the full extension camera zoom, the crowd freaking out both when the ball doesn’t fall in and then when it does. “Oh my goodness - oh wow!” You throw the Nike logo on that and it’s an an award winning Nike ad, or reshoot it and it’s the key scene from a movie. Just perfect.
I just noticed the fringe behind the ball makes this shot 10x harder than it already is
Same here. This is the first time I noticed that.
0:38 they literally say it here lol
Tigers insane
It's not the fringe, it's the short rough, or second cut. The fringe starts where the green ends and then meets the second cut.
Came to say this lol forces you to come in steep on the ball. Insane.
watched this shot at least 1000 times... will watch 1000 times more
“In your life, have you seen anything like that!”
Vern Lundquist
One of the absolute most iconic moments in sports history. Like Jordan hitting the cross over three vs the Jazz, or Jeter’s quick flip at home plate, etc.
American sports history I guess you mean.
Listen….. you’re soooo right. But being an A’s fan.. that Jeter flip hurt. But it changed sports, cuz I play SS and after that if there was a cut home like that we would be right there lol
I was there! Right next to the big pine tree. What a moment I’ll never forget.
Watched it live and 100 times since and just watched it another 4 times. My kids dont understand what a true sports phenomenon is...this shot was Tiger in all his glory. We just expected this to happen every weekend and many times it actually happened! What a treat it was to watch him play!
Congratulations on your career and thank you for being the best play by play caller the Masters has ever heard. We'll miss your golden throat Mr. Verne Lindquist. Here's to you ⛳
Hear! Hear!
The reactions from the crowd makes it even better
Just listen to the gallery after he hit the chip. Respectable silence that builds to some cheering and eventually a roar when it drops. THIS is why The Masters is so special. It is pure. It is honest. It is the way golf was always meant to be. It is the complete opposite of Phoenix and their drunk frat boy tournament. Please never change, Augusta National.
💯
Thank you for such an iconic call Verne, and for the many wonderful memories at the masters we’ve been privileged to have. Golfs been better with your voice in it and we will all miss you greatly. Happy retirement Verne.
Well said!!!!!
Finally we can watch one of the greatest golf shots of all time in HD!
It's hard to find the right superlative for how *incredible* this moment was.
I’ve seen many great shots from many great players. That being said, this has been my pick as the greatest shot in golf history for almost 20 years. I will never not play this video when I see it posted anywhere. So stoked for April!
Beautiful. I remember watching it live back home in Scotland and applauding wildly at the tv 💛
I think this still may be my favorite golf shot of all time
After countless viewings of this shot, it still brings tears to my eyes.
Me too. First his ability to shut out all those people watching him. Second, the way he sees the shot, looking at where it will break, how much speed it needs. And lastly, the physical execution of the shot and the ball hanging on the lip, toying with us, then dropping in. The drama of the whole thing is better than any movie ever made. Tiger man, Tiger.
The way DiMarco just stops walking as the ball starts tracking always gets me. He just knew.
Great call…I’d love to know what CDM actually thought when this went in…in the few glimpses of him in this clip could not help but feel like he was all alone out there.
He woulda had him if he didn't birdie that hole. Even with that birdie, he pushed Tiger to a playoff.
@@bengaltiger96 I don't think Tiger woulda gone back to back bogies had he not made that tho. He always did what he needed back then.
@@andrewd3737 DeMarco did say he was surprised that the first playoff hole was 18. They typically started on 10 but for some reason they chose 18, which Chris felt was an advantage to Tiger in the way he can bend his 3-wood around the corner.
This was my first Masters watching in HD. I know now this doesn't seems like a big deal, but back then it was incredible. This was such a huge turn of events in the entire tournament.
I’m so happy I watched this live with my father. I’ve never seen him jump out of his chair, he did for this.
Same man! Great memories watching Tiger with Dad!
Goosebumps everytime I watch this.
So incredible to do that under pressure!
No matter what, Tiger gave us that moment. Simply amazing.
This shot by Tiger NEVER gets old. A true master at work.
The most iconic shot and call in golf history. Tiger and Verne caught lightning in a bottle for this moment in time. I can watch this until the end of my life.
I watch this once a week
Greatest moment in pro golf history. It has everything. Such an unbelievable shot.
Tiger made golf electrifying and accessible. I don't care how many majors he wins or doesn't win. He gives 10 tons back to children in the sport and always has. Plus the iconic indelible memories.
The GOAT.
Perhaps the greatest Masters moment of all time. Maybe even the greatest golf moment of all time.
I could watch that ball drop in that hole every day for the rest of my life and it would never get old.
Love the commentary before he takes it, just explaining how difficult it is and giving him no hope of getting it close 😂
Year after year, I can't get enough of this shot!
All these years later after watching this live on tv and I’m still convinced the crowds “oooooo” made this ball go in.
Yeah. Poor ball was blissfully ignorant of its role there.
Greatest moment in the history of sports
Thank you so much, Vern. Much love and respect.
Watching tiger working out where to chip it is magical ❤
I've watched this 1000 times and still amazing
I watched this live as it happened and I’ll never forget it!
