Thank you Tim Cook.
+Kathy Yoo actually protecting our privacy
Kathy Yoo 4th amendment
The Gov just needs an excuse to get into peoples phones. I support Apple 100%. Do not sacrifice freedom for security.
Tim cooked him real good.
Surrending personal security for collective security is an Orwellian proposition. Im with Apple on this! It feels surreal a corporation is protecting the rights of freedom of its customers.
Tim has cemented my mind to Apple. Any phone can be as BEST or SHITTY as whatever, But if my Privacy is SECURE, and even the Government can't get in... Then that Device is THE BEST.
Well Done Apple
Yh. Only Apple can hack it. And the iPhone 6 will be COMPLETELY in hackable. They are using a new software team so not even Apple can hack it. That's what I call dedication. And that's also why macs and iOS is the best. Android and Windows can swallow my big dick
+MK-1 Trust me, the government can get into Apple's phones, no problem.
+Johnny English then why all the media rage and court stuff between them? i smell some tinfoil
probE466 Watch a film called Unthinkable and you'll see how easy would be to gain access to Tim's data. If he can beat Khalid Sheikh Mohammed's Ice Bucket Challenge, then I'll believe that he's good at data security.
Johnny English you, the government gets nowhere without us. You fucked up and we won't write software that allows everyone to see and collect data of others. We value privacy very highly and you don't. That's the difference. That's why the people don't like you.
Anyone else pee on the side of the toilet at night so you don't make any noise?
+Nick's Strength and Power omg I thought I was the only one
This is so random... but I do it.
Always
Never thought I’d see nick on here
Nah obviously I pee in the sink like a real man
I stand firmly with Apple on this one... 🇺🇸
Tim Cook, Apple CEO, American patriot.
+clunkmess Amen!
+Decaying Cantaloupe Everything is made in China nowadays; it's due to lower manufacturing costs. Almost every company does that. Terrorist supporter? Please explain..
+Decaying Cantaloupe Whatever device you used to write this comment, it's most probably made in China or Taiwan.
What would Steve jobs have said
+owen wu he will be proud of put tim on his position!
+owen wu "Let Bill give it a try"
+owen wu "Who wants a stylus, YUCK"
We're calling it iFuck -Steve Jobs
ThAtSIt415 lol, that was for the iPhone, not the iPad just so you know.
I believe he is doing the right thing.
Same. Most people do as well
Cook is totally correct and the interview literally just can't understand his argument.
All hail Apple and Tim Cook!
Tim Cook 2016!
My man, Tim Cook nailed it.
Good job Mr.Cook. You are a great leader of Apple. Keep fighting the good fight for the privacy of the people.
Way to go Tim! As a famous person who helped to right the Constitution said "Those who are willing sacrifice their rights for a little security will soon have, or deserve, either."
words of wisdom from Ben
Yeah and the actual quote was "liberty instead of "security". I was a little off.
Tim Cook is smart
+Kathy Yoo A CEO of a multi-billion pound/dollar tech company, arguable the largest tech company for over decade, is 'dumb'? Fucking hell, you're a bright one. He probably makes mroe money than you 10 times over. He isn't dumb, he just prefers not to have his customers rights taken away in the name of freedom.
Kathy Yoo This has nothing to do with country you tool. The United States has the worlds most powerful armed forces which you spend over $600 billion per annum on. You think data, that the FBI most likely already have, is a major threat to the US?
Hahaha, yeah right. This is about the United States Government having the ability to check in on anyone who uses an Iphone, as well as potentially leaving a massive door way for hackers to reap all over bank and PayPal accounts. What the fuck is a country without the people who populate it?
If you're so ready to lie down and be a bitch in the name of 'freedom' which is being taken away from you by this, then no wonder you think he's an idiot.
You're a typical example of someone who has no idea what they're talking about, in this case technology and law, and formulating a hardocre pro-nation opinion.
The FBI had the information, they told a Police Dept to cause the phone to lock itself. Now they want backdoor acess to the Operating System of the Iphone to get it, do you know what that means? No, you don't.
Shut the fuck up Katy ya slag, I'm all for being patriotic and shit but now isn't the time to be a turd.
Kathy Yoo Someone can't read, fucking moron. I didn't say the US government wanted my bank account, or anyones, I was saying that hackers would use the backdoor on the iOS to get bank details of millions of people.
