    The big question for me is how the 2 expansion mix with Uprising. I’ve got both, have ‘em mixed in and really enjoy what they add to OG Dune. BUT I can see them not being as optimized for Uprising . A follow up video would be very much appreciated that discusses how the 2 expansions work (pros/cons) and what the comparison is like for OG Dune with expansion vs. Uprising with expansions.

    Please do a video/"review" about how well the game works with the expansions. Because it sounds better than the original box but i really want to know if it's better than original box+exp 1/2!

      Just read the rule book. It seems a bit fiddle to include the expansions, but it's not as bad as I expected. Gameplay wise I'm also interested and can't wait to try it on TTS. Not so sure I will buy the game as I'm not to happy with the whole practice around this game.

    • @DanielDCotta
      @DanielDCotta Před 9 měsíci +4

      This is an expansion that includes everything needed to play (hence the reason for calling this a standalone expansion).
      It can be integrated with the base game and all previous expansions.
      The duplicate content is quite minimal (starting 10 card player deck, player cubes, resources, 4x alliances, worm starting token) and having a separate SKU for this might be just as costly to players due to losing the discount of manufacturing in bulk.

  • @imanujakku

    I think the online community has influenced this version. The TTS crowd played the ever loving crap out of the original and expansions in very short period of time and direwolf is very in tune with their feedback. In some ways this services the dune addicts who play in the huge online tournaments more than the casuals who happen to have dune on their shelf.

    Nice job Roy! I too am a proponent of upgrade packs for owners of a base game, however, in this instance I feel like the Uprising stand alone has so much new stuff it does not make sense to offer one. Other than the basic resources, agents, cubes and few other minor pieces, the entire game is new. I am happy that Rise of IX and Immortality are compatable plus my Dune Imperium Deluxe upgrade works as well.

    Just a weird product in my eyes. It feels like it comes to early in the life cycle of Dune Imperium, although I understand it from a financial perspective.
    From reading the rules and watching some videos I don't really feel like this is a big enough improvement as it stands. But I would love to be wrong here and will definitely try it on TTS.

    I already have Dune Imperium, both expansions, plus the premium components. It's one of my favorite games, but I probably won't pick this one up unless I snag it on the cheap months down the road. But I'm still not sure it's necessary, it's kind of just a remix of the first game without bringing anything new of consequence.

    • @arthurdent9281

    I didn't buy DI, because my game group already has a copy of it. but I think this one has some interesting changes (improvements???) and additions. Being able to mix in some of the original game in is also a plus in my book. Thanks for doing this comparison. I think it was needed because I probably would have just ignored DI: Uprising as just another expansion pack
    A Cash Grab? Maybe. Was Twilight Imperium 4 a cash grab? Same principle, really. Take a game, change some of the mechanics, add some new features and call it a day.

    Most importantly thanks for doing an amazing and thorough overview Roy!
    I hate to add to the fire in the comments- DI is one of my favorite games of all time but this game looks amazing and even better in almost everyway but lack of acknowledgment from Dire Wolf to the address the easy solution of upgrade pack which other games have done a number of times has really upset me. Not to mention that the last expansion has been out for less than a year. We want people to innovate - yet the lack of recognition for a 1.5 is quite brothersome. To clarify, I love my well loved copy - I have played nearly 50 times and it doesn't diminish my love or admiration for everything so far. Yet asking for a full game price when it could easily reduce waste, cost and frustration with an upgraded pack- a replacement board, cards, and a few other components as an option for previous fans is beyond me. I will definitely pick up Uprising second hand for a reduced price but I am not supporting this behavior of companies directly.

    • @AleksandarDaGr8
      @AleksandarDaGr8 Před 10 měsíci +5

      I just dont even think an upgrade pack would be much cheaper though. Like its basically just the wooden cubes and a few card board tokens that are duplicated no? I understand the sentiment but would a $50 upgrade pack make that much of a difference?

    • @nathansutterfield
      @nathansutterfield Před 10 měsíci

      @@AleksandarDaGr8 that is a fair point- but I think it would. $ 40 or even $45 - I think would be fair and most importantly acknowledgment to people and fans who already put some money into it. And again the later point is the most important, recognition and communication means alot- just putting a product especially a 1.5 matters - I think you can see that with all of the comments. But thanks for reading my comment- always happy to discuss.

    It should also be worth mentioning that the designers wanted a way to design an expansion that built on what they have learned of the game after several years of people playing it without creating more complexity to the already growingky hefty game. The obvious way to answer that is to redesign the game from the ground up and make the same game with notable improvements offering an alternative way to play.

    I understand the comments below about “cash grab” - but I think someone else nailed it. For some game groups Dune Imp has become a “lifestyle” game and rather than playing a lot of different games they play this one with expansions. This module add with six players, and variants allows the lifestyle gamers to delve deeper into their game expierence. For others they can choose which to get, or not get the new one. Just replayed the OG before seeing the movie tomorrow. It is an awesome game and I am not missing the new one at all. But I understand where folks who play it every week want more of the same but a little different, meanwhile my game group may choose to move on play some Earth or Heat or something, and get this out a few times a year. It does seem they provided a different experience for a certain type of gamer who had some issues with some of the board spaces.