I watched this 10 times in a row. Most dramatic shot I've seen.
I had this saved on my tivo for years... so glad its preserved forever
The great Verne Lundquist retires today after a storied 40 year career and this is my favourite call of his. Came here to say thanks for this iconic call on an iconic shot 19 years ago.
Can you just imagine being in that crowd, electric!!
Greatest shot of all time.
Probably the most Iconic shot in golf history. For sure of Tigers career. I was watching it live, with my mom like we did whenever Tiger played, but this is the one shot we always talk about. Sending her this clip now. 😊
*NEVER. GETS. OLD*
My dad and I saw this live on TV. He kept saying “It’s gonna fall short, it’s gonna fall short…” and then when it dropped in we were both so excited? And he told me right then and there that it would be replayed for a long time on all of those “best sports plays of all time” compilations
Yes, the shot is one of the most iconic and amazing shots of all time. But man, looking at the crowd. Seeing all the high fives amongst the people there…….a special moment indeed. A reminder of how this game can bring so many together and create unforgettable memories. Beautiful!
Big Cat in his prime was AMAZING! One of the greatest short games ever!
If that doesn't give you chilly bumps. One of the best shots ever, & just that Tiger Roar unreal.
Such a perfect moment. You couldn't script it better.
I watched this live and jumped in the air as that ball fell in.
If there is ever going to be a more perfect golf shot in the future… I wanna see it because this had it all. Masters 2024 starts in a couple hours can’t wait!
What an Iconic moment Never gets old too see
This is why I started watching golf ❤
...
Still remember watching this live and still get chills from it!
Still gives me goosebumps!
Vern Lundquist’s call of that whole shot, is what really made that moment at the Masters one of the top ten most incredible golf shots of all time.
The 2024 Masters will be Verne Lundquists final Masters as a broadcaster
Dude jump started golf, absolute sports legend! That shot alone, defines his legacy!! Love it, makes me want to go play 18 now
Nike’s greatest ad
Brilliant, I remember watching it on TV when I was a kid. It used to be free to watch.
One of the most iconic shots in golf ever! ⛳️👍
Special mention to the camera man, great shot too ! And a great call by Verne Lundquist !
The spectators/patrons at the Masters are just the best, nothing like the roar of a crowd down the fairways from the guy they're showing on the tv let us knew someone did something special somewhere and we'll see it very soon
That is the greatest shot in Tiger's career. He has other great shots before but this one tops all. Great camera work too!
Incredible. I remember watching that.
Watched it live on TV from Ireland. Will never forget
Best shot ever!!
Greatest golf putt and Nike Advertisement ever!!!
One of the greatest sports moments ever. Remember it like it was yesterday.
Goosebumps.
I’m starting to feel old. This was back in 2005, next year will be 20 years since it happened. I still remember watching this as a kid!
Unbelievable!
As the definition of a Tiger fan, I still feel bad for Chris. I mean he almost chipped in on 18. He could have won, just wasn’t fortunate enough as Tiger. What a classic Tiger moment for that to hang on the edge and go in!
For anyone who hasn’t played on some of these championship courses the cameras do them no justice. The gradients of the hills and the all the twists and turns are crazy in person.
Probably the best golf shot I've ever seen.
Best shot I've ever seen!
The amount of times I’ve watch this should be illegal ❤
This is why I love sports... Simply Magic
Great shot great call!
I loved watching golf back then...
Probably the single best golf shot of all time. He had to make this shot but there's no way, right? Then the chip as you watch it skid on the green and slow down to the perfect position before the roll downhill to the hole and then...there's no way that will go in...wait, will it!? Then stopping just short of the hole with the brief disappointment that it was SO CLOSE... followed by the dramatic pause as it finally dropped in...There's NO WAY that just happened! Everything came together to make for the most "edge of your seat" golf shot that I've ever seen. Watching this again and again never gets tiring
🐐 shot from the 🐐
The best advertising ever for Nike.
So thankful to have lived and watched every single Tiger tournament since he’s been a pro. Got to see him live win the PGA in 99, at the Ryder Cup, and another PGA. Just an all time memory this was like so many others. This may be the greatest call of Vernes career. Enjoy retirement Verne.
The imagination to try this shot is incredible. I just loved that era of golf when Tiger was roaring.
Best video on CZcams. GOAT. GOAT. GOAT!!!
Nicklaus Is goat!!!!!... sorry...
The worst high five and the best golf shot at the same time😂
I remember yelling "GETTTT INNNNN" when it was resting on the lip. Right at the exact moment of my last N it fell. You're welcome Tiger.
This may be one of the most overlooked best sports commentary moments of all time.
Still gives me chills.
My first time really watching this shot . Not much a golf fan but Tiger is the 🐐. Man that was amazing.
'The Shot". 🔥🔥🔥🙌🐐
This to me the greatest shot in the history of golf. Never been replicated since. And to pull it off during the final round of a major that subsequently lands you a green jacket, will be talked about for centuries.
