- Solo Camping in the Tarptent Scarp 1 on the Spooky Moors in Strong Winds
I head out to the spooky and atmospheric moors near Pendle Hill using the Tarptent Scarp 1. The winds were strong all day, gusting over 40mph with no let up at all! Such was the strength of the wind that I pitched slightly lower down than my intended location, using a stone wall for some shelter. I cook up a nice meal from scratch, using a fantastic frying pan from Fire Maple. I also try out some new beers for something a bit different! As the day drew to a close, I was treated to a spectacular sunset, with the last of the light illuminating some stunning lenticular clouds which hung on in the late spring skies.
A fantastic adventure, the tent performed very well and this was without the crossover poles.

Hi Chris. Thanks for this lovely video. I have to say, the windy, rainy, stormy ones are great because its an adventure and you always make it look cozy! I can't get up the mountains as I'd a bad crash 2 years ago, and had 16 surgeries since, quite disabled now, trying to get back to life/ work. Great video again. I really enjoy your camps on The West Pennine Moors and Pendle. Both my neck of the woods and shows you don't need to travel to the lakes and yomp up a mountain to enjoy great countryside, great views and great sunsets. The sunsets over the Ribble Estuary from the moors above White Coppice are as good as anywhere. Fair play with the honesty about the first two beers. They both sounded bloody awful even before you tried them 😂 The meal looked bang on, I'm going to try that one, and the Chocalate stout looks a great choice. Top video Chris. Great watching on the Telly.👍 I havent found a way yet to view comments on the telly via the Firestick You Tube app, so have to fire up the laptop.

Interesting beer choices. I like a drink at camp, but can't carry the kind of weight I used to, hence you can imagine how delighted I was to learn of an ultralight backpacking product which solved the difficulty. Basically, what they do is to take the beer and use an ingenious process to extract most of the water from it (but not the alcohol!), so what you're carrying is a concentrated and largely dehydrated form of the original product, weighing only about 10% of what they started with. It is perfectly pleasant to consume it as it is, or water from your camp source can be added to your preferred dilution level. Somebody told me that Scottish people have been doing this for centuries, but that's probably just an urban myth.
And a top tip: If you steer clear of beverages which describe themselves as a hybrid of ale and a girl's blouse, you should avoid the necessity of ditching them after you've lugged them all the way up the hill. Just sayin'...

Nice one Chris, I’ve been converted the Tarp 1 with cross over poles all the time, but more importantly take some Northern Monk, I have not been disappointed by any of them. You did well not to spit fizzy p!!! Out. 🤮

Hi Chris, I'm local to Pendle and have camped there loads. Last time though I parked in the layby just down from the Wellsprings and came back to my side window smashed with a rock. Nothing taken. Idk if a farmer or some scum just passing by so take care. Great vid again, atb Sean

Fuel is a mare at the moment but for me, this is my retirement hobby so, no matter how much it goes up by I will still be out but awful for a family living on a tight budget. Heard of 'Most Haunted' but never seen it myself and a right 'cordon blue' cooking for tea mind, although the Double Dirigible did not seem to go down well 😂. Despite the awful wind you still had the views and then setting sun was amazing, loved the colours in the skies. Good that you got packed away before the forecasted rain and we seem to be having a heck of a lot of real windy days this year, cheers Alan

That scran looked great. Earlier in year thought I’d save the bag from a camp meal and wash it out n re-use it, then on the night before getting out there I fill it with some Idahoan mash mix, some herbs, bit of beef jerky, some Parmesan etc, dried onion and salami - just stuff laying around the kitchen cupboards - came out pukka. Took some hot sauce. Best camp meal I’ve had by far. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Nice video, think sometimes we get lost in the dizzy heights of the solo summiteer and Bushman to name but a few, although they also make great vids it just goes to show you don’t have to be up in the clouds on the edge of a mountain to gave a great nights camping. Being a Lancashire lad i know roughly where you were and its a fantastic place to go to seek solitude for a few hours with a couple beers and a spicy sausage 🙄. @@MCMOutdoors It’s a doddle of a job especially if you can pitch it in the house somewhere. I use them carpet Velcro patches to get it pitched tightly. 👍

Nice pitch. Tent did well in the wind, especially given you weren't even using the cross poles. Good to go locally when you can to save on fuel and your carbon footprint.
Cheers Kev - I find the tent is pretty robust without the cross poles. This is the newer model which sadly has the 'abrasion issue' when the cross poles go through the centre loop - Tarptent responded to say the loops were made shorter than they intended - hence the poles rub on the fabric of the pole sleeve. Anyway, it's patched and I have the toggle loop for when the weather really closes in - thanks for watching and ATB, Chris

Beer : I tried some of the beers you have been sampling, but they are just not for me. They smell nice, but the taste . . . . I do like the Punk IPA, but without any fruit in it. Glad you get some enjoyment out of the odd flavoured beers, each to their own 😀