Understand now? I have a feeling you don't have a very good job based on your shit English skills, so I'm pretty sure everyone earns more than you hahahaha XD
+Kathy Yoo -- Of course they can get your bank account. But there may be other data stored on one's phone they cannot get. But Cook's point is that once this backdoor technology is created, it won't only be government that uses it, but also identity thieves, to whom your bank account number is not so readily available.
+Kathy Yoo Haha 200k Yens perhaps. You sound very dumb and ignorant of what this debate is all about.
I believe in Tim Cook
Cook is a stand up guy; he realizes that even good governments tend to devolve into police states; big brother will take over if good men do nothing.
where can i see the complete video?
"Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." - Benjamin Franklin This extends equally to our second amendment, I wish all liberals would think this way....
Well, I think Apple has the right to defend themselves. They should NOT open this back door to the iPhone's encryption.
+Kent Sextro You should probably look into the origin of that quote, because you're not understanding what Franklin actually said and have entirely mischaracterized his own position and intent by doing so. You're far from the only one who makes that mistake. Every Libertarian under the sun makes that same mistake.
babybirdhome One can argue whether the statement is or isn't out of context; if it was said very literally directed towards a specific event, does that mean it does not hold true to any other aspects?? The founding fathers had specified the role of our federal government, and the role of our states, check Article I Section 8. There's no arguing the overreach of our federal government.
"Privacy is important, and it is a key value of our company.... our view is that you can have both security and privacy; I don't want to read your e-mail or texts." Tim is awesome, and this is precisely why I switched over to Apple. I'm not obsessive-compulsive, but I can't stand any company digging into my family's personal information. The assumptions that 'I have nothing to hide' and 'I'm not that important' are not sufficient enough for me to stomach the conclusion that a certain company will pry into my life if I use their (free) services. So avoid them, right? Precisely. Now that is about using great services, which I don't believe should require the companies that offer them to take something with their other hands; believe me, they can afford to offer free services without selling aggregate data. What of security and the rise of a Fichtean state? And this is where Tim nailed it philosophically and practically: "I don't think you have to pick between either security or privacy." Cheers, Tim.
Tim Cook is right , smart and has a deep insight in how to deal with software.
TIM COOK FOR PRESIDENT! F*** the government. #Respect #Apple #NewWorld
i agree with you
thankyou
I was always fond of Apple products. Not just for their quality and the design and efficiency. Also for their customer centricity. I am working as a security consultant and I always wanted to see privacy equally handled like security and usability. So I was not surprised on that statement. What surprises me more is that Tim was able to withstand the arguments of Gerard Baker. This interview is now more than 4 years old. The latest statement from Tim last week aimed at social networks that drains customers of their data and make them a product shows how significant this topic was and still is. I hope that more companies will learn how important it is to keep freedom of your own data within your own boundaries.
I agree with Tim Cook's view. The interviewer had too many assumptions of a totalitarian society.
Where can I find the full interview? It's not on wsj.com
This is why I buy from Apple, thank you for standing up for what’s right
"no I don't agree, I don't agree..." love that bit from Tim Cook. And the host has a simple and old-school brain
Well said Tim!
What Tim is saying, is that privacy is something that should not be compromised for the sake of security. Because it is just as important if anything, a factor for security. The government should be smart enough to prevent a terrorist without subject to mere exploitation of data
I really appreciate the stand Tim has made against assholes who want to compromise our security for perceived "safety". Thanks Tim! Keep it up!
Should Apple allow backdoor access into its phones, the Apple stock would tank massively and customers would leave the brand in droves.
Thanks Tim Cook for understanding that saying no is the best route
- Tim never budge an inch. Ever! We are all with you.
When you piss off Tim Cook 😂
Mr. Cook is brilliant, and my family and I (a 10-year Apple customer) support him 100%. He needs to say NO to the FBI.
like hardware wise
And the current s8 with iris scanner facial recognition go straight to google nice.
Thank you Tim
there were only 73,452 flashes from the photographers. I wanted more. It was so relaxing to my eyes.