We play DI and I really enjoyed it, but I don't need to get a whole new version of essentially the same game. I know that there are improvements and modifications to this one to make it "better" but as a casual player of DI I don't need any of that. As others have said, if there was an update pack or something along those lines then sure, but right now it just feels like they're trying to milk Dune and don't really care if they screw over owners of DI in the process.

    I have DI with both expansions, the deluxe upgrade box, and all promos. I also preordered Uprising. Am i annoyed? Yes. But i understand the designer needs to iterate. Another expansion to the base game would have overbloated it. Let's be honest, Uprising is a direct replacement to DI. You can Frankenstein a copy of both games but it was not the designer's original intention for Uprising and any effort to do so is just to appease the folks who have DI. Uprising is a stand-alone improvement to DI taking into account almost 3 years of feedback with significant tournament/competitive play. I'm assuming the expansions for DI won't integrate seamlessly with Uprising and expect expansions for Uprising in the future.
    I want to sell DI but the only problem is that I threw away the base box and have everything in the deluxe box. Maybe i'll put it in the Uprising box and give it away.

    Smuggler's Heaven seems broken AF. A field that gives 4 spice with an effect that gives 4 spice? Sure, 3 water, but that is a super easy resource mill for VP - and it gives you water access through Spacing Guild icon. Broken OP card.
    6 player mode really feels to me like a tack-on. It is so niche I'm not sure how much of a wasted resource that is. Nothing wrong with people enjoying it, though.

      Mindless completionists and people who haven't jumped in will love this...but loyal customers who have bought everything are understandably annoyed right now.
      Dominion/Unmatched expansions enhance everything else you already own...and even when Dominion finally came out with 2nd editions (EIGHT years after their original release), they were considerate enough to release affordable Update Packs for loyal customers. Hell, even King of Tokyo/King of New York/King of Monster Island was handled in a way that considered their loyal fans. That feels good. This doesn't.

    Of the new heroes, Princess Irulan seems to be the most busted to play. Basically let’s you trash a card from your hand unconditionally when you play the signet ring and get spice for doing it.
    So with her you can run a very tight deck but for her to be good you need strong cards. If the imperium row doesn’t give you good cards she might struggle. Her passive is also quite nice if you are able to get cards that let you juggle influence on the factions.

    We found that the worms made the game a bit uninteresting. For us the original Dune: Imperium had one thing that was really great: A very tight game where every point really mattered and there were several ways to win - especially when you added the expansions. In the new version you can get so many points for a single combat that worms and combat skew everything into a single playstyle (if you want to win). That impacts the value of cards in the offering as now only combat truly matters, while in original Dune: Imperium you would see players going for different cards, combos, and setups.
    The spies initially sounds like a good idea but it's not as interesting as the Infiltration mechanic from Rise of Ix because you can clearly SEE the spies (which just seems dumb). It's a bit of a weird design.
    We plan on adding the new leaders without specific Uprising abilities though. We like leaders.

  • @user-jp3fh5yh6g

    I will just implement into Dune Imperium the 2+ visits to High Council. 5 solari -> council seat (1st usage) and 2 spice + 1 intrigue + 3 troops (afterwards)

    I am wondering though if it is a good idea to play with both expansions Uprising in 6-players mode? Uprising has not convinced me at all with the Worms and the Wall and the Conflict Symbols to collect. To me it adds too much unpredictability and therefore randomness, so I'd rather play Dune Imperium if not for the 6-Players mode.

But they're apparently noticeable enough that in the other DT discussion of the two, Roy said he wouldn't be playing the original any more because he likes the new one better. Putting aside that this is a whole new game for some minor changes, I don't think that they are improving the game. It more looks like throwing more random stuff (I was not a fan of the intrigues of the base also as they can swing the entire game). The CHOAM boards will benefit the earlier players in the play order, the bonus point for conflict matching a random card, worms that can give you 4 points in one round (4 out of 10 is huge)... I'm not fond of the spies as well as they make blocking a space less valuable. Based on this review I'll stick to the base + ix + immo.

      The expansions are compatible, lol they have done everything possible to improve significantly the game and not make you lose the value acquired... You can also still use the upgraded components, they are all the same...

      Pieced out how exactly? Uprising has: a new double sided board, new imperium deck/conflict cards/intrigue cards, new pieces for worms/spies/maker hooks/shield wall, 6 player mode, new House Hagal deck/Rivals, 9 new leaders, CHOAM contract tiles (as well as CHOAM tiles for IX). So that leaves: agent/troop/control marker/alliance tokens and starting player cards as repeats from the original DI. You think leaving out those bits would have made this much cheaper? Personally, I think it's a pretty good deal.

    In trying to imitate Rhado and his style, you've lost your originality and thoughts... All I heard was 13 min of waffle unfortunately. This has been my complaint with Shea, just be yourself and less like someone else...'cos in trying to focus on style, you lost out on substance...