As much hate that I have for Apple, I support them in this 100%. And there's a much easier solution:
On a case-by-case basis when something like this happens, send the phone to Apple to have them remove the brute-force security protection that erases the phone data after X amount of failed attempts, extract the needed data, reapply the security, and send the phone back. The password/pin/pattern or whatever the perpetrator used would not be that hard to brute-force with a supercomputer, but the AES-256 encrypted data itself would be impossible. If it starts happening a lot and using their resources, let them write it off on taxes or something. Every tech company, whether they want to admit it or not, has proprietary utilities to do things like this. And even if they don't, they should be able to reverse engineer it since they have all the source code. It's the most fair compromise, Apple shouldn't have to allow a HUGE security hole in their proprietary software, compromising the privacy of millions of users. There's no reason why they should have to do this for EVERY phone! And if the FBI doesn't want to send them something that's "evidence," then I guess they can just suck a fat one.
It’s kind of incredible that a trillion dollar company is sticking up for our privacy and not giving in to peer pressure. They’re standing up for what they believe in.
I wonder if this will be in Mr. Robot season 2
just by saying that you want access to that much you automatically say you want to know where to look for the important stuff first.. WHICH MEANS YOU CANT HAVE A WARRANT
this is really good for Apple. Bravo to Tim Cook whether he truly believes in encryption or not
I agree with Tim.
I just love Tim.
whats with the red socks?
Yess
It’s crazy good how he held his own and articulated his point.. Stands true till today and I’m sure for decades to come. Great job Tim 🍎
"Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain security, will deserve neither and lose both." -Benjamin Franklin
Watching this video on my iPhone 4S in 2020 😂
those socks...
get em tim!!! stay strong
I agree with him when he said you don't have to choose between either Security and privacy. It's stupid to choose between them, you need both otherwise it's pointless
he's powerful...
the public agree with you tim cook we are on your side privacy is a must !
I don't get it. Just unlock the phone inhouse and give it back. / Also, if the phone is wiped after too many attempts, what's the point in trying to unlock it?
I recently concluded my Apple Fanboy phase after realising the reality of the world and the tech industry, and what ive learnt over the past 2 years of using Apple products is this:
- we can compare OS vs OS all day
- we can talk about convenient features all day
- we can judge others for what brand they use
But regardless of who you are or what phone you use, Privacy is a human right and thats why I’m sticking with Apple…. I hope the rest of the market follows.
could've simplified it as, if u sacrifice liberty for security, you lose both.
completely agree with tim here
Thank You Tim Cook for protecting our Constitutional rights against the FBI bullies
Your welcome, dear friends 🙏🏼!
Nice explanation by Tim, I believe that Apple is doing right...
I'm very happy with they way that Tim Cook has been handling these interviews especially in the face of non tech-savvy interviewers that want to just paint encryption as evil.
Seriously, is that the quality of WSJ's Editor-in-Chief? Justifying an argument by referencing the old defunct Communist Soviet Union? Tim Cook is being too nice in this interview. Steve Jobs would have effed the bugger upside down.
Tim Cook is on point!
4:37 Tim is best
I'm wondering what would Steve would of said
*would have
great man
Good for Apple.
"could've known" we do know that information cannot be processed at this rate and problems are solved elsewhere
I know this is late but I agree with him completely
What is privacy? It's the freedom to be yourself. It's the highest level of freedom, higher than freedom of speech and expression.
Get them Tim
stand tall tim!
Say what you want about Cook, but he owned this interview. Solid point, makes me want to buy an iphone lol.
My criminal credit Car Proceless
You tell him TIM, that guy was on another planet, and you are well correct
Tim Cook and Clark Howard sound a like.
Tim Cook has my vote from now.
Respect for Tim Cook +9000 :D
I truly agree with Tim Cook
Policy is the unbreakable security
Tim Cook, you are my hero!
Tim Cook is my Idol and I think he is doing the right thing
nice
The entire Apple Company was popular for its, "rebel against the man," attitude from the start. Lets not forget that Steve Jobs himself was the child of a prominent Syrian couple. Maybe the real effect of those roots are just coming to light.
I am still on the fence about apple and don't know if I like them or not, but I definitely gained a lot of respect for Tim Cook after watching this.
Well unc0ver found the backdoor lol
Don't give in...
Tim Cook sounding like Rand Paul and I love it!
We should not give up our rights to feel "safe".
I have never like apple products particularly, but this makes me want to support them.
Good job, Tim Cook and Apple
I agree with Tim Cook 100%. GO APPLE!!!👍
I agree with you Tim Cook
Hackers left ur phone angry
cool Tim ....
